Gas price record reaches $4 a gallon
AAA's daily survey tops the milestone for the first time after a 1.7-cent rise Sunday.
NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Gasoline rose to a milestone mark Sunday as the national average compiled by motorist group AAA reached $4 a gallon for the first time.
The national average for regular unleaded rose 1.7 cents to $4.005, according the daily measure on the group's Web site. That surpassed the previous record of $3.989 set Thursday.
The milestone was expected after a surge in crude oil prices added more than $16 to a barrel of oil over the last 2 trading days. Crude settled at a record $138.54 a barrel Friday, up by $10.75, after setting an all-time intraday high of $139.12.
The $10.75 gain was the biggest one-day advance in dollar value ever, nearly doubling the previous mark of $5.49 set Thursday. Weakness in the dollar, geopolitical concerns and an analyst's prediction of $150-a-barrel oil by July 4 helped spur Friday's advance.
In a statement Friday, AAA urged gasoline station owners not to overreact to the single-day oil spike.
"Consumers should not be overcharged for gasoline simply because the oil markets reacted so strongly to today's news," AAA said.

I can't say that I am surprised but how much would gas have to be before you are forced to stop driving your car? I think there is a limit as to how much one could pay. Would you just keep on making sacrifices so you can keep driving?
As for me I don't know the answer to that. I drive a company car which pays for the gas. I don't know how long that is going to last because some of my co-workers had to give up their cars. At this point I will have to wait and see.......

Is the poll asking what you think is the most you would pay for gas?
I voted $7.
I think by the end of the summer some places may see gas prices at $6.
I participate in another forum and a few members that are from California are already seeing gas stations charge $4.73!
They calculated that since April, gas has risen 25cents each month (and even increased 20 cents in one night!).
So, I wouldn't be surprised if it hits $6 sometime this summer in some areas of the country, the rate gas has just kept on increasing.

Really I don't have a choice. In order to even get groceries, for my hubby to go to work/class, we pretty much have to drive. When school is in session for the kids, I have to drive more too. We are already cutting our driving BIG time. OBVIOUSLY the housing market stinks so selling our house and moving closer isn't a very viable option either. I don't over do the driving. Haven't in at least the last year. I do what needs to be done and DON'T drive into town to drop a child off at something go home, just to turn around and go back in to pick them up. I make my kids carpool, if possible, with other families. Unfortunately many many families are seriously limiting and some are even cutting out ALL extra activities for their children. We have also stopped going to the church we love attending - because it is just to hard on our gas budget to get there every Sunday.
How much more can we take? Honestly our budget is shot - our savings is pretty much gone (between high gas prices and hubby being unemployed). I don't know how much more we can take, but I'm certain it's not much.

I think that $6.00 a gallon will be a reality in the near future. Most of us are pretty much stuck in this mess because we have few, if any, options outside of owning and driving a vehicle. I could reduce the amount of driving I do and use public transoprtation to get to and from work (I still have to drive 15 miles to the nearest Metrorail station), but I would pay for it in another way. I'd loose an hour of sleep and I already don't get enough anyway...usually about 5 - 6 hours a night. I think the soloution is the win the lottery  !!!! Then I can quit working and wont have to drive much at all!!!! But the high price of gas has become more than an inconvenience; it's a quality of life issue. And then you have the president of Iran saying that the price of oil is too low and needs to be raised to reflect its true value....

Well, once you do the conversion, I am currently paying $5.11/gallon.
Gas prices are much higher up here (and in the rest of the world....I recently read a blog stating "I love our neighbours to the south but can they please please please stop complaining about gas prices" - LOL...don't worry, we can all complain at this point.)
I bought bus tickets yesterday. So I guess $5/gallon is enough to get me to stop. There are still places that I need to drive to, but we have cut down everywhere we can.

I need to go to work (35 miles each way).....
I cannot "choose" to stop paying for gas. It's a "necessity"....just like electric, water and basic telephone service is for our home....(cable/satellite TV, for those who live in urban areas....now THAT is a "luxury")
we're already making sure we don't drive much more than necessary (cutting out the "sunday drives", and that sort of thing)...
on friday, i am driving my wife and kids up to her parents house in arkansas....they go up there every summer for a 4-5 week stay....and just "hang out", while I am here toiling away with work and all....gets the kids out of the city for a while. So, that's one tank of gas there....to drive them up there....then, i catch a plane back to Dallas on Father's Day.....

