Discuss soap operas (daytime) and whethere they are just entertainment, really stupid entertainment, or evil entertainment.
Why do some people that trash daytime soaps watch really nasty or violent stuff at night, and think that is different?

probably the worst thing about having a job during the day is that i can't watch Days of Our Lives anymore....that was my favourite soap growing up....
they are no worse than what you can see on television at night...the acting might be a little sinful, but other than that, they are ok (for me) to watch.

I used to watch them when I was younger, but other than morbid curiosity on an occasional sick day, I have no interest at this point. I do occasionally browse discussions about soap operas I used to watch, on TelevisionWithoutPity.
The reality of writing for a long running dramatic serial that focuses on relationships (in post sexual revolution America) seems to invite the depiction of immoral behavior (with actors in and out of the revolving door, characters tend to switch partners frequently). It's distasteful and beyond belivability that a woman would be involved with every male in a family - or at least those members who aren't a blood relation to her - and having children by more than one of them (The Bold and the Beautiful), or marry her ex-husband's father and have the father's child - meaning that her youngest child is the aunt of her two older children as well as their sister!!! (Guiding Light...ok, the ex was adopted, but...still...ugh) or, regarding the same female character on The Bold and The Beautiful, both mother and daughter each having been involved with the same man...and more than one man falling into that category!
The daytime soaps do seem to be dying out because of different interests and lifestyles of different generations. It doesn't seem like college students watch them in droves like they used to when I was younger. From what I've heard, Guiding Light and As The World Turns are on their last legs. I don't know about the Bell soaps (Young and the Restles, and Bold and the Beautiful) and the ABC soaps. NBC has already cut out, what, two out of three?

Soap operas sure have changed through the years. I can remember watching them with my mother when I was young. Back then they were only 30 minutes with some of them only 15 minutes.
I haven't watched soaps in 13 years.

I used to be into All My Children and As the World Turns. But the storylines got so predictable and mind-numbing that I gave it up. For instance I remember there was a character on ATWT who learned she had a half-sister she'd never known about. Also around the time, the character was in the beginning stages of a relationship with a potential new boyfriend. It wasn't hard to see how it was going to work: The long-lost sister will be eventually found, she'll have some chip on her shoulder because she didn't grow up as privileged as her sibling, the sisters won't get along well, the long-lost one will go after the other's boyfriend, sleep with him, and of course, get pregnant from said encounter. And that's exactly how it played out on the show. Ugh.
I watched others off and on, have friends who were (and I guess still are) die-hard Days and Y&R viewers (I never much were into those), and another I did like was Santa Barbara while it was on, it seemed a little different than the norm. But now there aren't any I keep up with (and I don't really miss them).

Anyway, back on track...I've been a huge soap fan for...well...my whole life, actually. The CBS soaps only. I gave up on B&B and GL a long time ago...they just became too much for me to stomach. I had been watching Y&R and ATWT though and really enjoyed it. Then the whole gay storyline started up on ATWT. I was disgusted by it so I'd not watch that storyline. BUT God started really dealing with me...conviction, you'd call it. I realized a story that glorifies sodomy was no different than one that glorifies adultery, fornication, etc.
So...after several days of unexplainable negative feelings...anger, depression...just can't really put a name to it...I resolved to stop watching, asking the Lord for strength. (I tell ya, it's like an addiction!) Miraculously, the heaviness lifted! I can't say I haven't flipped over there for a minute or two, but I'm not watching like I used to or scheduling my day around an important episode.
So, there may be some "evility" to them, I suppose.

I think of the late '70s and the '80s as being the "good old days" for soaps, and there was less immorality, but I just remembered that it was the time of the Luke and Laura relationship on General Hospital, which went from rape to true love over the course of several months.
Oh, as far as sick days...if I even attempt to watch, I can't stand to watch more than about 10 minutes. For one thing, the quality of the writing is lower, and for another, there's about three times as many commercials as in prime time.

Soap Operas have changed over the years and not for the better. They are using words that my mama would wash my mouth out with soap with. Plotlines are becoming predictable if not over the top. They are getting into more gay storylines on certain shows and most of the core characters that they had in the beginnings are being phased out or killed off. Some of the storylines are stupid like on GH with Robin and Patrick blogging. What nonsense.

