Are they trying to get into the Guinness book of World Records? I wonder what their older children think. Or even the doctors and nurses, since they're a regular at the hospital. If they can support them and love them all, then more power to them. I just don't understand it. But I will say this though... the parents must have unlimited amounts of patience.

Are they trying to get into the Guinness book of World Records? no they are not...they are just of a mindset about children that most people are not of or do not understand, so they are looked at as being "weird"...however it is just one of the convictions God has placed on their lives to follow. quote:
I wonder what their older children think. their children are asked and have answered that question in some of the tv specials they have done. They don't have a problem with their choices of a large family. quote:
Or even the doctors and nurses, since they're a regular at the hospital. that I am not sure about...she has had the last few by C-section, and some dr's would question that decision medically of cutting the uterus open time after time, but I don't think it has really become a true problem or issue withe them yet.

How many children did the Patriarch Jacob/Israel have? Large families, historically speaking, aren't all that unusual.

We got surprisingly few negative reactions when we announced #4. Anything above that though would probably get some interesting reactions/looks!

We have one QF family in our church. They have 8 children (she's had 4 miscarriages) and she's 41 now. Their baby is about 13 months I think, so we'll see if they have another soon. They've been pretty steadily about 2 years apart.

Just reading that statement made me internally go through a wave of emotions over different things that were said to me growing up, some in reference to being compared with my sister, some not. If you want specific details, you can PM me, but please, please, please, Maggie, and BlessedMama(sorry, not sure of your real name), please do not say that. I mean, the 2nd one. The baseball one is cute.

I want to have 18 children. I would have as many kids as I can, but Dh doesn't want to and I respect that. We're hoping for four children, biologically or adopted. But we're also hoping to foster one day, so maybe I will get my 18 (and more!) I tell people all of the time that Dh has 9 siblings. In our neighbourhood, most people think that is normal because they also come from countries where large families are the norm. But Canadians tend to let their jaws drop when they hear that. quote:
However, this time when they say "Oh, you're trying for a girl?" I'm going to say "No. A baseball team". Dh's uncle kept trying for a girl....he ended up with 7 boys!

We definitely got the "you're trying for a boy" comments! That's the only way I'm disappointed in having a boy - people think that's why we're done having kids now, now that we got our boy. I always said, no we were definitely not trying for a boy, we simply wanted 4 kids.

I always get the "Don't you know what causes this?" comments when people realize we're expecting #5 ... we just smile and reply that "We have a list of 25 possiblities, and we're crossing them off one by one ... so far golf is not a contributing factor in the baby department." ... they shush up and walk away quite quickly -- either shocked that someone *dare* speak back, or mortified at the thought of 25 children! BTW ... we found out that someone called CPS on us because we are pregnant with #5 ... apparently this person thought 5 children was considered neglectful, as there is "no-way kids can get individual attention" (I found out who called, and she had a hysterectomy after #2 because she couldn't cope with the concept of having any more children -- hers were already driving her up the wall ... she was counting down until school started three years later)

ORIGINAL: OLEEguacamole things i do not like about the duggars: they have a steadfast faith. they share their faith the kids seem to share their faith mr. and mrs. d. still look at each other with a twinkle in their eye they are all well groomed. they are all cheerful a great deal of the time. the whole family works hard. they like babies mr d. has more than one source of income. they are not using public assistance. they are wise with their money their kids enjoy each other's company. the family eats together regularly they invite cameras into their home as if they have nothing to hide they express a great deal of gratitude towards God... ...if more families were like this we would be in big trouble. WOW, that is exactly why I like them. They are SOOOOO BLESSED Hmmm....blessed? So, am I any "less blessed" to have a mere 3 children to their 18? I have basically everything THEY have....minus 15 kids....(except for sons who can do the yardwork!....i have "outsourced" that job!!!!!) A few families at my inlaws church are "on the same path" as the Duggars (their wives are mere "babymaking" machines), so they can be "more blessed" than the rest of us (and don't hesitate to tell you, either!)....and, while the family's income is $20,000 in a "good year", the mom is having baby #6 or 7 (i lost track)..... I would love to see what goes on when the TV cameras are not there... The "false teachings" of bill gothard, which they obviously fully subscribe to, are enough for me to know that something just isn't "right".....what they really "believe", with regards to scripture, is likely to be a twisted mess.... quote:
But these days, 3 is considered "large". 4 or 5 is "showing off" in some circles. Anything beyond that is just plain insane. Yes..there was an article recently (I forget where) that concluded that in many "circles" having 3 or more kids IS a 'status symbol for some people.....bet those with more than 3 kids didn't think about that until they read that! (same as chevy suburban owners, who get "labeled" as driving them for the "Status", but are simply driving them because they are practical for their family.....and last forever).....

of course there are people that flaunt anything for status. but isn't appropriate for the family of one or 18 to say that we are so blessed? and what if let's say mom of 18's sister wanted more than one child and could only have one...the mom of many would rightfully appreciate her abundance. really, when does it become inappropriate to call anything in our lives a blessing?

I would say that they ARE so blessed. I think that it is wonderful that they were able to have so many children that they obviously love very much. It must be so wonderful to have a body that CAN handle so many pregnancy. God has truly blessed them. I have never thought to compare whether or not they are more blessed than our family though. I guess that I am just so happy with our own blessings that it hasn't occurred to me to compare in that way. I really don't understand why some people refer to woman who have many babies as "baby making machines" as if having blessings is a disgusting thing... it is a wonderful thing!

I would say that as long as one is following God's leading in their lives - the three children or one child or 10 children or 20 children, regardless the number the blessing is the same. God blessed me with 4 children before he made if very clear that it was okay with him for us to stop. I don't see my self any less blessed than the Duggars with their 18 or my friends whom have 16 or any more blessed than my neighbors whom have 2. Blessings from God are not numbers based - IMO Blessings, Garsy

I grew up in a large Christian family. I was one of the older ones taking care of one of the younger ones. It always gets to me when they ask the kids if they like the big family. What are they suppose to say? "No, someone get me out of here!" None of my siblings or I told our true feelings. We would just smile and nod. Frankly, I hated it. I hated the amount of chores. I hated not being able to go to so many places that my friends could go to. I worked as soon as I could so I had money AND more time away from home. I have 2 siblings that refuse to have kids and one that only gets together with us at Christmas because he was "overloaded" on family togtherness growing up.

Yeah, I don't really buy much into what the kids say as long as they are under Mom & Dad's roof. They have to smile and make nice for the cameras. Maybe some of them really do enjoy it, but I don't think it's quite as purty and perfect as they show on TV. One kid accidentally slipped up during a special and said "if I have children", and it was one of the girls, too. I have to wonder if anyone if in the family caught that.
