We just cashed in part of DH's retirement for home renovations...new carpeting, new flooring in the dining room and kitchen, repair to the front porch, etc....

However...in my head, I have spent this money about 10...or a thousand times...on quite frivolous things. SOOOoooo, my question is:

You have been given $10,000, how do you spend it?

disclaimer...we are spending the money as we planned...I am talking about if you didn't HAVE to spend it on necessities...

29redballoons -> RE: Have Fun With Me (5/9/2008 10:27:11 PM)

Okay,

I would buy a new wardrobe of sorts...at least several new outfits with shoes and assessories to match. (maybe one or two for dh also)
I want a plasma tv to go above our mantle.
A new set of living room furniture in leather.
DD a new bedroom set, and redecorate room to match.
Last but not least...a golf cart to cruise around the neiborhood in.....

teeheee, a far stretch from the reality, isn't it????

BlessedMamaofmany -> RE: Have Fun With Me (5/9/2008 10:31:12 PM)

oh boy! I would get all new hardwood floors for my new house...not a necessity, but a 'someday' want for sure. A new fridge, and a flattop stove. Again, all wants.

Let's see...assuming I didn't want new appliances...
Then we would use some for a wicked long family vacation. We've always wanted to drive route 66 all the way, so that's what we'd do. Just disappear for awhile kwim?
Then I would use some on an wonderfully fancy digital camera, 'cause I love taking photos.
I would also use some for a fancy new laptop

Sandy

I don't know.....I am not a good one to ask about things like this though. I guess fixing things around the house that need it.
We got a sign up bonus a few years ago...it was essentially what hubby makes in a year all in one lump sum because he signed up again for six years (and it was tax free because he was deployed when he did it). With that we paid cash for our van!!!!! Got the home computer and he got a laptop downrange, got the digital camera and camcorder, plane tickets, and a few other "big ticket" items that we would never have the money to get if it wasn't for that. We didn't have this house then (lived in military housing) so we didn't have to use it for fix-up things....but that would have been a nice way to use it too.

HomeSpunLady -> RE: Have Fun With Me (5/10/2008 8:34:21 AM)

New or newer used car. We are still debating on whether or not to get a bigger one. My current one is hard for me to get out of when I'm pregnant and would work for around the town stuff, but long distance I'm not sure we could do with two kids, our stuff and their stuff. We are stuffed right now with all the stuff. But you can't compete with 38 miles to the gallon.

uponeagleswings -> RE: Have Fun With Me (5/11/2008 5:48:07 PM)

We've been round and round debating this question lately, and right now ours would be to pay off all debt except for our house- we had a new AC unit put in in Jan, and we have 12 months to pay that off interest free, we would pay off our car early, and that would pretty much take care of that money.
Now if we weren't using it to pay off debt, we would:
Finish redoing our living room- paint, entertainment center, furniture, larger tv
Get a nicer frame for our bed
Probably get my hubby a new desk

MrsTracy72 -> RE: Have Fun With Me (5/12/2008 2:26:17 PM)

I would use it for my house. I am sure that anyone who lives in a house that they didn't have built themselves can burn throught that in a heartbeat. I know we could.

HisCovenant -> RE: Have Fun With Me (5/12/2008 3:23:18 PM)

If I had an extra 10,000, I'd either buy dh a Harley Davidson motorcycle, a new bedroom suite, or would save it back to buy a new home.

Fun question!

Well, we just bought a new couch and loveseat for our next rental place so we don't need those. But when we move into our new house at the end of the year we will need furniture for our den.

Sooo, I would use that money to buy a comfy contemporary sectional, book shelves, more books, a roll top desk, a wardrobe for my crafts, a table for plants, a bunch of plants, a new coffee table and side tables, and a couple of nice lamps.

I would also buy a new BBQ since ours will be too big for our new place.

I would buy wooden blinds for all of our windows.

I would buy a few canvases and make my own paintings.

I know this wouldn't cost $10,000 so I guess I would use the rest to go on a few nice vacations.

lexie -> RE: Have Fun With Me (5/12/2008 3:49:46 PM)

We have budgeted $10,000 to use to fix up our house when we finally buy it. I've been thinking and thinking and thinking about what I will do with a house.

Here is what we have decided will be done before we move in:
-new floors downstairs
-new kitchen - counters, cupboards, floor...all new! I want to lay it out the way I want it.
-paint all the rooms
-finish the basement (if not already finished)
-put in a library (floor to ceiling shelving on two or three of walls, a desk and a comfy chair to read in)
-update bathrooms

We're hoping to buy a fixer upper, because we have great plans for just the house we want. And I'm sure it seems like a lot, but my BIL has a home renovation business so he, Dh and their other brothers can do the house together and we don't have to pay labour!

