A minister at Prestonwood Baptist Church faces a charge of online solicitation of a minor after police say he drove from Plano to Bryan to have sex with a 13-year-old girl.

The "girl" was a police officer pretending to be a teenager as part of an ongoing Internet sex sting. Joe Barron, one of about 40 ministers at the 26,000-member megachurch, could face up to 20 years in prison and a $10,000 fine for the second-degree felony.

Computer equipment was seized from Mr. Barron's home, and police said they were investigating evidence he had online conversations with more than a dozen girls.

Bryan authorities say the minister began crying Thursday morning as police arrested him. "He said he was feeling guilt and shame and grief," said Bryan police Officer Lesley Malinak, a Police Department spokeswoman.

He wasn't too guilt ridden to drive 200 miles, have a web cam and plenty of condoms in order to have sex with a 13 year old girl though. [:@]

I know a couple of guys on the local force here (they drop by work now and then) and they have said it usually is someone you wouldn't suspect...the creepy single guy down the street is not usually a perpertrator of these crimes.

That is true. Most are quite charming too.

The Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (SNAP) has in recent years expanded its focus, with attention to abuse by Baptist pastors.

"Baptist officials, we believe, need to compile a thorough, online database of proven, admitted and credibly accused pedophile clergy, so that kids can be protected and parents can be warned," said David Clohessy, SNAP national director.

A work group of the Southern Baptist Convention has been studying the feasibility of such a database and will make a report at the denomination's annual meeting, set for next month in Indianapolis.

Looks like this may be a problem NO church wants to admit to!!

SonInMe1 -> RE: Prestonwood Baptist minister arrested in sex sting (5/18/2008 9:45:45 AM)

Teachers and coaches are other groups pedaphiles use to further their sin. That doesn't mean all teachers and coaches are pedaphiles.

It just means we have to be careful who we let around our kids.

I attend prestonwood.

It was a very sad day at church yesterday....as we were all dealing with this issue.

Very true. It's not something a church is "proud of", that's for sure!

The church my wife "grew up" in (located in far south louisiana), had this sort of thing going on for years in varying ways and what have you....but, being a fairly small church, in an "out of the way" area, they had a unique way of keeping 'hush hush' about it....and, "sweeping it under the rug"....(as most people did back then with all sorts of things..all to keep up "good appearances")

However, with our church being who we are, it was inevitable that this would be fully covered by the media. The local media is ALWAYS there to report the "good" that we are doing for the community....so, it was their responsibility to report on this as well.

Our pastor did a great job at "responding" to this issue yesterday in church....To see his comments on it, from the pulpit...just go to our website....the link is right there on the home page.

Churches are great cover for all manner of criminal activity.

I think positions of authority often are; thus similar problems amongst teachers, politicians, corporate heads, etc.

True, but nobody is surprised that corporate leaders or politicians are criminals.

I wonder if the investigation will uncover a history where this was hushed up about. Part of the problem is the way that these leaders are given chance after chance after chance. This is an area where once you blow it then you must not be allowed back in a position to reoffend. It's as much for the perp as it is for the victims. Hiding sin never helped a person to overcome.

I am always suprised people are suprised church leaders are (particularly the way they are appointed in modern times); after all, what part of, "They come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves" isn't clear?

I seen that in the school district where I worked here in Mn.

It was like first offense- a meeting with a warning.

second offense-sent to a treatment place, district pays for it

third offense-moved out of school, tranferred to another school.

It's crazy. I think those that are pedophiles actually seek jobs like these.

What better way than to be the boss?

I don't know if you remember the account I gave of the guy who sent my son a letter, but he's charming and well liked by a lot of people around here. [8D]

The average sex offender has approx. 120 plus victims by the time he/she is prosecuted for a sex crime. This is esp. true when children are the victims..

It irks me so much that the church hides sin so often instead of coming straight forward and dealing with it like a man God has called.

It bothers me too about churches not dealing with sin. It's like they don't trust that God is able to honestly deal with and change people's lives.

Just as a bit of a "follow up"...

In yesterday's Dallas Morning News, there was an "Editorial" written by Editorial staff of the newspaper, commenting on this particular situation. It gives some insight on not only our church, but also on our Pastor.
(In the Sunday Dallas Morning News, there is a section called "Points". That's for Op-Ed pieces, letters to the editor, etc..etc..)....Each Sunday, 2-3 pieces are written by the "Editorial Board" to comment on something significant happening in our community....so, it's a "regular thing" to have these types of "columns" in the paper....just not usually about this kind of stuff)....

Here's the link

StephK -> RE: Prestonwood Baptist minister arrested in sex sting (5/27/2008 10:21:30 AM)

Thanks for the follow up. We need more leaders that are willing to deal with this and similar issues promptly and without excuse.

P31W -> RE: Prestonwood Baptist minister arrested in sex sting (5/27/2008 10:42:58 AM)

Hey Kerns I know how much you love your church. Remeber a Chruch is much more than just one man even if that man is the leader. I am praying that your church is able to deal with this in a way that glorifies God and builds up the body of Christ.

I am truly saddened about this situation. Sin in the church is something that saddens all Christians.

EDIT ADDED

I just read the update. Yes God is being glorified in the way your church is handling this matter. Let the healing and new growth begin!!!!

Well my wife is from far south Louisiana (Beau Bridge) and the way her realitives (Christians included) dealt with pedophiles was to feed them to the gators.

I think some of the old traditions should be revived.