Evil? No. Neither is prime time tv. Amoral, maybe, but definitely not evil.
The writing stinks, the plots have been rehashed so many times it's ridiculous, and the acting is for the most part horrible. In order to save money they've let long-time characters go and bring in inexperienced pretty faces in their places. It's impossible to identify with any of the characters, the new writers have no concept of the history of some of these shows and therefore write stories that flat out ignore that history, yet the producers don't understand why the ratings are tanking.

My favorite soap opera of all time was called Another Life and it was on CBN! That was what I watched every night about 10 or 10:30 p.m. It was only a half hour. As you may guess, it was a soap actually about Christians, although of course it had its share of bad guys, evil villainesses, etc. Immorality, since it is a part of this sinful world, was sometimes a part of the storylines, but no sex scenes or anything like that. I loved this show and I would love to see repeats of it. Whenever a character became a follower of Jesus, that was so great. It was not like that was every week - probably one character a year or so.

I don't watch American soap operas but I do watch British ones.
Coronation Street is my favourite (and my husband's too!) The reason why I prefer British ones to American ones is once a character dies, they are dead! There is no coming back from the dead, no long lost twin appearing, none of those silly storylines. The storylines are completely real (though obviously more happens on this one Street than any other street in the world).
And the characters wear the same outfits again and again.

I remember watching General Hospital, Days Of Our Lives, One Life to Live, with my mother growing up then I added Young and The Restless, Bold and the Beautiful, Guiding light and All my Children to that list as I got older. Being some of the shows were on at the same time I would do channel surfing or tape one of the other shows. Soaps aren't like they used to and now I only keep up with the soaps by picking up a Soap Opera Digest from grocery store or read from the internet. But I don't watch them anymore cause they have changed so much!

I remember when on The Young & The Restless Victor was a beautician, and was sleeping with Mrs. Chancellor. Jill was her maid in a black maid uniform. (I was in high school in the 70's)
My grandmother was also an avid watcher of the CBS soaps....and got hooked on "The Guiding Light" BEFORE it was shown on TV......when it was on the radio....
But, with today's hundreds of cable/satellite channels, the audience just isn't there like it used to be...
My wife "keeps up" a bit with some of the ABC soaps, but rarely watches (and, she's a stay-at-home mom, with all 3 of our kids at school).....she just doesn't have time to sit down EVERY DAY, except occassionally (like when folding laundry), to watch them!...she usually "out and about" doing errands and everything like that....

Regardless of the fact that many of us have changed our ways & don't center our lives around them, the fact is the writing stinks today. I was really into the ABC lineup for years until probably about 1990. The days of Billy Clyde Tuttle on AMC were the when writers were serious. And General Hospital has never been able to make it good since the Luke & Laura wedding (first time). I'm sick of the garbage today on them & really could care less to see all the homosexuality on them. I may catch an episode of Days when I'm off from work, but I'm not desperate too.
Seventh Heaven is very similar due to the fact that like soap operas, the father was made to be very weak just as nearly all men on soaps. The display of men is terrible & as women we should not fill our minds w/ this stuff on a regular basis lest we develop an improper view of men. kd

I don't think soaps are more evil than prime time. Most prime time series have become like soap operas. I watch two soaps, but I am just as devoted to several prime time shows. Neither are close to reality.

I agree with this statement. I used to watch Days, and my mom still watches it, so I still get updates on it from time to time, and if I'm at my mom's occasionally I may see it. It seems like they always do the same thing, where one lady is in love with two different guys, she of course gets pregnant and doesn't know who the father is, etc. That and the old amnesia thing - it seems like if you live in Salem, your chance of experiencing amnesia at least once, if not multiple times, in your life is like 10,000% of what the chances in any other town would be.
On another note, I believe I once read or heard that when The Guiding Light started out (on radio), it was actually a storyline about a pastor and his church flock. Can anyone else confirm that?

I hadn't heard the pastor part, but I had heard that Guiding Light was one of many soaps that started on radio.
