You KNEW I HAD to do something.

Are YOU prepared (those who live in hurricane areas), and those who don't, are you prepared for your own "disasters" that could happen in your area???

Hey guys, it was BARBI who said something to me yesterday that I used in my presentation that really made people stop and think about how we normally think, and how for learning impaired folks, they use "landmarks" and other things to get around on a normal basis - and what can be one for those folks after a storm when all signs are destroyed or damaged.

Barbi rocks.

Good morning CW and welcome to June everyone. Wow, that got here fast! We don't really have disasters, so no worries! About the worst that we get is thunderstorms and I'm sure that I would get little to no sympathy for complaining about getting wet in a thunderstorm!

Ahhh......but you DO get noreasters there and blizzards, so while you may not have them during this time of year, you deal with them in the winter.

noreasters and blizzards aren't bad at all. I guess there was some flooding up in the County a few weeks ago which I'm sure they didn't enjoy. But we don't really get hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes, etc.

True - you're in one of the few areas of the country that's "relatively" safe.

Oooh, do you know where they went in Maine? I'm guessing probably Acadia, since most of the beaches are too cold in October.

I know they went to Acadia and I'm thinking they stayed at Belfast Harbor Inn?? Is there such a place?

I've never heard of Belfast Harbor Inn, but there very well could be one. The mid-coast region has lots of inns and B&B's, etc. I've actually never been up to Belfast myself but I'm sure it's a nice place to stay.

ROFLOL.

So far this season I have been in only one tornado warning, and that was in the middle of the night and I slept thru it because they didn't turn on the sirens. The warning area was about 5 miles out of town and it was indicated only by radar and not a spotter.

But I saw on the news that Indianapolis got hit yesterday.

So Lisa is right we need to be prepared. For weather and everything else.

So funny that you started this thread topic.

I was reading the thumb in the air guesses predictions for this hurricane season. Seems that the people that specialize in this stuff expect a more active year than last.

There's not a lot to not love about Central Florida......hurricanes are one of the few.

Preparations?

The usual. Water, candles, batteries, first aid kit, cordless radios, canned foods, all important papers easily located, charcoal and lighter fluid, etc.

Praying for God's mercy once again this year.

.....are skeeters considered "disasters"??? I think I just might want to call them one.

we've had a ton of rain the past 2 weeks and them thar skeeters are coming on mighty strong! Can't even go out & do yard work w/out the skeeter net & juice -- and they like me so much 'cuz I'm really sweet and then I react to the bite - arg!

Rained so much last week that the 5th graders couldn't go on their field trip to the craters -- flash floods & the lava tubes were filling up w/ water -- ick!

good june morning, y'all!!!!

yes, lisa...i am prepared for emergencies. we don't get near as many tornadoes now as we did when i was young. we used to just go out and watch them cross the fields. couple funny tornado stories:

i remember once, when i was maybe 3 or 4...my mom holding me up to look out the basement window...and we watched the middle of our 3 cherry trees get plucked out of the earth like a radish!

another time, dad had just come in from the field and we were gettin cleaned up to go into town for dinner...and a tornado came across the field. it had the wind whirling around our little house so that it sucked the screen off their bedroom window...and took dad's 2 workshirts with it. we ran out the back door...and watched one of his shirts fly around the house!! after a couple rotations, he just reached out and grabbed it! (our neighbor 2 fields behind us found dad's other shirt out in his field the next day. lol)

but ya know what's 'plagued' us the last few years...straight windss. it's much windier, in general, here...but sometimes we get these straight winds that can be in excess of 70 MPH. they literally flattened much of the corn around here last summer. some was so bad they couldn't even pick it! just horrible for the farmers here.

Tell me about it!! I get tons more no-see-ums than the skeeters around here. Mostly in my backyard and I absolutely cannot venture out there without bug spray unless I'm just asking to be feasted on. Bleck! I hate those things. (and skeeters too!) I need to eat more garlic and onions in the summertime, I reckon.

We've already had tornadoes over here and a few tornado warnings. Besides that, I guess it's relatively safe.

Pretty much.

They have a generator and a well at their house. So if anything happened we'd be pretty set at their house.

We get lots of those in spring too -- recess duty at school is the pits because of no-see-ums! ugh!

Virginia had a sales tax holiday last week on batteries, lamps, and other disaster preparation supplies. Unfortunately, most local retailers chose not to offer any other discounts on such items, so I suspect that there wasn't that much benefit from the tax holiday.

However, the state government appears ready to recover any lost revenue from the tax holiday and then some. The governor recently proposed Virginia's second major tax increase in four years.

Skeeters are more of a plague than a disaster. :)

I dunno. For some reason I was thinking Skreyola started one once, maybe the April one?

That's correct.
