Human pregnancies are normally 38 to 42 weeks long, however the first 2 weeks are actually before conception. But only about two percent of babies are born on their due date, and conception does not necessarily take place on the same day as intercourse, so you really cannot know, until it's too late, lol. As it should be.

Yes, breastfeeding, depending on how it's done and other factors, does act as birth control. She is not too far off, though. Statistically if you do nothing to prevent conception and you breastfeed, your fertility returns at about 9 months and your babies are 18 months apart or so. It's the way our bodies works. This baby is only beating that by a smidge.

Good morning Jenny. My first daughter ws born on due date, the other two were not. Thanks for info about breastfeeding. I have a friend who had babies nine months apart, That really shocked her, and sadly stressed her, because both of them are blind. discalimer:It is genetic and nothing to do with close in age kids. The funny thing is her two kids are the same age for awhile. I do look at birth of children as God's plan, even if it is a suprise. My third was not planned but very much loved.[:D]

I would have no problem with the Duggars if the older children weren't raising the younger ones. They way they do it, I think it's selfish.

Mom was nursing me when she became pregnant with my sister.
I was 2 months old.
My sister is 11 months younger than me.

Breast feeding usually stops menstruation but not ovulation.[;)]

Actually, it DOES suppress ovulation. Not in every case, and you can look up the rules--basically you use no supplementation, feed on demand, etc. It isn't foolproof, but I don't think it's meant to be.

I find it ironic that "Raise your own kids" is considered a poisoned insult by folks who have their children in daycare 40+ hours/week, and yet the Duggars are "not raising their own children" because they have the older children making sure their buddy has underwear on and shoes tied. [8|]

Michelle Duggar is a SAHM. She is her children's homeschool teacher. The family eats together every day. They work together. They worship together. They play together. They aren't spending several hours a day looking at a TV screen. At one point (with "only" 16 children) they lived in a 3 bedroom house (talk about close quarters[&:]). If having the older children be responsible to make sure the relationally unimportant but necessary things get done so that they're free to get to the fun stuff quicker, more power to them. Those 18 kids probably get more "face time" with mom and dad than a large portion of the one and two child families in this nation.

Maybe people's perception of the buddy system is what causes the issue. The way I envision it working, I have no problem with it. I am not "on" my kids 24/7, individually brushing each tooth and putting their socks and shoes on until they're 8 years old. As soon as they can wash themselves, they do it. I'm glad my 5 yo reminds my 3 yo to use the potty. If they can work together to get their beds made, room tidy, shoes found, then we have more time for sitting at the table over breakfast together, reading books together, and enjoying each other's company. If an older child can help with a younger child's buckle's, then we are on our way to have fun at the park that much quicker. The more they can help themselves and their siblings, the more efficiently the necessary household stuff is done and the more time we have for relationship.

That is a good point, but I do think that most people that object to that format don't object on the basis that they aren't getting enough time with their parents, but that they don't think it's fair to the older girls to have to take care of their siblings. I think some people think they are overworked, that the parents are using them as slave labor.

Personally, I'm kind of in the middle on the whole Duggar thing. I think they are interesting, but I'm not a groupie or anything. I don't aspire to be just like them, but I think on the whole their kids are going to grow up and be just fine.

I don't think children should be raising other children at all. I take issue with the youngest child getting to be "mom's buddy" until the next one comes along, which appears to be less than two years in this family. Can you imagine turning over your 2-year-old to anyone else--sibling or otherwise--so that you can "buddy" your new baby? I'll bet not.

I did a lot of taking care of my younger siblings, so I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing. We didn't have a sophisticated buddy system, because the little ones outnumbered the older ones, but we just helped out a lot. We usually took turns with diapers and things. When I became a parent I felt like I knew what I was doing, and it was helpful for me.
