ORIGINAL: jkdjr25 Just a quick notation about the Mermaid Forest story. I have all four volumes of the Mermaid Saga manga and while there's no real finale, there's not meant to be. Errrrr...ok. I guess those of us who watch anime just get spoiled because most series do actually have a beginning, middle, and some kind of ending, even if it's open-ended enough to allow for a sequel.

jesus of montreal. wow. i saw it for the first time almost 20 years ago while still in university - i was still a pleasant pothead pagan then - and left the theatre stunned. saw it again tonight (i think it was the 4th time) and again, i was stunned. more than ever i recognized all the parallels - they were creatively re-contextualized and the impact of the things jesus said and the things he went through was made very palpable. while it is a film that questions the historical record of jesus, the way jesus (or at least the idea of jesus) changes the characters is very interesting to watch. so many layers...and ultimately, it is a movie that affirms the Truth of christ. highly recommended as an "alternative" easter movie - 4.5/5

tristram shandy: a ____ & bull story. i figured the title might get edited. anyway. what fun! brilliant [non]adaptation of the book. made me want to go re-read it. a movie about a book about digressions that never really gets started or completed. it reveals and acknowledges and celebrates and embraces artifice and costume and ego. it is funny and serious, about art imitating life and life imitating art and the relationship between them and the lack thereof. it's a dizzying dance of a movie, all po-mo and meta and classical and contemporary and period piece and simply a delight. 4.5/ 5.

Horton Hears a Who~I really missed the rhyming. And Carol Burnett's character was a 1-note villain. Other than that it was OK. I'd make it a rental though if I could do it over. Into the Wild~I've read the Krakauer book before so none of it was new (although some of it was moved around a bit or made more heart-warming). Hal Holbrook was great. Main character (Emile something) was good. The sister voice-overs were awkward. The parents (John Hurt, Marcia Gay Harden) were wasted. Penn overused Slo-mo photography and just plain needed to do some editing. All in all it was a decent movie and I'd recommend it to wannabe Thoreaus or back to nature folks but others might find it a bit tedious. In general it glorifies McCandless into a wandering idealist, another John Muir, when the reality is a bit more complex.

Finally managed to finish Witch Hunter Robin. Didn't really have much of a chance to watch lately but anyway. It was good. I generally prefer something a bit more stylized but it kept you interested and the twists and stuff were pretty good. Anyway, started Chrono Crusade. I've only watched the first disc so far but I really like this one.... Fast paced too which I like. Keeps things moving right from the start. It's a tiny bit predictable though. I have a good idea of how this is gonna end and I really didn't know anything about this before hand.

Had a chance to see Goodfellas, at least the pruned version on Lifetime. Personally, I think the movie made me hankering for some Italian food!

Appleseed Ex Machina (onDemand) and the second DVD of Blood+. Although the Appleseed Ex Machina DVD likely has two language tracks, the onDemand version is Japanese with English subtitles (they also show the English cast in the end credits). I would have wanted to watch this twice, once in Japanese with the subtitles, and once in English. I'm not sure I thought the visuals were as interesting as the previous Appleseed film, but there was more character development. Still enjoying Blood+...maybe "enjoy" is not the right term, since sad things happen. Maybe it's more accurate to say that I'm engrossed in the storyline?

An Empress And The Warriors. A Hong Honk epic movie about a young woman who is forced to take on the role of monarch to avoid a civil war when her father dies suddenly.