ChiefWannahakaloogie -> RE: Have Fun With Me (5/12/2008 3:51:36 PM)

i'd buy tons of food and bake a cake for everyone i know.

actually i'd prolly give it to my parents for their debt [8|]

BUT! if there was no debt, i'd buy food! [:D]

MrsTracy72 -> RE: Have Fun With Me (5/13/2008 2:21:27 PM)

Ok Lexie, what if you find a house that has already been all fixed up and just needs some fresh paint and redecorating? Then how would you spend it?

We just sold our house and while we lived here, we replaced the windows, flooring, bathroom, the kitchen was already done and the basement already had a finished room. But I did learn one thing while living here. We also replaced the heating and air conditioning systems.

When we get into our new house, we are NOT going to put carpeting in our basement or finish off the walls. Our current basement doesn't leak, but it is a basement and no matter what, you can't escape the dampness that you get in the summer months, and that smell just hangs on in the carpeting.

But I have so many plans for our new house and WISH I was starting out with 10K to work with. But we are going to do things little by little. Necessary things first, then flooring. Other than the flooring, I am not going to change anything but maybe the paint when I figure out exactly what colors I would like to have.

Memaw. -> RE: Have Fun With Me (5/13/2008 4:00:31 PM)

I would blow every last cent on a cruise![:)]

29redballoons -> RE: Have Fun With Me (5/13/2008 4:45:07 PM)

Well....so far, we have bought a new sofa and chair...and a 32" plasma television...the rest is on hold for carpeting, but it did feel good to buy the furniture. It should be delivered this Saturday!

Shugs -> RE: Have Fun With Me (5/13/2008 4:57:22 PM)

I'd buy a new guitar! Buy a bass and some sweet amps!!!!! And of course a lady never has enough clothes shoes or accessories!
I'd dress my son in style!!!!

We are putting some money aside for a new bed when we move. We have decided to try a sleep number bed because we want a king size bed, and after shopping around, we found that they are no more expensive, and in some cases cheaper than regular mattress and boxspring sets.

sunshine4God -> RE: Have Fun With Me (5/14/2008 12:58:40 AM)

I would go on a Disney Cruise
buy a plasma tv
and buy myself a laptop.

amycolumbiana -> RE: Have Fun With Me (5/14/2008 4:15:26 AM)

I would buy clothes, clothes and more clothes.....oh yeah and shoes to match! LOL [:)]

Tracy,
The sleep number bed will be our next bed too.
This past December we bought a new king mattress and box springs (high dollar name brand) and I still have "hot spots" in my hips and shoulders.

PrincessButtercup -> RE: Have Fun With Me (5/14/2008 9:27:45 AM)

$10,000??? Sahweet.

First, I'd have to tithe on it, so then I'm down to $9,000. But hey, I can do lots with that.

I would probably end up just saving it for my future wedding because I know my parents won't be able to afford it. Haha!

_Cinderella_ -> RE: Have Fun With Me (5/14/2008 3:22:55 PM)

Would spend most of it paying off our credit card balances. It would be so nice to have a 0 balance on those things!

Then we would use most the rest for a down payment on a new-to-us car.

And maybe we would go out and have a nice dinner [;)]

I would be scared to spend that much on clothes. What if I gained/lost a bunch of weight? [&:] That is what I always think of when I see someone spend a ton of money on clothing. [8D][:D]

Oh yay!!!! That is awesome!

29redballoons -> RE: Have Fun With Me (5/14/2008 10:25:00 PM)

I think this is the set of furniture we got...or it is very similar. We got the sofa and what is call a chair and a half. It is like a small love seat.

29redballoons -> RE: Have Fun With Me (5/15/2008 10:42:41 PM)

Okay, can someone at least give me an opinion?

PrincessDonna -> RE: Have Fun With Me (5/16/2008 9:14:49 AM)

((((((((((Red))))))))) Nice![:D]

$10,000, and we're having fun with it...hmmmm...

-fake wood laminate flooring in the entire downstairs of my house...ahhhhh
-a week-long family vacation...renting a cabin in the mountains
-a week-long vacation for Brian and I...oh, heaven
-buy the kids a really cool wooden swingset
-buy gift cards to restaurants and theaters and use them for date nights
-pay cash for a small car for Brian (yes, even in fun mode)
-new computer!!!
-have a BBQ and invite all our friends
-give some anonymously to friends going through financial struggles

Of course, IRL...we'd probably take a few days for a family vacation and use the rest to pay down debt, starting with paying the van off.
