Depicting him as a monkey (cartoon or not) is a racial slur.
People where I live still refer to blacks as monkeys, apes, baboons.

I think a lot of you, but here in south Alabama I have never, ever, in my 56 years heard even the most rabid bigot refer to blacks as monkeys, apes, or baboons. Maybe we are more liberal than GA or FL....

The only time I heard it referrenced in my 65 years (other than on this forum and by liberals) was a the Memphis Zoo a few years past, as my wife and I were watching their prize gorilla "Dinga) go through his antict, a black family standing next to us, was laughing uncontrollably and hollering loudly how "Uncle George" looks just like and acts just the same as "Dinga" the gorilla.

Now was that racist?

Thanks
RC

HUH? so the noose in Gena was not a racist thing ?

Let's ask any survivors of lynching if they feel it is what?

Was never proven to be.

According to Craig Franklin, assistant editor of The Jena Times, the nooses were actually a prank by three students aimed at white members of the school rodeo team in school proceedings, and that the school's investigating committee had concluded that "the three young teens had no knowledge that nooses symbolize the terrible legacy of the lynchings of blacks in American history." A black teacher described seeing both white and black students "playing with [the nooses], pulling on them, jump-swinging from them, and putting their heads through them" that same day. The Jena Times reported that the nooses were removed by 7:55 a.m. after school officials were informed.

What kind of proof you need that nooses are racist symbols?

Here's something to help you maybe.

http://withoutsanctuary.org/

Believe me, I have friends in Gena, La. Family all over La.

they knew, else why hang it? Especially in La. they know!

You really believe that? A prank, how insulting! I wonder did any lynched peoples feel it was a prank.

tracy,

The logic of your assumptions is false. Based on your assertions, pagans should fear a bonfire and be insulted that anyone would make one. Maybe people want to burn them at the stake.

I am not an Obama supporter. Too liberal for me. That does not make me a racist. What would make me a racist is belittling him due to his ancestry or identified racial grouping. Or making derogatory t-shirts with his face on a monkey's body.

Doesn't anyone see the irony of who is being up in arms? GWB has been called the smirking chimp by those very same people. There's even a website called smirkingchimp.com. Here's a collage comparing him to chimpanzees.

WES, what you are saying is false and insulting. Black people were lynched many times in this country.

They put the noose there AFTER black kids asked can they sit there.

It was racist.

just like comparing BO to a monkey is racist.

WRONG! I was posting on the local newspaper forums during all of this and several people who know all of the kids involved said that kids of both races stuck their heads in the nooses and that the three boys that did it were 14 year olds who aren't the smartest bunch of kids. They really were clueless.

Grambling on the other hand indoctrinates 5 & 6 year olds perpetuating the racism. Kids that age do not know. They have to be taught.

I meant the people whining about this. Don't you see the irony? GWB has been run through the wringer, caricatured as a chimpanzee for nearly the entire 8 years of his presidency.

I am sorry. I did not know you were an eyewitness. I can only read several different versions of what happened.

My statement was just to show that your logic is lacking. I do not know what the point was in hanging them. In this thread, it is neither here nor there. In this thread, we are speaking of monkeys and politicians. I already said that I thought it was probably motivated by a racial statement, but that does not mean that we should use that example of behavior to claim widespread racism is prevalent. I live in the deep south, and I know that racism exists (just not on the scale that is being claimed).

Dearest Tracy, I stand by what I said. Granted, none of the men (including me) on either side of my family were ever in the KKK, but my statement is completely true. I've heard several epithets used against blacks and have clear memories of segregated water fountains, buses, schools, bathrooms, and even restaurants, but I never heard anyone refer to blacks as monkeys, apes, or baboons. I'm not saying everyone I knew never did, but they somehow managed to never do it within my hearing.

And, FWIW, neither Selma nor Birminham are in south Alabama.

According to a local pastor, community wide revival has broken out.

The noose is racist. Period.

Comparing monkeys to black people racist.

What is the scale of racism, how can we measure it?

I read a study that said 6% of americans believe we are racist,

12% still believe Elvis is alive.

But this panic over a cartoon is stupid

Now you are boring becasue you read what you want to read, not what is there

Maybe not your kinfolks but never heard it?

OK.

Why don't you just call me a liar - a white, racist liar - and be done with it. I respect honesty in anyone, regardless of their political preferences...

BTW & FWIW, my oldest grandson (17 in March) is half black and half white and I would never intentionally call him crude racist name or compare him to an ape or monkey. Regardless of what you might think. But I would vote for him if he ever runs for public office.

What, pray tell, is the correct response to all these nasty racists? Do we pump up there statements to ensure that they have a negative impact on society? That does seem to be the most popular response.
