Saw THE ASSISINATION OF RICHARD NIXON last night. It's based on the true story of a man who hi-jacked a plane in Baltimore. It's across between DEATH OF A SALESMAN and TAXI DRIVER. It's a very good performance by Sean Penn, who I usually don't care for. It's basically about a man who finds everything going wrong in his life. He does a slow burn into insanity. Difficult and depressing film that is well made. This film was released in December to qualify for the Oscars, but got lost in the midst of of big Oscar fare. Difficult and depressing movies can be good, and I recommend it highly. I doubt many will like it because of it's heavy subject matter. Not a "feel-good movie". I give it **** out of *****. That's high coming from me.

It's half lion, half tiger...I was actually disappointed when I finally saw it, but it like...stuck in my head, and I watched it over and over...one of the most quotable movies ever. And their marketing was genius. I watched Tae...Guk....well, Brotherhood of War. It's a Korean movie, about two brothers during the Korean War. I'm a sucker for modern war movies (as opposed to those made right after WWII, the classics with the Duke and whatnot), I was a total Band of Brothers addict. I got it via Netflix, and would be up till the wee hours, unable to stop watching. Brotherhood of War, though, was entirely TOO sweeping and grand. Nearly 3 hours long. Prerequisite classical score (I would have liked some Korean music - when I commented on that, my friend I watched it with, who was stationed in Korea several years ago, cried, "NOOOOO! No you don't!") Too many climactic scenes, by the end you're like, oh, look, more screaming and heroism and love and stuff. When it started I said, "Man, this movie is going to make me cry!" But, it didn't. I recognized the scenes that were the tear-jerkers, but it was just a bit much...excellent performances. Though I had no idea Korean was such an odd language. It is, however, the most graphic movie I believe I have ever seen. At one point I actually said, out loud, "My soul cannot take this much carnage." But, that's war. One of my pet peeves about most war movies is how...they glaze over the trauma. This movie does not. In addition to the over-all battle scenes, with hand-to-hand combat (I abhore physical violence), it has all the trappings of war, limbs flying, heads popping, maggots and brains and............I've always complained that war movies, or any movie where say, someone gets shot, doesn't realistically portray what happens. This one did, and I'm glad for it on the one hand, but after a while I really couldn't take it anymore. It also made me realize how very little I know about the Korean War, which I plan to remedy.

Bridget Jones, the Edge of Reason Why, oh why? While it was funny in some parts, I don't think I would want to watch it again. I thought that Renee Z. looked way too chubby - much more than in the first film. It was distracting. The character of Mark Darcy was just not loveable in this film. Not worth the price of a rental - thank goodness we saw it for free.

I just saw...Beyond Borders. It was a really good movie, sad though. There were affairs and some bad language. But overall, I enjoyed it....actually got me thinking about doing missions work in the future

"I thought that Renee Z. looked way too chubby - much more than in the first film." ...too chubby for the character? Because she's hardly chubby for a woman, in either film.

No, just too chubby - not so much her body, but in her face! She totally gained all the weight in her face - very weird.

...National Treasure... While to me it didn't really stand out, it's an enjoyable adventure tale with no really obejectionable parts (although maybe any conspiracy theories concerning the Templar Knights should be officially banned after Da Vinci Code). At times it seemed like a travelogue of urban east coast historical and tourist sites (Washington, Philladelphia, NYC, and briefly Boston). I'm impresed that they went for the PG rating (there's enough action/violence that it would have been impossible to get a G, but they did the next best thing). Suitable for older elementary kids and up. Anyone younger would likely lose interest. Phantom of the Opera is on the way from Blockbuster Online...

Lately I've been on a early 80's retro horror movie trend (with Scanners & the Brood). Last night I watched Dead & Buried from 1981. While it's a very cheesy B-rated movie, it had some grisly makeup effects.

ORIGINAL: stateofgrace House of Flying Daggers is a very cool film, isn't it sadiebelle? It was entertaining in the film-style of just being very visually stimulating and it was also very emotional in it's story telling with the politics as a backdrop for the romance. It was beautiful.

You ought to see Kung Fu Hustle. It's not a cinema masterpiece, but it's fun to watch.

I just got back from seeing Hitchhiker's again...even though I know I really should read the book, I don't want to for fear it will "ruin" the movie for me, like some say it will. ::shrug:: I also saw Hitch for the first time a few days ago...I obviously waited quite some time before going to the theatre for this one. But, though way too cliched at points, it was quite funny in others.

I saw H2G2 tonight, it was OK, but I didn't think it had an entirely coherent storyline. The casting was pretty good, the actor who played Arthur Dent was spot on, Trillian was pretty good though not as good as I thought she would be when I heard she was cast, and while I was rather worried about Mos Def as Ford Prefect, he did a good job. On a technical note, it was pretty distracting because in some scenes Marvin looked a lot bigger than he did in other scenes, it seems like they could have done a better job that that (and, "brain the size of a planet" does not mean that you look like a bowling ball with legs).

