I'd be interested in knowing which podcasts each of you are using.

If you have a link, that would be great.

I think I will be using one that I found for free on iTunes. But, if there is one that you are using and just love and would recommend, I'd love to know.

Thanks.

Count me in for another one who uses the Christian Indie mp3's. I'm really, REALLY enjoying them- I have to stop myself from singing along when I'm at the gym.

Landabee- baby steps. Just keep moving in the right direction and you'll get there.

landabee, what do you mean you can't walk that fast? There's no speed requirement...
Sometimes when I do the c25k on some of the runs I am barely doing more than a hoppy-walk...
Don't be discouraged, we all have to start somewhere. I'm so glad you went for a walk even though you were alone!! Good for you!

I do the Couch to 5K by time. Not sure how far I actually go in a run. I did "walk" it off and figured that around my "track" (aka living room/kitchen) it's about 20 m. So...on the runs where they wanted a person to go 200 m, I would need 10 trips around. Sounds complicated, but it really isn't.

Basically, moving & doing more than you were to start is the key. You can do this!!!

Just keep at it Landabee.

I know the podcasts "suggest" you walk/run in tempo, at least my set does. But if you can't, at least you're out there moving. Just keep doing it. (I can't run as slow as my podcast wants me too. I feel like I'm pretending to run in slow-motion if I move that slow ... must be my long stride again.)

If you feel like you need to go with the temp of the music, get a few more walks under your belt. Get your heartrate up for 20 min a day and keep moving. The idea behind cardio is to get your heartrate up for 20 minutes. If walking briskly does it, then just walk until walking is easy for ya. Let step it up a notch.

Landa, you can do it! Your doing great already!

Like the other ladies said, there is no real speed requirement for the C25K, there are certainly runs in there where I am barely jogging. Our bodies adapt pretty quickly to cardio exercise, I think the rule when I used to run outside was no more then 3-4 runs on the same course because your body adapts and it's no longer a challenge. Now, I'm not saying you need to find 50 walking courses, but just trying to encourage you that while the progress seems slow your body and cardio endurance ARE improving. Even if it doesn't seem that way

Landabee -- I second, third, fourth, etc all the suggestions that you concentrate on your time spent exercising, not the distance or speed you're going right now. It'll get easier and easier the more you exercise, and THEN, you can be concentrate on increasing your speed. You can do it!

We did run #1 of week four yesterday. (We opted to each push a single stroller instead of one of us pushing the huge double stroller. MUCH easier!) It's getting easier with each workout. I had done thirty minutes on the stationary bike before we went out, so I felt like I got a good bit of exercise in yesterday.

DH and I have both lost a couple of pounds so far this week. Woo-hoo! Our problem is maintaining, though. I'd love to lose ten more pounds and stay there. Hopefully, a regular routine of running will help make this happen.

I thought the other day while on my run that I should start a dog-walking business on teh side. Take the dogs for a good run while I do my own. There are soooooooooo many dogs on my street, and I only see a couple of the owners actually ever walking them.

i haven't run lately but i am going to hopefully go to spin class today. i never lost any weight running (but I could focus on the diet more too). I did lose weight going to spin class. Plus i bought a mountain bike but I can't get up the small hills so maybe i won't look dumb outside

pray for me too I need to be a better cook. LOL I can follow directions and recipes since I bake but the timing on cooking meats trips me up sometimes. ( i think my mom overcooked some of the meat cause it was tough but NO one will say anything)

Hmmm...maybe that's why my runs seem so easy nowadays. It's the same path over and over...granted I run for longer...but....hmmmm.....

Probably. And I doubt you can really get up to a good stride if your running inside. You should just get out and go!

Some of you might like reading THIS lady's blog. She started out the year(or maybe it was last year) having to the minimum number of months of exercise so that she could have weight loss surgery. After exercising, she no longer needs it!

The name of her blog "Fat Runner Confessions". HERE is her "bio" entry.

Thanks everyone.

I am just back from tonight's walk. It was hard. But I kept in mind that I didn't have to try to hang with the beat of the music.

