I'm putting together a new YouTube playlist and I need some help brianstorming. Right now, my Gw/G playlist includes:

Shawn Colvin
Indigo Girls
Nancy Griffin
Sarah McLachlan
Ani DiFranco
Mary-Chapin Carpenter
Juliana Hatfield
Aimee Mann

I plan to include:

Joan Baez
Michelle Shocked
Joni Mitchell
Breeders

But I'm drawing a blank any further. Oh, maybe Belly? Someone help me think.

Tori Amos

I have never seen Tori Amos play a guitar. I mean, she has guitars on her records. But she pretty much tickles ivories.

Brooke Fraser ... I think she plays guitar for most of her songs if not all.

Checking Brooke Fraser, Rachael Rachael, Margaret Becker. Joan Jett and Pat Benatar, while I love them, don't fit the mood.

I'm also adding Tracy Chapman and Suzanne Vega. Maybe Lucinda Williams.

(Edited to add that Sheryl Crow and Jewel will not be on this list. Can't stand either of them.)

Totally digging this Brooke Fraser person.

Bill apparently wants me to rock out.

I did think about Bonnie Raitt.

Are you wanting women who play guitar, specifically?

If you're going to add Belly, then add Throwing Muses and Kristin Hersh.

It would appear you're going for a singer-songwriter vibe? Except you have the Breeders on there. If you're going with the Deal sisters, Kelly Deal 6000.

Singer-songwriters:

Heather Nova
Brandi Carlisle
Phranc
Sinead O'Connor
Lisa Loeb
Jewel

Women who play guitar:

Carla Bozulich, any of her bands
Blood Bliss, "
PJ Harvey
Liz Phair

And all of the country women, who play.

And Avril Lavigne, a-ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha...

Ah yes, thank you. I especially like Kristin Hersh.

And I did think of Liz Phair and then promptly forgot her. Lisa Loeb, too. I just don't want anything heavy; I do dig the singer-songwriter vibe.

Found Rachael Rachael on YouTube, and oddly, they were doing a cover of Carry On Wayward Son. hee hee They certainly do "rock" though.

Mostly I came up with Rachel Brice. You may not know who that is, but I do.

Party on, Garth!!

So ya want more mellow stuff? Check out Jill Phillips and Kendall Payne. Definite singer/songwriter stuff from those 2. They both play guitar, too.

I'm guessing the Go-Go's and Bangles are out?

Do you take posthumus postings? I know of no video this gal made but was a really great guitarist: April Lawton. She played lead guitar with Ramatam back in the early/mid 70s and that gal could ROCK!!!!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/April_Lawton

I also like Bonnie Rait (fantastic slide work) and Nancy Wilson of Heart.

Pat Benetar maybe then?
Actually it was her husband who did the guitar work....

Yeah, I remember that video. Kerry Livgren (from Kansas, who wrote the song) is the guy who comes in late and then plugs in just in time to do the solo.....

Maybelle Carter (Carter family)
Melissa Ethridge
Cheryl Crow
Gillian Welch
Susan Tedeschi
a ton of singer-songwriter guitarists like Eilen Jewell

Usually when this subject comes up I see names like Charo (yes, Charo from The Love Boat), Lita Ford, and Kaki something also mentioned.

Laugh if you must but if Charo did a serious Spanish/flamenco style performance without the cuchi, cuchi (spanish spelling since she says it with an accent ) she would kick butt. But then again that's a very big if.

I've seen Charo perform and yes, she's quite good. I love her--used to watch the MDA telethon every year to see her!!!

I was going to say Lucinda Williams but saw that you already added her as a maybe. Dolly Parton can play well--even with those fingernails--but I'm not sure if she fits the "tone" of your list.

Question: Can they be bass players? Naomi Yang from Galaxie 500 played a mean bass.
