A friend's mom, whom I also knew and liked, passed away today. She was a believer.

Beginning tomorrow, Brandon is going to be a swim class aide. How would you record this as school? He will have a swim (PE) credit...I could put the hours under that but I don't think he needs them there.

Swimming lessons don't just teach PE, but it usually goes hand in hand with water safety which is health.

Right, but this isn't taking lessons, this is helping the teacher. They do things like model strokes, catch kids, do hands-on helping.

When I am having a hard time cateragizing what they are doing, I go back to the beginning.

Why did you think that this would be a good opportunity for him?

What were you hoping that he would get from this experience?

What has he surprised you with from this experience?

Where do you think that the things he learned can lead to, and where else can they be used?

Those questions help me a lot. If I am still having trouble I get on here and ramble off some of my thoughts concerning those questions and wait for you guys to tell me where I can list that stuff in hsing. LOL!

Work/study? Not a clue. Will have a similar issue this fall when ds1 will most likely be working at the bike shop.

No, but at a certain point it gets ridiculous. I mean, Brandon spends 5 hours a week in Karate and for 8 weeks each summer he spends 7 to 10 hours in swim, and then there's all the 'other' stuff that he does. High schools here require 2 credits of PE and he will have....about six, just in martial arts and swim alone.

Nate 'fixed' the A/C!!! It wasn't actually broken...the vents were shut. He noticed it this morning and now my house is nicely frigid!

I was supposed to sing today but it was postponed, which is a good thing, since my pianist's mom died yesterday (see earlier post). So we will also not be singing next Sunday.

Jennifer--yah, I'm in the same boat with ds1. If I counted all the time he spends training and racing, he'd have all four years of high school covered in one quarter!

An elective leadership class.

I'm sorry for the loss of your friend, Jennifer.

Congratulations, Sarah.

I had thought about Leadership, but am somewhat confused as to what 'leadership' is...as a class, that is. You see, at the school up the street, 'leadership' students can vote other students out of 'leadership' class, and their grade is based on how much money they raise, and for a certain amount of money they can actually skip several class sessions with no effect on their grade. So it appears to me that 'leadership' class is simply training in dirty politics.

DS thinks he is starving and is quite mad at me right now:

Breakfast: he decided he didn't like anything I had so he just ate some crackers.
Lunch: 5th sunday lunch at church: pulled pork sandwhich and a piece or what appeared to be rather rich chocolate cake
Dinner: it was just the 2 of us since the girls were at youth group. He ate a box of bagel bites, and had a brownie. When we picked up the girls he had some doritos and when we got home he had a gogurt.

Now that's not a ton of food for today but he swears he will be dead by morning if I don't feed him more.

Maybe at their school, but not at yours. You have a different standard and that's perfectly fine.

Zoebob, Give him some cheese and he'll be fine.

You can make your leadership credit be anything you want it to, Jen. You know that.

Zoebob, that's not much food...I think Levi eats that much! LOL Hannah *always* has to have a snack right before bed...usually yogurt or fruit and cheese. Feed the boy! LOL

well, he's upstairs now. I'm not going to remind him he's starving if he's being quiet up there now.

LOL...true. I wouldn't either.

I used to think Hannah was just saying she was hungry to put off bedtime, but since realized that she really is hungry, even if she ate a good dinner.

I have never tried to emulate the PSs. However, my limited knowledge of what leadership is combined with what I have seen in their class leaves me lost as to a true definition.

Well, it's not like I kept foor from him when he asked for it. The gogurt was after we got home with the girls, half an hour past bed time.

He was fine all day and not hungry. It's just that now it's bedtime and he thinks he's going to die. He did get the yogurt right before I tucked him in. In fact, I think he ate it on the way upstairs because I saw the empty tube in the bathroom trashcan.

If I told him he could sit and play video games instead of going to bed he probably wouldnt say he was hungry.

ETA: Since he did just have the yogurt I know he's not going to die. I told him that if he was really that close to starving to death he wouldn't have the energy to complain about it.
He probably eats the least of my 3 kids.

Actually, it was Marty. Missy was Clark's daughter.

Another problem with that series is that it made marriage in and of itself look WAY too ideal.

My beef with them is that in these books, God supposedly told them to marry the unbeliever. Like I said, though, a couple of them had reasons to do so (to show Christ's love for us--while we were still sinners) but I still have a problem with it.

Ditto. Plus, Hosea as an example is no excuse. Even back then God didn't condone his people marrying out of the faith, as a rule. He had Hosea do it as an EXCEPTION to the rule, because He wanted an EXAMPLE to show the nation of Isreal how it had been unfaithful to him.

I, personally, believe God speaks to us in the Bible ALONE, and not directly, and I believe it has been that way since the Bible was complete, but even if He does talk directly, I just can't believe He would tell us to do ANYTHING contrary to His word. He did it with Hosea, because Hosea was a prophet, but we are not in the days of prophets now.

Has anyone else done something like this?

Yes, I have, for a year, than a year off, than two more years, I home
schooled two children for a single mom. The second two years, the boy had lukemia. In California the law is that someone else can be involved in homeschooling your kids up to half the time, so the first year I taught, I had the kids M-W-F, and she did stuff with them the other 3 days, and I taught at "my" (my parents') house(she was a cleaning lady at the time, so had a flexible schedule), the other two years, she had a full time job at a company, and I taught her kids M-F mornings at her house, and then she did stuff with them on evenings and weekends. It was a blessing, but the boy died . However, the girl, and I, who this fall is starting a nursing program at the community college, still have a relationship. In fact, she comes for coffee on Friday afternoons.

Cynthia, I wondered if you saw this post?
