Room2Grow -> Preterm labor? (6/4/2008 3:51:33 PM)

*not about me*

Didn't want to panic anyone, but a dear friend called today and she is 22 weeks along- they noticed last week that her cervix looked short and sent her to a specialist this week and it has shortened another cm since then. Her first pg ended in m/c at ten weeks, but she didn't find out until a few weeks after that, and now this. Does anyone have any experience/encouragement in this area? They are giving her progesterone suppositories and an oral med to stop any contractions- I feel so bad, she is so worried and I am so far away, all I can do is encourage over the phone... The baby looks great on u/s, but her body does not seem to be cooperating[:(]

Are they going to give her a cerclage or put her on bed rest?

I am so sorry for the pain she is going through!!

At this point, they do not think that would be a good idea since it (her cervix) is short enough that there is a risk of puncturing the sac if they did do a cerclage which would definitely be bad. They are also concerned that with her shortening that she may not be able to get to help in time and she would tear, thus having permanent damage to her cervix which may make any more babies impossible.

wow! Do you know how short it is now?

Also, I know she's likely not thinking of her *next* pregnancy at this point, but maybe having a cerclage next time around would help. I am being treated like I have incompetent cervix (or as it is now called - "insufficient cervix") but they don't know for certain that I have it.

Is she being monitored in the hospital right now?

When they thought Judah was going to be born at 19 weeks I was terrified. Having friends check in (even if I wasn't keeping in touch with them at that time!) meant so much to me. I am glad she's got you as a friend.

They are having her come in once a week for u/s and monitoring at this point, but have not started bed rest or anything else at this point, just told her to take it easy in general...

That seems weird to me. It sounds really serious, and I would think they'd be more aggressive about trying to prevent preterm labor.

Does taking it easy include pelvic rest for her? Orgasms can trigger contractions, which she would want to avoid.
I was put on pelvic rest from 19 weeks on with Judah, and from the beginning of this pregnancy.

I couldn't find a whole lot of information online about the progesterone suppositories (I started taking them at about 20 weeks) however they made me feel like I was bruising in and around my vagina. I told my doctor and he said it was the progesterone as "it doesn't do that" - but I stopped taking them and in a matter of days that feeling went away. Then I started on it again and the feeling came back. I kept taking them till 33 weeks, but I wish I could have found someone or somewhere that mentioned that they could make down there feel weird!

She may find THIS SITE useful. It is primarily about incompetent cervix, however there is a lot in there about preterm labor and bedrest and such.

I called her and warned her about the progesterone- thanks for that cause she's pretty much freaking about everything right now. She starts the progesterone tonight and is now on anti-contraction meds, but I don't know which ones. She is on pelvic rest, but since she has a desk job, they don't think that it will really cause any harm, though they may move to bedrest later...

I meant the doctor told me it was not the progesterone causing it ... which you probably gathered is what I meant from the rest of what I said[8D]

I hope the baby stays safe inside her!

I will be praying for her and baby.......
