What is your ultimate goal for your body? Well, this is what I looked like right when I got pregnant. Probably around mid January. Of course the belly is bloating at that point. According to the charts, I need to loose about 10 lbs to be considered 'normal'. I'd like to see if I can get to that. That would be about 155. Do you have a plan to get there, or are you looking for one? Exercise and counting calories, the only thing that's tried and true for me. Do you have a time line you're working in to be 'in shape' by? I give myself one year after baby, so October 2009. If you aren't able to start working out now (pregnant mommas!! ) when do you intend to start reaching your goal? Slowly at first, but after the baby is born. I don't want to limit calories too much, just watch the 'un-neededs'. And exercise. Do you have mini-goals set up along the way for yourself? Again, watch the 'un-needed' food and still be active. I do feel better when I am! Thank you for posting that couch to 5K. I intend on going back to running after I have the baby. I don't feel safe doing it right now. So it's power walking right now.

Here is an interesting article about running. I'm not sure I agree 100% but, then again, who am I to argue with her?? But she makes some interesting points - especially about injuries. A lot of what's on these bodybuilding sites is somewhat anti-cardio. And I understand the logic behind it but, on the other hand, I'm a step instructor. It's good info, though.

The only two plans (if you could even call them plans) that really work for me long-term is either "Thinwithin" or "Intuitive Eating". In a nutshell, both plans call for listening to your bodies hunger and fullness signals and then following them. There are no forbidden foods but everything in moderation. I do walk or ride my bike several times a week. I have lost about (my weight flucuates quite a bit) 18 pounds since Feb 1st. I have yo-yo dieted in the past and gained and lost weight but this time I think I am on a good path of loosing weight at a healthy pace (about a pound a week) and will keep it off.

Starting weight (Feb 8 - 2 weeks after baby#4): 145 Goal weight: 120 Total pounds to lose: 25 Current weight: 132 Pounds lost: 13!! Pounds left to lose: 12 - just over half way there! I'm a little confused with the way my body's been losing weight this time. I've lost weight very slowly at first - using Body for Life exercise program and just trying to eat well. Then after a couple days of bad eating I'd lose a pound. During our Disney vacation (where I definitely didn't eat well, but did walk a fair amount) I lost 2 pounds. Then after wisdom tooth surgery I hardly ate anything and lost nothing. I have not resumed exercising since then and suddenly lost another 3 pounds last week. My only guess is that I'm actually undereating causing my metabolism to slow down which slows down the weight loss. I don't feel like I'm undereating though, so I'm a little nervous to eat more in case I start gaining weight!

I don't feel like I'm undereating though, so I'm a little nervous to eat more in case I start gaining weight! In my opinion, very few people actually undereat. But, in my experience, it's probably about what you're eating. BFL is tremendous but I found that I got stuck on the 40/40/20. That high (relatively) carb/low fat eventually gets to a plateau, I think. I guess our bodies eventually adapt to any system.* I average out my calories weekly just for the sake of tracking. And, in the average, I am balancing carbs/fat more now than balanceing protein/carbs. It's been a nice change. But, daily, I'm trying a carb cycling plan. Maybe that's sort of what your life's been doing for you and why you're seeing the changes in weight when your intake fluctuates more than staying steady. This is a very detailed, but very good, article on carb cycling for women. This might be what your body needs to mix it up a bit. * Oh, I just realized you're doing the BFL workouts but not necessarily eating 40/40/20. It's probably time to tighten up the diet. That workout is intense and you really need to feed properly for that program to work. That's definitely why you're finding you're losing more when you eat more. But definitely better to eat right rather than just throw caution to the wind and just eat more - you'll end up frustrated without a plan when results don't follow.

ORIGINAL: 3cappuccinosmom Do you have a plan to get there, or are you looking for one? Ummmmm....stop eating so much. Is that a plan? 'Cause that's really my only problem. I eat too much. Do you have mini-goals set up along the way for yourself? 5 lb/month. However I decided that last month and gained 5 lb. ...oh, honey, you need a better plan! I really think it's more about what you're eating than how much. If you keep it "clean" (don't eat anything you can't grow or shoot!), you'd be surprised how much you can and need to eat. And even before the weight comes off, just eating clean just makes your body work better. I think you just spend so much time taking care of everyone around you and haven't taken the time to plan out what's good for you. Eating well takes a plan - eating on purpose. It's not something you can do on the fly. When the little ones are eating PBJs and chicken nuggets, if you don't have a plan for yourself, you end up hungry and chowing down a PBJ without even thinking! That's what I fall into if I'm not careful.

ORIGINAL: paulsbride Are you following the womens guide for what to eat from Body For Life For Women? It was no where near enough food *for me* when I was following it. I tried following it to a T - I had everything in correct portion sizes, in individual containers, each grouped in their own category in the fridge. I was always hungry, so decided to stop eating the portions they suggested and just eating for my body. Things got much better OOOOOHHHHH NOOOOO! That's BFL for Women is horrible!! I wasn't thinking about that book. That woman has no clue what she's talking about. Her stupid subjective portions are a nightmare. BFL by Bill Phillips is what works. I can't believe he let that woman use his title; what she put out can't possibly be what he had in mind. I had a really great article that talked about the problems with that book but it's been a long time and I have no idea now where that came from. Even Bill Phillips' portions are pretty subjective, though. And his portions, I found, were very much guy-sized. A simple rule is that to lose weight, you need to eat 8-10x your current body weight in calories/day. There are much more complex formulas but that's a good rule. Using something like fitday.com to track calories and percentages, with a calorie goal in mind and then shooting for at least 40% of those calories from protein, you get into a groove (it's not as complicated or as much hassle as it seems at first) and it takes so much of the guesswork out of it.

