I'm still catching up on the films from 2007.

The Kite Runner.
Absolutely beautiful. Great great story. I wept a bit.

I watched 2 movies the other night. We are Marshall--wasn't quite what I expected, but pretty good overall. Two Soldiers--a short movie based on a William Faulkner short story. I liked it. Shortly into it, I thought I had the story predicted, but it took an unexpected turn, making it much more enjoyable.

88 minutes and Expelled. both are great movies.

Have you ever seen Saikano? It has got to be the most heartwrenching anime series I have ever seen. I couldn't watch it a second time. It's very well done, but...dismal.

True it was quite a depressing anime with a tragic love story but I felt it was a bit overkill. Air wasn't depressing but honestly I think it was way more successful at the end pulling on those heartstrings. It was so much more innocent. I don't get very emotional in movies, let alone cartoons but that last episode was just cruel. And overall I felt it was better telling its story than Saikano which focused too much on the characters emotions IMO. And I didn't like the art [:D] So that didn't help. Air was hands down the most beautifully animated series I've seen.

Juno- I'm not sure if I'll be calm like Juno's parents but I can relate with the Jennifer Gardner's character being an adopted Mom.
American Gangsters- great acting. A bit too long though.

"Tyler Perry's Why Did We Get Married" Good story about the lives of 4 married couples, struggling to make it work for different reasons. Some characters seems a bit overly exhagerated almost to the point of obnoxiousness ( I know that was the point but I almost couldn't finish watching it ) Good movie tho, nice ending, about what you would expect but Guys... Watch it with your wives.

-"Letters from Iwo Jima" another good story, not one to sit down with your wife unless she is a military/war movie buff. I still enjoyed the movie. Rigors of war are sometimes tough to watch. Well balanced, view of both the Japanese side and the American side of things.

-"I Am Legend" I know I am a little behind the times on this one, I have 4 kids so I wasn't sure but I finally watched it and again, not bad, not great, nothing memorable, but overall not bad.

Hmm..I might check it out

Dan in Real Life.

Very enjoyable film. And a side of Steve Cannel I haven't seen before.

My husband's family is much like the extended family in the movie - all getting together in a house on a lake, the single guy (widower in Dan's case) gets the laundry room to sleep in, all the little games and rituals (in the movie they divide into guys and girls and have a "crossword puzzle race" ).

My husband has been looking for a movie for a guy's movie night...would this one fit?

I don't know. Usually when my dad does guy's movie night it's war films! My husband doesn't do guy's movie night.

This is more of a "family film" in the sense of some of Woody Allen's more comedic films about families, or like Parenthood. It's mostly about the main character's life as a widowed father of three girls, and about the extended family, and about his relationship with a woman he meets (to tell you more would spoil it). Since it's about relationships, I'd say it would likely appeal more to women (at least stereotypically).

doinkdom -> RE: I Just Saw... (4/23/2008 2:54:21 PM)

They apparantly have watched all the action/adventure films that don't have the stereotypical topless this and bottomless that going on as well.

He said they've also seen everything conceivable be blown up.[:D]

He's not into sports, so I think he was just looking for an alternative to a sports movie, but this one definitely does not sound like it.

thanks

'love this movie and decided to buy the DVD. The soundtrack is also great and my son found the singer who sang most of the songs in the movie Sondre Lerche...great songs.

My niece received a sneak peek of Moondance Alexander (I think that it came out some time ago) and just now being released on DVD and it was good.

Don Johnson and Sasha Cohen are in it and it has alot of scenes that can be used for good. My niece is going to be in high school next year and since she is sensitive, I (and my sister) worry about her and peer pressure and the quest for popularity. This movie gave us some opportunites to discuss why being popular is not always the most important thing.

Good flick.

The first five parts of 'Band of Brothers' and the first two episodes of 'The Forsaken Promise' (a documentary about the Balfour Declaration and the impact the English decision not to uphold it had on Jews during WWII).

I just bought "The Water Horse." It was suggested on my christian radio station as a family friendly movie. It is rated PG. My kids loved it (5 yrs and 15mo) and my little brother (12) asked to watch it over and over when he stayed the night. I highly recommend it.

Akira... animation was awesome. I couldn't believe how old it was. I couldn't tell if it was cell shaded and done with computers or if it was all hand drawn. I didn't think they started doing stuff with computers quite yet when this was made. But anyway, I thought the animation was fantastic. That must have taken ages to do. I mean, it was better than anything Disney had done up untill then IMO. The city backgrounds and lights and all that was quite awesome too. Character designs weren't all that interesting though and a couple of the characters looked too similar it was hard to figure out who was who. But anyway, pretty good movie, awesome animation.

No Reservations

Fairly well done chick-flick. And that's not supposed to be a chef pun.

Disturbia. True, there are some..."disagreeable" parts in the movies and you would all say, but it was an awesome movie. Shia LeBeouff is one of my favorite actors. Can't wait for the Indiana Jones movie! :) :) :)

jodavi -> RE: I Just Saw... (4/28/2008 11:20:17 AM)

Cloverfield- I did not want to see the movie because after watching Blair Witch Project years ago --- I was worried about motion sickness but I was surprised that it was turned out to be just fine and ended up liking it.

Cloverfield...didn't like it but my younger nephew liked it....too shaky (camera) for me....I got dizzy...

Juno

I don't know if it lived up to the hype but it was a sweet slice-of-life film. I felt like Juno was a little too mature for a 16 yo going through what she did. Her stepmom was a great character, what a "momma-bear"!

henny -> RE: I Just Saw... (5/2/2008 7:53:43 PM)

Iron Man -It's a good popcorn flick that gets the summer season off to a good start. The best thing about it was probably Downey, as I think it was genius casting. Otherwise the special effects are great, and while it's not the best superhero film ever, it's definitely well above average. I imagine they could make a great sequel out of it.

aslouie -> RE: I Just Saw... (5/2/2008 8:26:10 PM)

Black Book (Zwartboek)

I have to say that I'm very impressed with Paul Verhoeven's take on WWII Netherlands, especially with depicting how convoluted the whole Dutch Resistance-vs.-Nazis dynamic is, with factions within either party looking out for their own vested interests--even long after VE-Day is declared. Overall, I think it feels like vintage WWII thriller (think Orson Welles' The Third Man), classic Alfred Hitchcock, sexed up and amped war violence, just for *ahem* "contemporary" film tastes.

Still, I think it's rather a fair and balanced approach to how Verhoeven depicts the Calvinist Christian community during those days, from the opening, hiding place scenes (not exactly like the Corrie Ten Boom kind), all the way to how the director depicts the deeply religious Resistance fighter, Theo: and that's before I get into the flash-forward scenes in Suez Crisis-era Israel. If anyone were to be pistol-whipped into watching ANY Verhoeven movie, may this be the more desirable of the options--as opposed to his foray into Hollywood fare (Total Recall or Showgirls, anyone?[8D]).
