Yep - all depends on what you need it for. I run Adobe CS3, and I need that more-stable foundation to run it on. You might try loading Leopard onto your system as well. I've never tried it, but I hear that it works. Being familiar with both, I suppose there's a reason that you aren't going that way already though?

ORIGINAL: Locke I run Adobe CS3, and I need that more-stable foundation to run it on. Yes... Stability... Not something I'd be bragging about regarding Adobe CS3 on a Mac at the moment: Adobe users claim file corruption after 10.5.3 update quote:
Users of Adobe’s Creative Suite 3 software are complaining that files saved to network volumes are being corrupted, and have linked the problem to their recent update to Mac OS X 10.5.3 “Leopard.” Adobe users posting to Apple’s discussion boards indicate that files saved from Photoshop and InDesign over the network then can’t be opened. Some users indicate that downgrading to Mac OS X 10.5.2 fixes the issue. Others suggest using “Save As” to save a copy of a file instead of “Save” to remedy the issue. Yeah, those reliable Mac updates, never break anything. Keep in mind that I found this link at a webcomic I read called Applegeeks. The author is a rabid Mac fan, who has been getting file corruption from this very issue. Of course, you did say "more-stable", so I'll give you credit for that. Windows does have more stability issues than any other OS. However, I don't find it very impressive that Macs are as stable as they are, they don't support as many different hardware and software configurations as Windows does.

There has been a rash of capacitor failures in certain types of machines in recent years, manufactured in a specific timeline. We have so many customers complain about Vista, and they want us to switch back to XP.

Ah, interesting - but Photoshop isn't all I need... Ai, iD, DW... yep, I use 'em all. Is there a Vine-like program free for Macs? I would love one.

As JonCo mentioned there are open source equivalents to much of the CS3 suite, however, if you're a professional user of that suite you likely won't be too impressed. Also if you're a pro user running it under Wine probably isn't the best idea. If that's you, just stick with a Mac, for now. As for the open source parts ... GIMP, an image editor. Is pretty powerful, but some people gripe about the interface (though there are projects to fix that). I think it's most limiting technical problem is that it doesn't support the CYMK color model, last time I checked. But I think there is work towards that end as well. Alternatively, Krita in the KDE KOffice is catching up to GIMP and IIRC it even has CYMK. Scribus for desktop publishing. I used it for prayer letters when I was a missionary. I had few complaints. It does support CYMK. Inkscape, a vector image editor like Illustrator. Uses SVG as its native format. Can do a lot of cool stuff. Cinelerra for video editing. It is actually pretty powerful. There have been complaints about stability but it has worked well for me lately. It takes some doing to learn it, but there are some good guides online. Spend a day or two and you'll get the hang of it. Web development --- kwrite is all you need. All web dev suites, including Adobe's, are steaming piles of elephant dung if you ask me.

Yeah - i use CS3 professionally - i use CMYK more than print nowadays. I may check out Cinelerra though... I don't have anything for that. Thanks!

Hi Locke, as you know I use Linux. PCLinuxOS is installed as the main OS because of it's stability. Cinelerra is available in the PCLinuxOS repositories. Have fun. Jon

Speaking about Cinelerra here is an interest link about Linux at the movies. http://www.linuxmovies.org/ While you there don't forget click on the software for a complete listing of both commercial and free software that is available. It is impressive.