I'm doing well, with 40 minutes of gardening (200 calories burned according to sparkpeople) and 5 minutes of seated leg lifts. The work I did in the garden burned off half of the lucious cinnamon roll I had today!

As for food logs, I find sparkpeople's easy to use. It took me a while to figure it out, but it's helpful for me to learn how many calories and carbs are in that cinnamon roll. (Over 450 calories with the frosting and 50 carbs) Sparkpeople also has helpful nutrition, fitness, motivational and health information articles.

I might go to the Y tomorrow as it'll be too hot to walk outside. Tomorrow is also strength training day. That's necessary for good health too.

I have a tip for those who want to lose weight.
I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes about a year and a few months ago, and back then I was 189 lbs. at 5ft. 3in. tall. My doctor put me on a 1800 calories a day diet and then sent me to a nutritionist/dietician. I got educated about the diabetes and about what I should, could, and shouln't be eating, and before I knew it the weight just came off, and that was without exercising. Of Course I am exercising now, it is important to my health and to keep the weight off, and to help me to shed the extra 20lbs. I have left. I wasn't exercising at first, because to be honest I was lazy and I was also fatigue and feeling sick all the time, due to the diabetes. I knew I had to change some things, so when I saw that the weight was coming off inspite of me not doing any exercising, but just eating right. It gave me the drive and incintive to do what I needed to do. The diabetic diet is not as strict as some would have you to believe, and it's really not that hard to follow or keep up with. Try following the diabetic diet for one or two weeks, and I guarantee you'll see the pounds begin to come off. It's a very healthy diet, so there should be no health concerns, and you can find the diet in many cookbooks or books dealing with weight and health.

Just watch the estimates of calories burned. I know on fitday, it's wildly over-estimated. The only reliable way I ever found where I know I'm not basically guessing, was to get my heart rate monitor. It's all relative, I know, but for reference, it takes me about 30 minutes in an intense step class to burn 200 calories. But, IMO, I think gardening should be for bonus points - I hate it.

For people with a lot to lose, the diabetic diet is phenomenal! For anyone, though, it's just a really good reality check for how we just should be eating anyway!!

The diabetic diet is very similar to South Beach. And VERY successful.

I did run 1 of week for yesterday. I couldn't run the whole thing, there were 2 running segments I had to walk part of. Although I think I've been dehydrated when running; it's been over 100* outside with no wind --- blech! I need to figure out how to get water while running. I wish I could afford a camelback.

Thanks for the link, Ryanne! I've been wanting to get one of these for myself while working out and for Marshall- he's becoming very active in Cub Scouts and spending lots of time tromping through the woods with his buddies. Gotta keep that munchkin hydrated too!

Not a good report today: no walk.

Came home from work... and sat down at home computer to do work. Have been at it for three hours off and on. Huge, important project with a deadline of twelve noon tomorrow. (prayers appreciated)

To make matters worse, I ate white rice with dinner.

Tomorrow is a new day. I will walk......... and I won't eat simple carbohydrates.

I'm not gonna give up like I usually do.

landabee, it's ok to skip a day...as long as your skipped days don't start adding up!

And, if you're looking for a better substitute for white rice, try Basmati, I love it, it's better than plain white rice (and I hate brown rice, so it works for me)

Jasmine is a good substitute for plain white rice as well.

I finally finished up week 1 of the c25k- for me that was completing 3 full workouts, even though it took me more than a week because we're still erratic about going to the gym or getting in a full workout. It was SO much easier indoors than trying to do it outside! I did use the treadmill to try and increase my running speed for some of the intervals- I varied it between 5 and 6 mph- my legs are so short that I think anything faster than that might be a sprint for me.

Is Jasmine whole grain? I've never gotton a straight answer about that, which leads me to believe that it's not. I have been figuring if it was a whole grain they would capitalize on that fact on the packaging... but I don't know.

Hmm...good question. I've never thought about it. We buy ours in 25 lb bags, so I don't pay too much attention to the packaging. Is basmati rice a whole grain then, or only brown rice? I know I've seen brown jasmine and/or basmati rice before.

You can get basmati brown rice. That's all the rice I buy. I believe it's available in white basmati, too.