Saw PHANTOM OF THE OPERA last night and zzzzzzz. I'm sorry. I fell asleep writing this post, just like I did when watching this movie. Is it me or did they keep singing the same song over and over again? I hate it when they sing the dialouge. Bursting into song is okay because it's a musical, but singing then speaking about every other line was getting on my nerves. And the story went nowhere. Very slow. Guess that's why I fell asleep. Out of *****, I give it **.

I just watched Blade Trinity yesterday and ocean's 12 the day before. Both were good, though I passed out at the end of Ocean's 12 and missed everything after the deal between ocean and the night fox. I've seen previous 2 blades so I had to see this one. It was good imo. There is a part that sticks out in my mind. There was a vampire wearing a cross. The head vampire asked her why she wears it. She said she was a catholic girl before she turned. He said "I was there when he was crucified, he died for their sins (meaning humans) not mine." I just thought that part was kind of neat. I give: Ocean's 12: **** (can't really rate it truthfully because I missed the entire ending) Blade Trinity: **** (Good camera effects and graphics. Ok story plot. It's bloody and has bad and vulgar language. I laughed alot because Ryan Reynolds was soo funny in this movie and added a nice contrast with Wesley Snipe's serious character.)

I went to see Kung Fu Hustle last night--it was a bit of a let-down. It was rather funny in the beginning, but quickly progressed into being uninspired & almost stupid [I know they were making a parody, but it's important to make it humorous & not just allow the action to carry the movie] The 'fight' scenes were too long; my friend actually fell asleep at some point during the movie, I was very close to it; some parts in the fight scenes were well done, though.

I just saw "Being John Malkovich". I really like different movies and this one was definetly different. I really liked it. While watching it I was reminded a little bit of another movie that I love 'Adaptation" and was not surprised at the end of Malkovich that one of the writers was Charlie Kaufman (same as Adaptation). I you like something out of the ordinary I would suggest this movie.

Saw Kingdom of Heaven [technically, since it's early morning] last night--it was pretty good. It seems to be historically correct overall & certainly represents the inclinations of fallen man. I liked how they portrayed that a corrupt leader in power brought inevitable destruction; also, there was one line that was the best in the movie [was said intially from a father to a son] but the movie's so new, I can't find it in whole form, but one of the sentences from it is [loosely] 'Always tell the truth, even if it leads to your death' & it was extraordinarily Christian-based [sure, the movie's focused upon the fight for Jerusalem, but you'd expect quite a bit of distortion with movie-making & all] The film was aesthetically well-done as well, with beautiful scenery & tremendous attention to detail. I'm still unsure if I favor Ridley Scott's use of slow-motion; he does it right twice in the movie, but the other times are questionable [he did the same in Hannibal] Another relation to Hannibal was the use of part of music; it was actually used twice in Hannibal & was used again in Kingdom of Heaven which bothered me, but not as much as the fact that it didn't seem to even fit the scene in the movie. Rather good acting. The inclusion of a 'relationship' in the movie was necessary because of the plot, but it could have been done better, without so much focus on the physical aspect, but again, that's secular movie-making for you. Battle scenes were terrific, but more questionable use of the slow-motion effect. Blood spurts looked realistic [har]

"I saw H2G2 tonight, it was OK," Yeah, I'm telling people if you like the book, you'll like the movie, or if you like sci-fi, you'll like the movie, otherwise, you prob won't like it. "but I didn't think it had an entirely coherent storyline." And I thought it was actually kinda boring - but there was enough cool stuff to look at to make up for it. "The casting was pretty good, the actor who played Arthur Dent was spot on, Trillian was pretty good" MARTIN FREEMAN!!! He's actually how I found out they were making the movie, as he's in The Office, which I love. "though not as good as I thought she would be when I heard she was cast," All I've seen her in is All the Real Girls, a spectacular movie I cannot recommend enough. She just looks kinda surprised - and a bit young for him. "and while I was rather worried about Mos Def as Ford Prefect, he did a good job." I love Mos Def, on stage, on stereo and on screen. I rather thought he was the highlight of the movie. Zaphod's accent got on my nerves, entirely too "Dubya." "On a technical note, it was pretty distracting because in some scenes Marvin looked a lot bigger than he did in other scenes, it seems like they could have done a better job that that (and, "brain the size of a planet" does not mean that you look like a bowling ball with legs)." Cutest robot EVER! I thought he fit right in with the sort of...Buck Rogers cheesiness of the production value. And the opening sequence is awesome! Overall, we liked it alot.

This weekend I watched the original Japanese version of Shall We Dance? Ok, everyone who told me it was better than the Richard Gere version - I think you were wrong. It was sweet, it was funny, but it wasn't better. We also just watched National Treasure. A clean family film full of adventure. I of course could not stop saying, "Hey, there's Boromir!"

I watched The Manchurian Candidate with Denzel Washington. It wasn't that great, the story really never got off the ground and the suspense was lacking. I hear the original is better.

Last night I watched The Saddest Music in the World - if you're familiar with Guy Maddin, you'll know whether or not you'd like it. Interesting story, a beer heiress during the Great Depression stages a world contest, which country has the saddest music in the world. Interesting stylistically, but overall, as a...cohesive plot-line/story....I recommend it if you're into movies, period. But if you prefer typical Hollywood fare, you prob. wouldn't enjoy/appreciate it.