I've done a modified version of the bfl, and even though it doesn't say to count calories, its easy to overeat. I haven't looked at the women's book.

Lol, I read her book and didn't like it as much as Bill Phillips... so I just used her portion advice for a couple weeks but followed his workout. Then I dumped her portion advice altogether.

I didn't post my starting weight--260. quote:

That's what I fall into if I'm not careful. I think that may be part of it. If I had unlimited time and unlimited money, I could shop only organic food and go to a gym, or even walk more than a mile a day. However, I do cook healthy food (little meat, lots of legumes, whole grains whenever possible, lots of veggies), and while the kids eat PBJ's, I almost always eat leftovers from the healthy supper the night before. Once a year we do a month of vegan eating as part of a "Daniel Fast" with our church, and I'm ashamed to say, I didn't lose a single pound this last time. I can overeat on lentil curry and brown rice just as much as on brownies. I have started to get back into the habit of drinking more water, and that does help a little bit with the eating urges.

What is your ultimate goal for your body? To get back to this or this. I am in terrible shape. After my first pregnancy I had no chance to lose any weight before getting pregnant again, so I feel like i have double the weight. I don't mind sharing here. I am 234 and my ultimate goal is 180. According to the BMI, that is still overweight, but I think that index is a load of hooey, and I know that if I reach 180, I will be healthy and in shape. Do you have a plan to get there, or are you looking for one? Not really, I've jump started a few times, but never got anywhere. I love the C25K plan, I might even start it today. I'm downloading podcasts as we speak! Do you have a time line you're working in to be 'in shape' by? I have a 10-year reunion this year, in August. It doesn't give me a whole lot of time, and I won't have reached my goal by then, but it is for sure a good place to start. If you aren't able to start working out now (pregnant mommas!! ) when do you intend to start reaching your goal? I can work out now, but I'm interested to see how running goes with the stroller... Do you have mini-goals set up along the way for yourself? A few...I'd like to lose at least 10 lbs by July 24th. That's my trip to Boston, and I want to buy some new clothes!!

ORIGINAL: BlessedMamaofmany it does help a bit. But still, eating for the sake of eating is a hard habit to break! Last night I was sorting laundry, and found myself stopping and wandering over to the pantry. I wasn't even hungry it was just habit and comfort. (I didn't snack though!) I used to have a terrible problem with stress-eating. That's one of the reasons I blew up after my mom died. I was using food like a drug. quote:
ORIGINAL: firefightermama There are Oreos in the cupboard, and ALL day yesterday I wanted some, but I didn't have any! I was so happy with myself! I also had cake in the fridge, but only let myself have some after supper. (I don't agree with depriving myself of chocolate cake...but moderation is the key) So, where I normally would have snacked on that cake all day, I just had one piece after supper last night I'm seriously going running today. I can't wait! Moderation isn't something I'm capable of, I'm afraid. You'd be mortified if you quantified that piece of chocolate cake - plug it into fitday or something for a real shocker!! I can't have anything like that in my house! I made the mistake last week of letting my kids buy Lucky Charms cereal. That's the worst thing in my house right now but that's one of my favorite things! I'ts killing me. I have to go (and stay) hard core to make any progress. To really make a life change all that just has to go. It makes me ill now to think about what I used to eat at an average "meal" (it really didn't even involve a lot of real food!) - much less a trip to McDonald's. It was nasty. Yea, my diet now is pretty boring - mostly chicken, cottage cheese, broccoli, and protein shakes. But I feel better and life is under control. Last weekend I "splurged" on a datenight with dh - swordfish, coconut rice, broccoli, and a glass of wine. Wow, I was so happy after that meal!! I needed that. I could've added a big piece of cheesecake but that would've just made me feel ill. I can't treat my body like that anymore. That's not a "treat", it was really torturing my body (and soul) to abuse it like I used to do. I used to say life's not worth living if I can't have chocolate chip cookies. That just seems silly now. I was miserable and unhealthy and all the excuses were just a ploy. Truth is, there's nothing good in that. And unless I'm going to commit and stay committed to being healthy, I'm just wasting my time and lying to myself. If I'm going to have something "bad" now, I make sure it's something special. I wont waste tons of calories and fat, undo all my hard work, on just eating any ole thing I see mindlessly - which is exactly what I used to do. When I splurge, I make sure I can get exactly what I want so it satisfies whatever I needed to satisfy, and it's worth it.

We just don't keep any snack food except popcorn and the occasional chocolate bar in the house, Micah takes all his work snacks to work and leaves them there so I'm not tempted...I'm a horrible snacker(I think I learned it from my mom). That right there is why I can't wait to move! Right now we're living with my parents. My mom has serious food issues too and keeps TONS of junk food in the house... and if she sees something being eaten, she buys more of it. So I do great eating at work. I keep fruit in my desk, Lean Cuisines for lunch, oatmeal for breakfast, etc. Then I get home and I have Snickers bars in the freezer, malted milk balls in the pantry, fresh baked cake on the counter... it's a nightmare! I have to work very, very, very hard at being disciplined and the food situation at home does not help. I've tried asking her to stop buing some of that stuff, but she just starts buying something else then. And there is only so much I can say, since it is her house. URGH! I'm excited to hear that C25K is offering podcasts now. I'm going to have to look into that. I may join y'all in starting that in a week or two! --Kat
