Sandy...we tried VTC three times when Paul was deployed...and three times we were disappointed (and I had to deal with that in the kids) when different things went wrong...like someone in the pentagon taking over our satellite time....or them forgetting to tell Paul that we were scheduled to do it....or others taking too much time on their scheduled apts and them running out of time then and the last two people not getting to do it. It really got old. After the third time I told the FRG director to stop scheduling us because I couldn't deal with any more of not getting to do them

Donna, we our VBS did Power Lab, too! Hey, that's neat. I was especially tickled because I'm a science geek. Everything looked beautiful. 
My cousin has three bambinos. The last one is quite the miracle baby, because he came after she'd successfully fought breast cancer. She was one of the youngest known patients ever with breast cancer in the state of NY, and she'd discovered the lump when nursing baby number two.
Anywhoo.... she HS her kids, but two days a week they attend an HS co-op, where I guess the parents hold classes in subjects they are strongest in. I always thought that if I did something like that, I'd love to teach math and physics.

Both of which are often in need by hs families. Have you thought of offering tutoring or small classes to your local hs support group? That's something people are often willing to pay for. You could probably do that mostly from home even!
Also, our Christian school is always looking for people who are qualified to teach upper level math and sciences, and I'm sure other Christian schools go through the same thing. You have no lack of options, should you decide to return to work someday!

Hey those are fantastic ideas! Greg has encouraged my love of teaching, because he says that my experience as a "real life" engineer will help me bring the theory of those subjects to life for my students.
I've been hesitant to return to full time engineering, even once my babies are older, but I would like to help bring in some money when they aren't so dependent on me.
I've thought about returning to school and getting my master's in education and teaching license (which would take a year), but I'm not totally sold on that either.
ETA: I would need a teaching license anyway to teach at a CS, but it's still something I've been praying a lot about. I guess I have time to think about it.

Are you sure you would need a teaching license to teach at a CS? Most of our teachers do not, but maybe it's different in different places. IMO, it is not a piece of paper that makes our teachers great...it is their love for the kids and God, and their experience in whatever area they are teaching.
My bestest friend has 4 little kids. Before kids and fresh out of college, she was MY math teacher at the CS. LOL She now often tutors hs kids or even kids from ps or cs who need a little extra help in math or science.

No, I don't know for certain. All the teachers at our church's school are "called", that means they are synodically trained (they actually go to a Lutheran seminary) and go through a formal calling process just like a pastor. But there are plenty of other CS's out there.
I guess I'd assumed that a CS would prefer someone who is licensed. I'm sure it's a totally different animal to teach an entire classroom then a few kids. I guess that's where I thought that the teaching classes came in handy.
I'll keep praying about it. But thanks for the ideas and encouragement. You're a real blessing, Donna!
PS: My parents have a log cabin, too. It's beautiful.

Ruth...check your state's rules and regs....I know most states only require a teaching license if you are a permanent full time teacher...part time or fill in's don't need it. In fact fill ins (like substitute teachers) don't even require any college at all in TX... I know from personal experience.

State rules and regs don't always apply to private schools though. They don't to ours...we don't have to have the 180 days the ps has to, teachers don't have to be certified, etc. Best to check with any CS you might want to work at and see what THEY require.
Being on the BOE of the CS, I am part of the hiring process. All other things being equal, yes, certified teachers are preferred. But what we look at more than that is whether the person is competent and qualified to teach what we are hiring them for, whether their teaching style is fit for our school (very small classes...not at all the same as larger ps classes), and most importantly, their Christian walk. Everything else can be in line perfectly but we will not hire someone who is not willing to be held to a high Biblical standard.
I'm glad I could give you some more ideas to think about.

Great pictures, Donna. Your family looks like they had a blast.
We just fooled around in the morning and then in the afternoon cooked for the BBQ with our neighbors. I made deviled eggs, pork ribs, and homemade vanilla ice cream. Today, we are doing stuff around the house. Dh is weeding the front flower bed and I'll be checking on my garden in a few minutes.

Some Christian schools might require you be certified but not necessarily. Most Christian Schools are part of ACSI: Association of Christian Schools International. They have their own certification and accredidation processes and their graduates don't have problems being accepted at secular colleges because of it. Also, even if you are accredited secularly at a CS they won't necessarily require you to take the state mandated continuing education to stay that way. ACSI certification requires continuing education but it is more in the areas of philosophies of Christian education and can generally be met by attending the ACSI teachers' convention every couple years.

Donna, love the pictures! I always wonder what everyone looks like and their families. It is nice to put a face with the person.
We have been somewhat of bums today, but its been nice. I did get our bedroom clean and vacuumed though I still need to do our bathroom. It is so hard to clean with a toddler following you and undoing all my work. Luckily hubby is home so I gave him to daddy and shut the door. Now I know why I clean when he is asleep...I get more done. We go to the neighbors for dinner in an hour and a half so hopefully that will go well. That is about it for our weekend

I'm curious what you mean by that. Do you go through their house to look for alcohol and Harry Potter? Are certain denominations automatically out?

I am not Donna but my mom and I both work for a Christian school. At ours they don't come inspect your home or anything like that. However, they ask you about your Christian walk. They get a recommendation from your pastor. They might have a code of conduct that they expect of everyone involved in the school: teachers, parents, students that you would have to agree to follow. On the application they ask you what you think about certain topics. This school is an interdenominational school so anyone who was involved in a Protestant church that agreed with their statement of faith would be open for consideration. HERE is a link to the teacher's application. I guess they don't ask anymore what you believed about certain topics but they used to. If there were specific things they were interested in I'm sure it would come up in your interview with the board.
When I was hired they already knew me because of my mom and I was applying for a substitute teacher position (my mom was having surgery and would be out for several weeks). Then I re-interviewed about the extended care position I hold now. That was just a matter of meeting with the woman who ran the program and then clearing it with the headmaster and maybe the board.
