I am not for book burning, and people can play games if they are at peace with it. It is not of faith for me, so it is sin for me. I know people live like this, criminals but does it make it right?

Of course it doesn't make their criminal lifestyle right. That's not really the point. I don't play the games myself, not for any faith reasons...they bore me to tears, most games do in general. But I don't think it's glorifying or justifying the lifestyles of criminals. To me, it seems like it's only presenting a first person view of the life of a criminal.

As people have mentioned before, it's like reading a book or watching a movie/television. I think they offer insight into others' minds that I couldn't get unless I lived the lifestyle myself.

Ask the Apostle Paul, he spoke quite a bit on that. It also goes back to what I shared earlier about work experiences, etc.. there are many things that do not bother me that would literally make some Christians faint.

I have a weak stomach for such things which does impact my entertainment options. ; ) It is a truth though that we can't totally hide from such things. You reminded me though of one of my 10 favourite all time memory verses:

I agree with the original poster....burn the games and all games like it. For any person who confesses Christ and plays these types of video games I suggest putting down the game and picking up the BIBLE instead. Read the WORD. For as the day approaches, surely believers are being deceived and blinded by "toys" that peep and shoot and whiz...it all started innocently but is growing to be the most pornographic, perverse, violent, mindless, pointless, non-glorifying, non-praising, evil, and not to mention worldly...oh lets see here it is in 2 Timothy "This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come.For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good,Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God;Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away." While we think that these "games" are just "entertainment", they are not. I look within my soul and know without a doubt that my LORD whom gave His life for this world, for me, Who was beat and scarred like no man before, Who became sin, Who was nailed to the tree and hated without a cause...would definitely NOT be pleased if I sat at a tv and played games that degrade women, women(in real life) who are caught up in a life that is filled with death, disease and violence; games that display bloody killing which depict real life...so much violence in the world, why would I want to play a likeness of it in a fantasy?!!; games that mock authority [pray for..."For kings, and [for] all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty." 1Tim] and we wonder how kids kill without remorse, with such apathy and haters of peace officers; games that draw us in subtley, quietly...just like the snake in the garden...even though these games are rated "M", kids will find a way to get them, of a truth...studies show that the ages for these games are 12-17 yrs old. But we, adults, we Christians can show them "the Way, the Truth and Life....just by being, acting and doing those things that please God according to His Word...period.

There is a book coming out by a guy who conducted a study at Harvard. The study pretty much said that the only children affected in an aggressive manner by these games were already aggressive due to other circumstances...such as being bullied. This entire discussion is so 90's...let's go back to 1995 and begin complaining about how Mortal Kombat is so violent with its blood. Only modern Christians would use the same arguments about a subject for decades, even when they're proven wrong. That's right, I'm stereotyping.

Do you think it is ok in gods eyes to simulate immoral acts? Ask yourself that, if you say yes I think your being very dishonest with yourself. That is all I have to say.

It's as sinful as watching an episode of Law & Order. Or as sinful as playing cops & robbers. Or as sinful as having lunch with some of the most vulgar and anti-Christian people in this city.

My observation stands... because it is fiction, it's a matter of personal conviction and steps into the realms of legalism.

I am reminded of an old (but true story) from some time ago.

D.L. Moody went to England to visit Charles Spurgeon. When Moody arrived at Spurgeon's house, he was literally shocked and taken aback by the sight of Charles coming into the room with a very large cigar. Puffing away and enjoying it to the max.

Moody said, "brother! how can you have that in your mouth?! You smoke?!"

Charles Spurgeon looked at him and laughed a little.. took the cigar out of his mouth and said, "Brother... how can you have such a pudgy belly and round face?"

I find it not funny...but distressing that believers would even want to play a game filled with such unrighteousness and then try to justify the watching of it.

BTW--I can write this in all sincerety and truth because I do not watch violent tv shows, movies, listen to unGodly songs nor do I allow my 14 yr old son to do so, or play violent, moronic, video games. Contrary to what some may believe, I am an active person who enjoys activities. There are other choices...for it is those choices that we make which will determine how we will stand before the Judgment Seat of Christ. It is written that we will be judged on the works that we do, is not watching/playing/involvement, a part of works? Touch no unclean thing says the LORD. I say yes, for Jesus has said, the eye is the light of the body"The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light.But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great [is] that darkness!" Matthew 6

Again I say there are alternatives, we can have fun but let us do so with wisdom keeping ourselves pure, our minds, our hearts and our spirit, this pleases the Lord. So I play the WII game. My son and I play tennis, bowling, baseball, golf. There is no violence, there is no blood, there are no prostitutes, no images that depict the evil that is in the world. We DO have choices. We don't have to be like the world but are to save the world by giving them Jesus Christ. If you(Christian man/woman) are not focused on saving souls....then why were you saved? It is written "we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God is pleading to you through us", 2 Cor 5.

Keep yourselves, dear children from ALL idols and be pure as Christ is pure, this do, knowing that the Day is at hand. Let us not be caught without our oil or like the parable of those who were not diligently waiting for their Lord but be ever watching for the Shepherd to return for His sheep so that we be found, spotless, without blemish, this we pray in Jesus precious, holy and powerful name, amen!

It seems clear that if its shameful to even mention such things, where do we get the idea that it's ok to emulate these things in music, film, or video games just for entertainment's sake. Christians are supposed to expose these things to the light for the purpose of confronting them, not simply for a voyeuristic thrill.

True that there are plenty of other things to do besides play video games. I for one, don't like the premise behind Grand Theft Auto of any number. Not my idea of fun entertainment. But then again, I don't care for playing plastic guitars in a video game because I find the graphics of the musicians annoying and offensive. BUT it is still personal responsiblity with God.

BTW, I went bowling with friends one night and didn't enjoy it at all because of the music videos they had playing over head. I did not raise a ruckous. I did not blast them for making poor choices and exposing folks to the trash they had playing. I also did not go back to that bowling alley.

To everything there is a season. There is balance. Only a few are called to live like monks. I can't find the balance in GTA but then again, others cannot balance some of the activities I take part in.

Exactly - and many here would say you are as sinful as me because you play World of Warcraft.

Which, BTW, so do my wife and I. Been playing since launch (November 2004) and have two level 70's characters, plus a boat load of mid level alts..) [:D]

yeah, I think you've popped onto the wow thread here once or twice. M'love and I are working on my 2nd 70 and his 3rd.

I just don't see the appeal of GTA.... I understand that without a "bad guy" or a crisis there is no storyline. It can be fun to play the Bad Guy in a play. But to play as a criminal for any length of time, well, I don't know why that would be something anyone would want to do. I just really don't get it. But then again, I don't get some anime that is just filled with angsty whinney teen "heros". I don't understand why kids want to emulate rap stars who do nothing but brag about breaking the law. Why anyone would spend great amount of time on the "dark side" for fun...........[:'(]

I can see how you haven't played any of the GTA's, especially not 3 or 4.

You're a criminal, yes. But you end up going against criminal element, seeing how the lifestyle is not right and then taking them down. You can even do "good deeds" throughout the game, if you choose to do so.
