The volcano that has erupted in southern Chile for the first time in 9,000 years is causing a special problem for North Face Inc. founder Douglas Tompkins and his wife Kristine. They own it. The Chaiten volcano sits on the southern edge of Pumalin Park, a 300,000-hectare (740,000-acre) reserve that the Tompkinses have spent $50 million on in a bid to preserve a swath of Patagonian rain forest. Ash and rivers swollen by volcanic mud have ravaged land, trees and trails on a third of the park and threaten to obliterate 17 years of work, Kristine Tompkins said. ``It's a mess, a serious mess,'' she said in a May 13 phone interview from Pumalin's administration center at Puerto Varas, about 160 kilometers (100 miles) from the volcano. ``If it gets worse, it could hammer in a big way the infrastructure we've built, and wipe out forests that'll take thousands of years to return.'' ......... They blame the thing on global warming; if it wouldn't have been so hot the volcano wouldn't have erupted.

Since they own the area, should they be taxed for the CO2 the volcano is spewing into the atmosphere?

Agreed. This could be really good land for agriculture and with the food "shortages" in the world today. Have you been to Hawaii? Kona cofee is grown on the sides of sides of volcanoes. There are other crops but the coffee is to die for. [:D]

If it is good to produce coffee beans, I am sure that other crops would thrive in those environs. But think of all the furry crittters and birds that lost their lives in this environmental tragedy. If someone wants to buy the entire city of St. Louis- in what both sides believe is a mutually beneficial transaction- and turn it into a wildlife refuge, more power to them. I guess you could terrace all the way up the mountain (as is done in parts of Peru), but there's much easier ways of increasing arable land than that. Finally, of course, it's difficult to get machinery into the mountains. It's really no wonder that the farmers out there were losing livestock and not crops. You generally have livestock when the soil is too poor (too rocky or too much slope) to support grain crops. Oh well, at least 3100 square miles of farmers around the volcano have been spared in a way that they wouldn't have 20 years ago. What could have been an excuse for a shock to the world food markets instead will be absorbed by a nature reserve.

And his intentions was not to save lives, if any were saved, which woulld be good. Or we could ask how many people have died becasue food was not being grown there?

You are the one who brought that up so lets continue saving lives by you starting with supporting people with your money to have others move out of harms way where you think that is. I have been supporting conservancy efforts with my money- one great organization is The Nature Conservancy. They buy conservation easements and land from landowners who aren't interested in developing their land. But I think that anyone who wants to buy land for any reason should be allowed to. And I am simply saying that there are a whole lot of unnoticed benefits to keeping land in its natural state. Had there been more homes in the path of the volcano, things would have been much worse. This is a direct consequence of keeping land in its natural state. I'm not saying the government should spend a dime. I'm just saying that if someone wants to spend money to keep land in its natural state, that should be a good thing.

Most of the food grown on the side of the mountain, it appears, was just pasture for livestock. Growing meat- not grain- and doing so on the side of the mountain isn't going to feed a lot of people. Besides that, there's a lot of trees in the way. I mean, we could grow food in your backyard, too. That would probably be able to support more people than 20 acres of cows and alpacas chewing on grass in the Andes...
