I have planted my first official garden at my house. Mom was mentioning that people use human hair in or around their gardens to keep rabbits out. Has anyone else heard of this? If so, how much do I use and where do I put it? I would love to not have to put up a fence.

I have never heard of it. Perhaps it is thought that the scent of human beings would discourage rabbits from being around. (Any idea floating around will eventually make its way to someone's article on the internet.)

I haven't heard that one but I have heard that sprinkling black pepper around the plants should keep the rabbits away.

I've heard that for deer (or other predators hair like dog, etc). I know some people who mulched with the stuff. Not sure how well it worked. I've also heard strategically placed urine works. [;)]

My husband's aunt swears by really perfumed soap like Irish Spring. She breaks off chunks and sets them around (not in) the garden.

If you do use it you may need quite a bit. Its nesting season where I live and stray hair gets picked up.

I've heard that hair can be used for different things in the garden, but can't think exactly what off-hand. It generally goes in my compost bin.

As lexie said, pepper will probably work ~ it keeps the squirrels away from my bulbs[:D] I think I use the white pepper though (I use the cheapest I can find!) and reapply after rain.

I suspect that any synthetic or human odors will have only a temporary effect. If they get used to humans, the scent thing would probably lose its effectiveness. It would probably capitalize on an animal's inherent fear of man and the association with us.

My mom is a hairdresser and she used to have a customer that wanted all the (non-treated) hair that she cut to put in her garden. I don't know if it was intended to fend off the rabbits or for fertilizer?

Also, I am a soapmaker and read something from another soaper on how she uses her "scraps" from cutting/trimming soap after unmolding. (I'm talking real soap, not the melt/pour stuff.) She gave some scraps to a lady that had an orchard and she hung bundles of soap from some of the trees. Her deer problem seemed to have gone way down (or maybe even gone altogether). Every now and then I'll throw bits of soap in the (flower) garden to fend off insects.

I'd love to have a veggie garden (imagine the canning I could do!) but I have entirely too many squirrels around here! I've also noticed a few stray cats. Darnit.

There is a huge tree not 10 feet from the end of my garden. Have a couple of squirrels that live in it and I have no way of keeping them out of my garden. Doesn't stop me growing veggies. I grew beans, tomatoes, onions, carrots, beetroot, salad leaves and radish last year that I can recall. Slugs and snails were more of a problem than squirrels and the neighbours cats (which will stay away if you put pepper down).

As for the slugs and snails this year ~ I've discovered copper rings and while I've found some snails on the raised bed where my beans are growing, they're not inside of the ring[:D]

Really? The squirrels didn't bother your stuff? Of course, I have a lot of trees around the neighborhood and several around my backyard alone (none in the center anymore though). I've only planted flowers and stuff (no veggies) and the squirrells and chipmunks like to dig holes around my plants. They destroyed about 6 plants by doing this so I figured veggies were a no-go. What kind of pepper wards off cats?

I've never done vegetable gardening before so I'm not sure where to start anyway. But I'd love to see how I can do with it. Any tips?

I buy the cheapest (ground) pepper that I can. I sprinkle it round my plants and over the ground my bulbs are in and reapply when I remember, but especially after rain. And my slugs and snails get salted (despite the copper rings, I still get rid of them when I can). Using salt and pepper as the plants are growing saves me seasoning when I'm cooking[;)][:D]

I love growing veggies. What do you like eating? That's the most important question! I'm growing similar to what I grew last year, though only on a small scale. I have a tiny garden and have a mix of flowers and veggies and a couple of fruit bushes and strawberry plants. I'm probably not the most dedicated gardener (this is really only my second year) but I'm learning a lot (don't overwater cuc seedlings and don't put tomato seedlings out in the sun because they die[&:][:(]).

ROFL!!!!

I love corn, but don't really care to have stalks in my yard. lol Strawberries, carrots, potatoes, green beans, broccoli... I just bought some blackberry bushes (though they're only mere sticks now) for my blackberry jelly. I'm thinking of using some of the juice I make to make syrup too - I bet it'd be awesome (the strawberry syrup is)!! I like cucumbers but hate the seeds. What about pickling cucumbers? I don't like tomatoes but would like to grow some anyway (dd likes them) for canning salsa, tomato sauce/paste and such. Might even try my hand at ketchup and bbq sauce.

Oh, I'm growing potatoes in bags too. First year I've done it. I'm growing a heritage variety (pink fur). Right now I have lots of plants growing above so I'm hoping I'm getting potatoes below!

Never pickled cucs, but I'm trying to grow a yellow variety right now.

Give it a go with a couple of different veggies and see what happens ~ if you just start small this year, you won't loose much if the squirrels do get 'em. You should still be able to get seeds/plants around (though it may be a bit late for starting from seed for some things).
