I put it in quotes (as well as the gluten sensitive) because they were diagnosed, but since they can tolerate the milk/wheat in its original unprocessed state, it can't really be the lactose/gluten, you know?
Hubby tests gluten sensitive, yet with a high quality brand of organic Vital Wheat Gluten (which is the pure stuff) he tests fine. So it can't be the gluten, but something that is done during the growing or processing of what is normally marketed.

Hello everyone!
I have done my research on raw milk and there are legitamite reasons to be worried about the dangers of raw milk. Even though there are friendly bacteria in milk that is raw, there is also harmful bacteria that is alive in raw milk. These harmful bacteria cause illnesses such as listeriosis, typhoid fever, tuberculosis, diphtheria, and brucellosis.
You cannot deny it. I think I read one poster even on this topic who said someone contacted TB from raw milk. So, there are dangers

I am not saying drinking raw milk cannot be good for you, but there are also the risks you need to keep in mind.

And one other thing. I do agree that the pasteurization/processing of foods do kill a lot of the nutrients in them. I agree. Honey is a very good example of that. But Honey is good for you all around. There are antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, and enzymes that are very good for you that are found in Honey in its un-pasteurized state. Honey is a food. Whereas milk is a liquid, not a food, and there's where the dangers hit of the unfriendly bacteria, especially with all the fat which unfriendly bacteria can cling too. Where Honey has no fat. Milk is just one of the ONLY foods that should be processed.

I wish we could...the only place I know of that does it here is about 45 min out of town, and $7.50/gallon.

I am not denying that a single bit. But, when you get raw milk from Organic food stores, seriously, how trustworthy would you think it is? Someone can claim this milk came from a healthy animal from a clean environment, but how much can you truly trust these people?
Milk is not like Honey or any other food, when you play with milk, you can be playing with someone's life. This can be a serious problem.

I totally agree with you there. I wouldn't buy it in a store. I would buy it locally so I could see the animals and the environment for myself and get to know the farmer.

Stores are allowed to sell it? I am thinking not in the US. I know for sure not in my state.
You are right on about not trusting Organic labeling in stores as being clean, good farming practices, though.

I looked up my states regulation on raw milk. You are only allowed to get it from the farms themselves. Not allowed to sell in stores.
Illinois
Raw milk sales are legal on the farm if the farmer complies with the following conditions:
1. No advertising the sale of raw milk.
2. Customers must bring their own individual containers. If the farmer uses his own container to bottle the milk, he is operating a "milk plant" according to the Department of Health Regulations, and the milk must be pasteurized. The farmer can only collect the milk in the customer's container. The farmer cannot process the milk in any way. Sales of raw cream and raw butter are illegal.
3. The farmer must produce the milk "in accordance with the Department (of Public Health) rules and regulations. "The Department does not apply these rules and regulations, including the permit requirement, to farmers with just a few cows who sell raw milk only on the farm.
Update, 18 NOV 2004
An employee in the Illinois Department of Health told me of two additional conditions farms selling raw milk must comply with:
1. No advertising the sale of raw milk.
2. Customers must bring their own individual containers.
3. The customer MUST put the milk from your container into their container.
You can NOT sell or give away the milk in the containers you store it in because then you would be considered a bottling facility and subject to state regulations.
The state official also said that if the farmer has just a few cows and sells raw milk only on the farm not to pasteurization plants, not subject to inspection, etc., it is not necessary to comply with state regulations on the production of milk.

As I remember, you are something on the order of 400 X (400%) more likely to get some bacterial infection (cannot remember for sure which) drinking raw milk as opposed to drinking pasteurized milk. However, the likely hood of you getting the infection from pasteurized milk is something on the order of 1 to 10,000,000...so 400 times more likely means that the odds are 400 to 10,000,000 or 1 out of 25,000. Further, in most cases the infection is not very serious (stomach upset). I could have these numbers off by some. It was close to 25 years ago that I read about it.
This illustrates the power of statistics...A big headline: 400 times more likely to get XXX from YYYY!!! and people panic, scream for the legislature to do something to protect society from the dangers of YYY...never bothering to do some checking to find out that 400 times more likely to get a paper cut from paper made from wood as compared to vellum really doesn't matter all that much...

We drank raw milk for years back when we had a Jersey cow. I was super careful about cleanliness and clean hand technique, and we never got sick from it. We made butter from it, too. Mmmm.
Selling milk is illegal (at least in my state) unless you have a class A dairy (thousands of dollars of equipment), and you can't even give it away otherwise. It's because of all those thousands of people who got sick and died from raw milk... oh, wait... what people? I heard of one, about 30 years ago. Maybe there's a few more.
Let's lobby and vote to change the laws about our food!

Deermouse, The government discovered that everyone that drank raw milk in the year 1823 died! So there really is cause to worry, I am sure.
of course everyone who was alive in 1832 is dead.

The dairy where I buy our raw milk (and cream and cheese) is spotless. You can see where the cows are pastured and where they are milked (the area where they are milked has glass walls) and where the milk is bottled. It goes from the cow through a machine that super cools it to bottles to the giant refrigerated room. They milk twice a day and whatever you buy in the a.m. is from the previous afternoon's milking and if you buy in the p.m. it is from that morning's milking. Anything that is left over when the current milk is ready to shelve is either made into cheese or sold to a dairy company that pasteurizes it and sells it under their brand on store shelves.
They use plastic bottles now, but when they switched from glass to plastic my FIL got me one of the glass bottles as a keepsake.
The state dairy inspector buys his milk at the same dairy where I buy mine.
