Should the U.S. loosen its economic embargo on Cuba? Why or why not?

todd_t -> RE: Should the U.S. loosen its economic embargo on Cuba? (5/21/2008 7:53:16 PM)

IMO, sticking to the Cuban embargo so fiercely based on the country's poor human rights record is absurd considering the US does business in the hundreds of billions in another country with a far worse record on human rights in China - a nation we also are in serious financial debt to.

Yes.

mapachito13 -> RE: Should the U.S. loosen its economic embargo on Cuba? (5/21/2008 8:26:27 PM)

Yes. Then we can flood their shores with our products and turn them into materialistic hedonists like the rest of us. Besides I know a lot of car collectors who would pay top dollar for some of those 50's vintage cars.

Yeah, I need a new sunny place to do all-inclusive vacationing in! [;)]

The embargo has no purpose now. The US is just too proud to admit it didn't work. I say Let 'er rip.

It needs to be looked at certainly. But I get scared when I think of "american intervention"

We got Hamas elected in Israel with our democracy.

We got Gitmo there why not, I guess would be my question?

We have granted China "most favored nation" trading status. So why not? ?

wing2000 -> RE: Should the U.S. loosen its economic embargo on Cuba? (5/22/2008 1:01:05 AM)

The US should have opened trade twenty years ago.....Fidel's revolution would have been gone in a few years.

It won't happen this year though...Republicans and Democrats are still afraid of the Cuban political machine in south Florida...(though that machine doesn't have the power it once did).

Well, actually I think that would be the best reason to not do so.

Yes it is way overdue.

Amen. I've never understood that one.

Because the esteemed Senator from CA, Frankenfeinstein, (thanks cow451 for that one, all CA is in your debt) whose husband was raking in 100's of millions of dollars from his company's Chinese connections helped push that through and big business was drooling over the cheap labor to be had over there.

I have heard that in 5-10 years Boeing will be moving their airline assembly operations there. I guess they indured one too many machinists' strikes. I know firsthand that parts that go into our fighter jets are being manufactured there already. That's right our national defense is being farmed out to a foreign country!!!

There are literally thousands of electronic components that are only manufactured in China, including the vast majority of integrated circuits, so this is unavoidable.

Lots of ammunition used by US forces is made in China. We could'nt fight a war without our friends, the Chinese. Another reason to stop the embargo is to free up some of those good Cuban cigars.

I think you rather answered your own question here:

And of course their use of slave labor is troubling.

We could at least keep our "farmed out" labor in the western hemisphere.

I say drop the embargo.

What about those people thrown in prison in Cuba and never given a trial or chance to defend themselves against ............. oh, wait.... that's Gitmo. Nevermind. [:o]

Obama weighs in at the annual Cuban Independence Day banquet of the Cuban American National Foundation:

"It's time for more than tough talk that never yields results. It's time for a new strategy. There are no better ambassadors for freedom than Cuban Americans," he said, noting the prospects for influencing Cuba's political course by engagement and example.

.....

Obama said he would immediately end the restrictions limiting Cuban Americans to visiting family on the island to once every three years, without exceptions, and the prohibition against sending money to anyone but immediate family. Since the Bush administration tightened sanctions against Cuba in 2004, remittances have been limited to $100 a month and only to parents, siblings and children.

"I will maintain the embargo. It provides us with the leverage to present the regime with a clear choice: If you take significant steps toward democracy, beginning with the freeing of all political prisoners, we will take steps to begin normalizing relations," Obama said.

I believe little, if any, small-arms ammo comes from China. ATK is the largest provider and there are some other pretty big companies. I wish there were some more sources, as ammo prices have gone way up. I used to be able to get a case of 5.56 mm for around $200. Those days are long gone.

I stand corrected. I revisited the articles I had seen and it is Chinese ammunition being supplied to the Iraqi insurgents and Taliban coming from China, probably through Iran. China owns a great deal of the US debt, thereby we are actually funding both sides in a way.

The fact that we seemingly don't care enough about human rights in China isn't an argument for caring less about them in Cuba, but for doing more about them in China. We should be consistent in doing right things.

That said, the embargo clearly isn't doing much good at the moment. There's a long way between embargo and favoured nation status.
