Hmmmm....I think this is what I will do in the future.

Rather than pay AA $15 to destroy my luggage, have my belongings pawed through by security and stand on line waiting to see if my bags came on the same flight I did...

If you think $15 for a suitcase is a lot, wait until you try to send it via FedEx. You might be able to send one book cross-country for $15.

That may well be true, Dan, but here is what I am looking at.

My suitcase has been so damaged by the gentle handlers, that it never fails to attract the attention of Homeland Security. I guess they figure no one would put an explosive in a nice, new suitcase, or something. So all my careful packing--including sealing up liquid soap in ziplock bags--is for naught. Once I arrived in Seattle to find that the entire contents of my suitcase were covered in soap. They smelled nice, but they sure were a mess. ANd laundry in a hotel is not cheap *at all*.

(I was going to use part of the Stimulus check to get new luggage--but now I am not sure I should bother...)

Plus, the last leg of *every* trip ends from Atlanta or Charlotte to the local airport. The flight is *always* delayed. We call it the Lard--uh, the Fat Boy Flight, because for some reason nearly everyone on the flight is...chubbier that they would prefer to be. So the luggage almost always gets left behind. Granted, I would rather the passengers arrive safely than crash into the mountains from being overloaded, and granted that the airline *does* deliver the luggage within 48 hours, but it would still be worth good money to me to have it on my doorstep when I get there.

Plus, we have stock in FedEx. We do not have stock in AA

Here in Dallas/Fort worth, there is rarely any choice BUT to fly American.

I fly on business 6 or so times a year....it's the "default" choice when flying....and, can't remember a time when AA has lost my luggage (but, then my flights here from DFW are ALWAYS "direct".....very, very rarely do I ever have a "connection")....

If Iam gone for 2 nights, I can get by with my "carryon" luggage.....more than that, and, I have to move to a larger suitcase that I have to "check in"....

Some details on the "luggage fee"....that haven't been mentioned yet:

From AA's website, the following customers will NOT be charged the "service fee" (which does exempt ALOT of people)....

* For the first checked bag, customers who buy a ticket before June 15, 2008, or who fly before June 15, 2008
* For the second checked bag, customers who purchased a ticket before May 12, 2008
* Customers originating travel in the U.S., U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico or Canada and traveling to an international destination beyond the U.S., U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico or Canada
* Customers originating travel outside the U.S., U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico or Canada and traveling to an international destination
* Customers who purchase full-fare tickets in Economy Class
* Customers who purchase Business or First Class tickets
* Customers flying on AA codeshare flights not operated by American Airlines, American Eagle or AmericanConnection®
* Customers traveling on government or military fares
* Military passengers on active duty
* AAdvantage Executive Platinum®, AAdvantage Platinum® or AAdvantage Gold® members
* oneworld Alliance Emerald, Sapphire or Ruby members
* Customers flying on the same reservation as an AAdvantage Executive Platinum, AAdvantage Platinum or AAdvantage Gold member or oneworld Alliance Emerald, Sapphire or Ruby member regardless of frequent flier status or fare type (not applicable to group bookings)
* AAnytime® Economy Class AAdvantage award tickets, MileSAAver(SM) or AAnytime First and Business Class AAdvantage award tickets
* First and Business Class upgrades confirmed prior to check in
* AAirpass travel

I'm not sure about the other airlines, but United has implemented a similar (although less drastic) policy: the first checked baggage is free; the 2nd one is $25.

That's what Iam not sure of, and wondered....no idea of what that ratio would be (those excluded from paying the "fee" vs. those who will pay a fee)...based on the number of people who will fall into the categories of "excluded" in my post above.....

has anyone seen any facts regarding the numbers actually affected by this?

Some people already do that for overseas flights.

On a related note, US Airways is no longer gonna offer peanuts on economy flights.

I'm pretty sure no one offers peanuts anymore anyway (allergies, ya know).

True, but they are ridding themselves of snacks. Not sure if they are doing the same with drinks or not.

Even my favorite airline is adding a surcharge on luggage now as well.

I think it is those little bags with four pretzel squares in it that htey are getting rid of.

I am not at all surprised--I frequently worried that such a generous gift would break them eventually.

(I wonder if Air France will still give you free wine and bread? It was good wine, too.)

When I worked for UPS, we had a lot of customers doing that.

I obviously can't say which airline I work for etc... but one example is let's say I have a flight ready to depart a certain city..not a hub airport, but one that does get some traffic, say like Sioux Falls (which we don't serve, so I'll use it) and some bad thunderstorms develop on the route of flight that departs in 10 minutes or so.
Now this is the afternoon push which has 3 or 4 flights all at once, and none till the overnighters come in at 8 to9 pm or so.
Airlines have been cutting staff terribly to save money, so all 4 agents are outdoors working the airplanes and hustling (for peanuts btw....don't get me started on execs who get bonuses while pensions are cut and airlines are run into bankruptcy) and nobody is watching the phones when I'm phoning to tell them to take on more fuel to weave around the storms, holding etc.....I can phone the local control tower, but it isn't their job to be a go between for the flight and the company (me) and they have no info on the weather 400 miles away. Thats happened more than a few times and for worse things too....
We need the reregulation to enforce safety not so much cut down the number of airlines. I can guarantee you if we had only 3 arilines in this country starting today, one would be in Chapter 11 in two years.
If the consumer demands 199 bucks coast to coast, they will get a very poor product.

Being a pilot myself I doubt the validity of your comments with regards to fuel quantity and enroute weather for a particular flight. As for re-regulation and safety. It is obvious to even the casual flyer that todays airlines are safer , thanks to the FAA, than they have been in years.

The Airline Pilot's Union has been behind promoting most of the safety improvements in the last few decades. I can't say the same for corporate managements.

Been in the airline biz 20 years now...aviation itself 30...I feel we need reregulation in the industry. I come at that from a safety standpoint.

Yeah, we can thank Saint Ronald on this one. There are too many airlines flying too many of the same routes and they all lose money and stay behind schedule. The FAA could borrow some ideas from the FCC and limit some of the overlaps so that planes would be used more efficiently. Doesn't mean prices will be cheaper, but it might stabilize the few airlines that can survive and make flying a bit more predictable.

I am confused. Saint Ronald fired the striking air traffic controllers. What does this have to do with reregulation? Jimmy Carter signed the Airline Deregulation Act, which saw an increase in viable routes and a decrease in prices. From what I recall of that time period, tickets were outrageous and the Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB) did a lousy job. Do you want to return to this system or do you have somehting else in mind? IIRC, one of the CAB's jobs was to develop efficient routes and that didn't really happen. Why do you think it would be better now?

The Air pilots strike and regulation is apples and oranges. Don't get me started on that one now.

Well, 30 years in in aviation, over 18 in the airlines doing what I do. What I said about fuel stands. It was really more about staffing at stations as an example of what the industry has become because of cutting back on costs.
Of course I have to please my company and the FAA in my job. I think the FAA does a good job. My argument is cost cutting when it impacts safety.

Very true....Flight attendant and mechanic unions too!
Some airline management couldn't run a dixie cup dispenser, course, I'm in a bad mood tonight.

I'll concede your greater detail on the industry. However, it is evident that the airline industry cannot police itself. The government can do some of the things that the FCC does with communications. Not perfect by a long shot, but worth looking into.
