I have an internal GPS - I have only gotten lost one time in my life - and that's because I was trying to follow mapquest directions, and the roadways in NJ weren't properly identified!

ORIGINAL: trainfan Why do women have a dozen or more colors of nail polish (or insert any other type of cosmetic)? So, Why does a woman need so many shoes? All right, I'll take a page from Jazzlvrs book. Here we go: The number of different types of cosmetics, nail polish, and shoes are analagous to the tools discussion. Let's start with the shoes. A woman can get away with four pairs of shoes. Think of it as being the 4-screwdriver toolset that you can pick up at Walmart (I have one of those - love it - it is in a cute little blue bag). Your shoes could be a plain black pump, a nice comfortable neutral colored sandal, brown flat shoe, and a pair of tennis shoes. Actually, depending on what she's doing, she might be able to get away with less. However, let's say you are attending a formal event, perhaps wearing a beautiful blue beaded gown. While you could maybe get away with a plain pair of black pumps, it would most likely not be the best choice - you might want a pair of died blue satin pumps that would match your dress. Or, what if you are going hiking with your boyfriend? While a rugged tennis shoe might work if it isn't too steep, a nice-fitting pair of Timberlands might fit the bill. And what if you are wearing a nice white linen pantsuit with a pink shirt underneath? Well, it would look so much better with pink or brown sandals (or if you can work purple or lavender in there it could look so cute). You could go with flat shoe though, but the sandal (especially a nice little wedge) might be the best for that outfit. Likewise, you could have one purse that you wear everywhere (your "standard adjustable wrench"), but to have a nice summer straw bag with the linen outfit would be better. The same goes for makeup. Many women opt for bolder colors if they are going out for a night on the town and lighter, more neutral colors for a daytime professional look. Or no makeup. Or my favorite - a bit of foundation, a little eyeliner/mascara, little powder and neutral lipstick and I'm ready to go. I still look like myself and just change my lipstick for night (and might add a bit more eyeliner and do my nails). An added layer of complexity are seasonal changes. You also have to take into account that your skin color and maybe even type changes. I get several shades darker in the summer and my skin gets a bit oilier. So, my foundation (a base makeup on which other makeup is applied) changes a bit and I wear a bit lighter moisturizer. In the winter though, I need all of the moisturizer I can get. Ditto for nail polish. Red might be nice for certain looks, a much more neutral color might be nice for the office. Some like wilder colors (blue, black, green) if they want a funkier look. It is all a matter of personal style. By the way, I should add a disclaimer. While I like talking about cosmetics, clothes, and shoes - and can recognize and put together outfits etc., I am not really a girly girl. I've had to pare my closet down to the bare minimum (I do have more than 4 shoes though) because my life has changed significantly in the past year and requires me to be much more simple. I have a much more natural look, but I like to add a little pizazz. But I do understand the concept of the right "tool" for the "job." Ok, I'm done. Jazzlvr, ladies - do I pass? With flying colors rgod. LOL

I still don't understand. I have had four screwdrivers for the longest time, and I make do. If they don't work, maybe the butter knife will. Oh, and on that subject, I only have one hammer, if you don't include the shoes. I do get creative to get the job done. For those minor/small jobs around the house, a small tool kit consisting of an adjustable wrench, a pair of pliers, a claw hammer and and a couple different sizes of standard and philips head screwdrivers or one of those screwdrivers with the multiple bits hidden in the handle will do the job. But for those men and women who do the major repair jobs around the house and on the family vehicles more variety and specialized tools are required to do the job properly. And as another fella posted earlier in this thread it just makes the job go quicker, easier and more effecient when you have the right tool for the job

I am spoiled - my dad has a very full tool-kit... nothing but the quality screwdrivers for me. I've gone through a lot of low-quality ones... no thanks! Now, I don't scrimp on other materials. I only use the best when it comes to my furniture projects. Speaking of which... I have a question for the guys, but I'll have to go to the "Hey Honey" thread. For now... Why do men worry about going bald/thinning when it seems many women either don't mind or believe baldness is sexy?

In short, Ecclesiastes 1:1,2 KJV 1 The words of the Preacher, the son of David, king in Jersalem. 2 Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher, vanity of vanities; all is vanity.

In the past, baldness was equated with age. If you were bald you were looked upon as being old, or aged beyond your years. Which meant diminished capacity or weakness. In a culture, like ours, which values youth more than ability or intelligence, that could be a very frightening thing. Even though, in todays value system, when baldness is losing that stigmatism, many men still embrace that older value system.

For most of us "baldness" wasn't sexy during our formative years. 2. Balding is a sign of aging and obviously I couldn't be getting older! 3. Sun burn on teh top of the head. Can you say "OUCH" I knew you could.

It never bothered me...I shave my head nearly every summer. Reduces sweating and saves money on haricuts.

But, it seems that our culture is moving away from this way of looking at things. Yes, youth is valued, probably way more than it should be, but I also look up to the older guys as the ones who have wisdom and knowledge. So I much prefer a guy who has a natural head of hair... or has the confidence to go bald.

(Honestly I can't speak for most men on this issue. I never get lost. (I have an excellent sense of direction and spacial relationships) I do get turned around sometimes and then I will stop, ask, and get reoriented.) I am one who will have a map with me if I am in unfamiliar locations. I am like John I may get turned around, but if I am awake during the trip I am seldom if ever lost. Ditto what Gary said about the map and Tritto what he said about seldom getting lost.

Guys, what's a good guy's gift to give the boss for things like his birthday, boss' day, and Christmas? We're friends, as well as living in the same neighborhood.

I'd like to know what some generic guy gifts are. Generic women gifts: candles, stationery, lotions, etc. Although the guy in question is someone specific, there are times when I'd like an "any guy would like this" gift. What are those things?
