Right after David was born our computer got a virus and died completely. Chris hooked up our other computer today, so I am back online!! I felt very lost without being able to get online and talk to you ladies.

We have been using cloth diapers but our washing machine quit working today. We took David for his circumcision today and he did really well. We are using disposable diapers until he is healed, but I am praying we can get the washing machine fixed soon anyway.

Nursing just didn't work for us. I tried so hard for 5 days. David would not latch on properly no matter how much I tried. We were both getting frustrated and I was in pain and worried about him not eating enough. I have decided to try to pump so he can still get the benefits of breast milk. So far, that is going well. (If I have questions about pumping do I post in the Mommy's Milk thread or When Breast Wasn't Best thread?"

I will try to post some pictures and my birth story as soon as possible. My baby boy does not look like a newborn. From day 1 he has been able to roll from his back to his side and hold up his head when I lay down and put him on my chest. Now that he is eating well he is a very good baby and doesn't cry much at all.

Welcome back Emily! Congrats on your little one.

I'd post pumping questions in the Mommys Milk thread, since its still breast milk.

If you are going to pump exclusively I would buy and start taking some sort of supplement. More Milk Plus is great, it has all the major supply increaser's in one tincture. I know Vitamin Cottage sells an "off" brand that is MUCH cheaper.

Hmm, I'm pretty sure it has Fenugreek, Blessed Thistle, and Goats Rue.

Oatmeal will also increase your supply.

what kind of pump do you have emily?

Katmac and ummm...can't remember who else...did a lot of pumping. I will send Kat a PM to check it out over here in case she doesn't check over here. Oh man...who was it that also pumped exclusively.....Kat also BF.....hmmm....Maybe Donna remembers who it was...it was a few years ago...but she has lots of wisdom in that area.

FaunTumnus (sp?) pumped exclusively for 2 babies. I think she made it close to 1 year with no formula at all. Stories like hers are what kept me going when I thought I would never be able to BF Reagan.

I think there was another lady who pumped...her handle was...kristilynx or something like that. She called her son Bug. I don't think I've seen her around for a while though.

Emily, someone on TheBaby Wearer is selling an Ameda Purely Yours for $65, they retail for quite a bit more and it's a closed system so it's safe for more then one user.

My long birth story:

My water broke at 8:30 pm on Thursday June 12. I had been feeling great all day and I had a ton of energy. My mom took me to the grocery store to get some shopping done because I was 3 days past my due date and she didn’t want me to go alone. Chris got home from work around 8:30 and as soon as he got home my water broke. I called my midwife (I’ll call her D) to let her know and she told me to go to bed and try to get some sleep. I was so excited so I took a shower to try to relax. I didn’t end up falling asleep until close to midnight.

Around 3:00 am I woke up with a really bad backache. I got up and got online for a while and by 4:30 I was having painful contractions 7 minutes apart. I got in the bathtub and tried to relax a little. By 6:00 the contractions were about 4 minutes apart and I couldn’t handle the pain by myself any more so I woke Chris up. I got out of the tub and tried different positions to deal with the pain. I was having horrible back labor and nothing was helping. Around 7:00 we called my mom and told her to come on over. She was in the shower but only lives 7 minutes away so she and my sister Jessica got here really quickly. My mom later realized that she forgot to rinse the shampoo out of her hair. When they got here I was back in the tub and the contractions were less than 2 minutes apart. Chris called the midwife and told her to get here quickly. At this point I was in the bath tub on my hands and knees with Chris pouring hot water on my back and my mom fanning my face and helping me breathe. My midwife got here a little after 8:00. She checked me and I was 8-9 centimeters dilated. My mom and sister set up the birthing pool in the dinning room while D helped me through the contractions and Chris ran back and forth helping set up the pool and helping me. By this point the contractions were coming one on top of the other and I was crying and saying I couldn’t do it anymore.

I finally got in the pool which helped a little. By this point I was fully dilated and ready to push. I pushed for 2 hours. During that time the other midwife (A) came over. According to Chris I said some pretty funny things while in labor but I don’t remember any of it. I remember feeling like I was going to throw up, but I never did. David’s head came out but his shoulders got stuck. I was on my hands and knees in the water and the midwives were telling me I had to get the baby out now. My sister was crying, my mom and A were praying out loud and Chris was telling me that I had to push as hard as I could to get the baby out. At that point I didn’t know what was going on, but I was exhausted and felt like I couldn’t push any more. Both midwives reached in and hooked a finger under his arm pits. I gave one more hard push while they pulled and he came out. When I saw him for the first time it was the most horrible feeling in the world. He was completely blue/gray and I thought he was dead. The midwives suctioned his nose and mouth and used a resuscitation bag to help him breathe. After 3 long minutes he finally let out a loud cry. They handed him to me and covered him with a blanket. We waited a while for the cord to stop pulsing and then Chris cut it. They wrapped David in a dry blanket and handed him to Chris. David was born around 10:20 am, but it was so hectic at the time no one bothered to check the time.

A short time later I delivered the placenta. They got me out of the pool and wrapped in a towel but I was very weak and had to sit in a chair for a while. After a few minutes they helped me to my bed. My uterus wasn’t contraction like it should so they gave me some herbal stuff to help it contract. I ended up having an internal tear that required 6 stitches and a vaginal prolapse. I ended up losing a lot of blood and was weak and exhausted the rest of the day. I didn’t get to hold David much at all the first day he was born. After the midwives took care of me they weighed and measured David. He weighed 9 pounds and 8 ounces. He was 20 ¾ inched long and had a 14 inch head and a 15 inch chest. Overall the first stage of labor lasted about 4 ½ hours and the pushing stage lasted 2 hours.

Emily - What an incredible birth story, thanks for sharing!!! I still haven't written mine out - I'm waiting for the midwives to give me a copy of the records so I can get the times right ... things were a bit blurry at the time!

Sorry to hear about the shoulder dystocia, but I'm glad that the m/ws were able to manage it effectively and you didn't have to go to the hospital!

I am VERY thankful for all of the prayer we had for us that day. You ladies are wonderful!!

Yes, he is a very big boy. None of his newborn size clothes or diapers fit at all. Everyone is shocked that I had such a big baby. He is also very strong. When they were doing the newborn exam he rolled from his back to his side and he does that a lot. Also, if I lay down and put him on my chest he can hold his head up really well. He also has a strong grip (especially when he is pooping!!)

I am feeling better. I am still bleeding some, but it's not bad at all. The stitched itch and burn a bit and I feel bruised down there, but I guess that for just having such a big baby I am doing really well.

Kim-some of my times are a bit fuzzy too. I just kind of guessed on a lot of them.

My midwives were wonderful. If I would have had him in the hospital I probably would have ended up with an episiotomy and a forceps or vacuum delivery. It was a difficult labor and delivery and was more painful than I ever would have imagined, but I am glad I decided to have him at home assited by the 3 people I am closest to and 2 women that I trusted very much.

You did amazing, thanks for sharing your story!!

He is absolutely adorable but he doesn't look much like a newborn! Mary was only half a pound smaller but she didn't look nearly as big as him!!
