violinist_for_jesus -> I'm looking for a laptop (5/6/2008 11:24:44 PM)

Hello,
I am looking for a decent laptop, I don't want to spend more then $500 bucks on it, so can some of you help me out? I really do not know much about computers, lol...I am not really a gamer, nor do I have much time for that even if I was...so all I need for a laptop is one to do school work with(esp. online courses) and to run some stuff for various undertakings of which I hope to start.
Oh, and one that works well with music and music downloads would be great too, but not a requirement.
Any suggestions?
Thanks!

If you absolutely have to stay under 500, this will do: an entry-level Dell. If you can afford it, I'd recommend their $25 upgrade from 1 gig of RAM to 2 gigs--its a bargain. One thing--it is running XP Home. Now I don't have a problem with that--I actually downgraded from Vista to XP, and would love to sell my Vista disk if I could--but some would prefer Vista. XP will be getting security updates until 2014 so don't worry about worms/viruses/exploits. If I were in your shoes that's what I'd get. A dual-core CPU, a gig of RAM, a DVD burner, decent graphics card and wireless card. 80 gig hard drive.

If you would care to shop Dell, do yourself a favor and go through their small business site. THey give better prices than Home, and you don't actually have to own our own business to do it.

Best site for laptop information:
http://www.notebookreview.com/
See their green "laptop deals" link near the top right.

"Decent laptop" and "under $500" is almost a contradiction, but if you can put up with something cheaply built and has lower-class specs, you can scrape by with something usable for that. You might check Office Depot/Best Buy, as they sometimes have deals in that range.

You might look into an ASUS EEE PC. The 7" version is under $400. The new 9" is I think $550.

I think the overall *best* place to buy laptops is:
http://powernotebooks.com
They are a Christian-owned company and provide good products and solid State-side support. Definitely not the cheapest though, and I don't think they have anything under $500.

All I'm going to say is: Don't get Vista.

The Asus EEE is a linux box with no hard drive. If V4J has to have certain commercial software, that will not work.

Btw, tigerdirect has that 7" box for usually for $399.

There are any number of 2nd hand laptop websites that have significant savings over new. Just figure on having to buy a new battery right away.

Any basic new laptop is good enough to surf the net and play mp3s. 500 but might be pushing it but 600-700 will get you something good.

The laptop from dell in the above post will be good enough for most users. You can still get some laptops with XP just have to look around.

Indeed it would be. I've had a laptop with much the same specs for about a year now--same graphics card, a gig of RAM, a slightly slower cpu (AMD dual-core), and with XP all has been well--at least, with the graphics card driver from Dell (the later ATI drivers gave me fits).

V4J: You live anywhere near a MicroCenter store? I just got a hp/Compaq refurb for $470.

1.5 ghz dual core, 1 meg ram, 80 gig hd, built-in wireless and lan connector, flash media reader, Vista home.

They have several models down to $399 but you gotta pick them up at their stores.

I've had good luck with the HP laptops. I have a HP Compac 9010NX. It's going on 4 or 5 years old now. Aside from using it for work in my tool kit and beating it to smitherines, it has held up very well with very few problems.

My two kids also have newer HP laptops. One has XP on it, ( He bought it slightly used), and the other is the HP Pavillion with Windows Vista on it. They both have no complaints with either one except for Windows Vista.

If money is tight consider buying a used one.

Is that a joke????

128MB???
"HUGE" 20GB hard drive!

JonCo54 -> RE: I'm looking for a laptop (5/14/2008 3:35:26 PM)

No. It seems to be a computer laptop. I f you didn't like the first one you saw. They have others. For the amount of money you are spending you can't expect a whole lot.
