Bettawrekonize -> If you thought animal rights activists were bad, soon plants may have rights (5/8/2008 3:43:11 AM)

quote:

You just knew it was coming: At the request of the Swiss government, an ethics panel has weighed in on the "dignity" of plants and opined that the arbitrary killing of flora is morally wrong. This is no hoax. The concept of what could be called "plant rights" is being seriously debated.

The Silent Scream of the Asparagus

Uncommondescent Plant Rights

I am not saying animal rights activists are good or bad, but what about plants? Are we going to have plant right activists soon? Are we going to have the computer rights movement too? If and when computers learn to pass the Turing test, will they demand rights as well? Where do we draw the line? Bacteria? What about if a virus infects you, does it have rights too? Should they stick you on immunosuppressants so your immune system can't hurt the virus[sm=hammerhead.gif]?

I read that the other day. I just wonder what those poor souls eat? [sm=icon_smile_boggled.gif]

Looks like that thin air up there is starting some brain damage.[sm=rollingeyes.gif]

Does this mean I am practicing ethnic cleansing every time I weed my garden? [&o] Will they drag me before the International Criminal Court for this serious crime? [:o]

I draw and quarter apples before I eat them.

When I eat asparagus I eat the tops first.

Oh, and I love BABY carrots.

Pretty soon they're going to outlaw disinfectants because the bacteria have rights. Lets also outlaw microwaves, fire, and anything else that might kill bacteria while we're at it. Or they may say that we may not use things that kill bacteria for no reason because bacteria serve an environmental purpose (coming from a government that believes in unguided evolution by method of purposeless processes).

Then again, maybe I should not say anything, I might give them ideas.

There's a scene in Notting Hill (Julia Roberts, Hugh Grant) where Hugh's character is on a date with a fruitarian:

Keziah: No thanks, I'm a fruitarian.
Max: I didn't realize that.
William: And, ahm: what exactly is a fruitarian?
Keziah: We believe that fruits and vegetables have feeling so we think cooking is cruel. We only eat things that have actually fallen off a tree or bush - that are, in fact, dead already.
William: Right. Right. Interesting stuff. So, these carrots...
Keziah: Have been murdered, yes.
William: Murdered? Poor carrots. How beastly!

In all seriousness, if it wasn't for archea still being around (ancient single-celled organisms most people would call bacteria), the planet would be uninhabitable. It's not the plants that produce oxygen and moderate gases in the air on this planet; it's the single-celled organisms.

So if someone ever comes up with a plan to eliminate all bacteria from the planet, it would be in our best interests to let Greenpeace win in this rare case where they'd be right.

I knew there was a reason why I don't like asparagus, brussells sprouts, spinach, and other such stuff. Now I have the perfect (?) excuse for not eating them. [:)]

maybe GE-crops? Everybody knows they don't have a soul, after all...

It's the way of the world: "they cry, 'save the trees and kill the children!'"-- Casting Crowns

Or an oldie:

We've got a program for saving the earth
While unborn children are denied their right to birth
One baby's blessed, another cursed -
Have we made this world better or worse
Now that the life of a tree comes first?

(The song is, I think, "Living Life Upside Down" by Truth / Russ Lee. LINK)
