I have a semi long trip coming up and I think my daughter has motion sickness. She got sick in the car after an hour and a half. Now she complains of being 'sick' everytime we are in the car. I don't know if it's all in her head, but she used to love going on car trips. At any rate, I do not want to find out if she really does have motion sickness. It will be just me and her and last time, oh it was a mess.
I've read that they have Dramamine for children ages 2-12. Since she is in that age range can I just give it to her, or do I need to call her dr? She doesn't have any allergies.
I was also thinking of letting her have these lollipops that are like health food from the health food store. They don't have sugar or artificial sweeteners. I thought that the sweetness might help.
I am going to keep the air on in the car. Last time we took a trip, she seemed ok if the car was cool, or she had air blowing on her face. I wonder if last time she just got too hot.
Anyway, what do you think?

Would you consider a homeopathic remedy? I've used this with both my children to good effect.

Gravol also makes a 2-years & up liquid anti-nausiant. It also causes drowsiness (in most kids). It's been a good med for us on airplanes.

I'm open to a homeopathic remedy, I just don't know if I can get it in time for this weekend.
I had thought about keeping a sheet sort of up around her, over top of the harness. That way if she does chuck, all I have to do is remove the sheet.
I just don't know how I'd clean it up. It was a lot last time. I mean how do you clean the seat in the car, the childs seat, the harnesses and the child when they chuck. It was an all out bath, hose down with the hose (for the seat) and such this last time. Granted, she had a big breakfast.
Here's another question: I was planning on leaving right after lunch, should I limit her food or allow her to eat as she wants? What's better?

Ok that sounds good too. I hadn't thought of what type of foods. Sort of bland things. Like fruit, noodles (she doesn't eat sauce) or breads? Fluids isn't a problem, she'll 'eat' ice and drink lots of water with ice in it.
I've heard the magnetic things are made for children too. I'm going to look at wally world to see if they have it.

I have motion sickness. If you don't have airbags and it is safe (I am sorry, I no longer have little ones so don't know the recommendations!) to keep her up front (properly restrained, of course) that may help. I do not get car sick when sitting up front- only in the back. It has something to do with the visual field.
Anyhow... as for food, I find being hungry or being overly full will both make it worse. A light meal with both carbs and protein (but NOT a lot of either sugar or fat) is best for me. I also take light snacks like crackers or pretzels/juice which help me.
I have not used dramamine (maybe as a kid, cant remember), but I *have* used crystllized ginger. When I start feeling nauseated, I suck on a small pice and it helps. So if you can find some crystallized ginger candies from the healthfood store or just plain crystallized ginger from the grocery store, that might help. (Gingerale with real ginger might be okay, too! Haven't tried that- or even making iced tea infused with ginger).
I have tried some other home remedies and they haven't worked for me.

I'd suggest you do lunch early (or combine breakast and lunch - some kind of brunch) in order to give the food time to go down before you leave. Preferably at least an hour.
Keeping the air on in the car should really help. You could actually tell her it will help - which may help the mental side of things (ie her expectation that she will feel sick). I'd also suggest giving her her own bottle of water, and telling her that if she feels sick a sip of water will help. Also giving her her own bowl to keep by her side, in case she is sick.
Apart from that, I'd recommend regular stops - every 2 hours at least.

Will she eat ginger snap cookies? Ginger is supposed to be good for motion sickness, those worked for my brother. (I dislike them so didn't help me much)
Mint-flavored stuff can help too, that's what I use and it at least keeps me able to walk whenever the vehicle stops.

If you are pretty sure you are going to be dealing with an incident, you might consider putting a towel over the car seat, under her, then instead of needing to remove the car seat cover, there's a chance you can just remove the towel (or maybe use something waterproof too).

Well, see, that's what I'm thinking it is. She is just remembering that she got sick in the car and thinks it is the car. She was feeling poorly before we left that day and I think an overly full stomach, combined with twisty turny mountains and a hot car just made it all come back. I do think there is a mental thing going on there, but the mind body connection is strong, so I want to avoid any 'mishaps'.

Can she chew gum? If so, a minty kind might help and you could even tell her it will help and that you will turn on cold air, which will also help.

Yeah, she can chew it, when she thinks about it. The last wad ended up down the hatch.
I did call the dr and she gave me a dosage. I don't think I'll tell Nadia what it's for, just tell her to eat it. Thatt way she won't get 'addicted' to it. KWIM?

Well today and tomorrow we travel, I would appreciate your prayers! I am well prepared though, I am going to feed her a bland diet with lots of water, and earlier. Then 1 hour before travel give her the dramamine. She will have saltines, raisins and water in the car and a light sheet over her, but not really wrapped around, more or less just to cover. I have a waterproof pad under the car seat and under her on the car seat and a box of cleaning supplies with rags and shopping bags. Extra clothes, for both of us.
Am I over prepared? I'd rather be. It'll be just me. I didn't get good sleep last night, I want to make sure I'm as good as I'll get KWIM?

You might want to throw a small bucket in the car, too. Fill it with some toys and if she starts feeling sick, you could tell her to use it! I remember my dd was about the age and got a stomach virus and was able to figure out (after the first time went all over my bed!) to use a container. I had actually used a milk carton with the top cut off. It was great, because she could hold it, it was waterproof, and I could just toss it when she was done.
Another thought. I NEVER get car sick when *I* am driving. Have you considered letting her drive?
I am guessing she will be fine, though, especially with the dramamine.

BTW- the last three days, I have been VERY sick on the bus. I know what it is from- I have been doing word puzzles/reading... but if I don't it can be so boring! It is only a problem for me when it is light and now that the days are longer, it is light during my commute :(