I reduced my driving from 15,000 miles/year to 5,000 miles/year. I only drive when there is no choice now. I double up on errands with going to work whenever I can. I do some on the way in and others on the way home. My entertainment is all off of the cable TV or internet now. I was using that already. It takes a while to get used to it. I did get a bit apartment crazy for a month or so at first but it has settled down.

It could be up to $5.00 a gallon by the end of the year. It all depends when the dollar becomes stronger as to what may happen. We unfortunately have no choice and need to change our habits. I have mine such as walking to the store or getting things on my way somewhere. We need to develop alternative methods and fast. We cannot drill in Alaska due to the environmentalists and this could really help us in the long run.

I just heard speculation this morning that gas prices could top $250.00 per barrel sometime in 2009, which would basically double the price at the pump from what it is today. Right now I'm just wishing that we could find a way to convert dandilions and crabgrass into fuel. That's a renewable resource that I can't seem to deplete no matter how hard I try.

Yes, you're right. But by the time these factors begin to really affect the cost of gasoline there will probably be at least a few new major environmental laws in effect that will balance them out and keep gas prices high.

Sad to say some of us can not stop buying gas as stated but just cut where we can The thing i can see is why the govt.,(remember the 4 day work week) and schools can not do what we did in the 80's 4 day work week. carpooling etc Cut out junk like the ski boats etc , their is many thing still tha could be done but the one with money will not give the big toys up. We as middle working class will have to . As for us it Title, rent,car,food gas money then what left. Yes church need to cut back on activities and communty activies too, I truely belive that why the oil country see us the USA as gas hogs and they relly do not care. We have oil here in the ground if the gove would release it and let it be refined, we have oil, gas,jobs,!!

It is unfortunate that in some areas people do not have transit systems to get to work or to just travel in general. If gas keeps on going up the way it is more people are going to work just to put gas in their car. Some people have a breaking point. If they can't pay for gas with cash are they just going to rely on credit cards to put gas in their tank? Perhaps it is that way for some people right now. It's just crazy how the price is getting out of control.

Yes, that's my husband and I now for instance! He drives 70 miles round trip to work each day, then about 40 miles to another job after that one! We've always been on a budget but now it's every two weeks we're making a new one and cutting money from some other area to put gas in the vehicle! I'm a stay at home mom so my driving is not too much, I only have to fill up once every two months on average. But last month we almost spent as much on gas as our mortgage costs us. Unbelievable.
Oh and there is no transit system in our area either. I hear a lot of people on tv and radio saying "why not just use public transit more often?" but it is simply unavailable to many people in this country who live in rural areas.

Or there are areas that have public transit that is having to cut their budgets, raise fares AND cut routes that service outlying areas. We used to have a bus stop 10 miles away that my hubby could have driven his car to, parked it for the day, and grabbed the bus into class at the college. The bus would make that route every 3 hours which would have been perfect for my hubby. BUT they cut that route due to budget cuts. Even mass transit is feeling the pinch. Even with the demand for use they simply can't afford to keep that route and several others so cuts were made.
Spent $50 on gas for the van today - it was on empty and I barely got over half a tank. It's got to last me til the 25th.

As sad as it is, We have to keep paying. My husband has to be able to go to and from work in order for us to survive. Where we are at there is no public transportation. We recently bought a house and that area has no transit either. Lucky though, it's only a quarter mile from the school my boys will be going to for the next few years. So I can walk them to school in the morning rather than drive them as I have been doing. Instead of going to the grocery store a few times a week like I used to I've been making one large trip every two weeks w/ a smaller trip in the middle to pick up extra eggs, milk bread. I rarely get to go back home to see my family. They live about 90 miles east of me. It is just too expensive to make the trip often.

I guess I will pay whatever the price is as the need arises. I mean, what am I supposed to do. I could cut back on my driving but that wouldn't be very much fun would it. The USA is a major contributing factor into the worlds economy and even just today OPEC has noticed that the US economy is taking a hit and OPEC also knows that if no one is buying gas and oil it hurts them as well, so they have stepped up production. Prices will probably level off at some point but either way, I have to get to my kids soccer game.

We have no choice. As long as infrastructure here is set up for cars, we are going to have to drive. Our city has a half-decent PT system, but the busses don't run on a schedule that dh can use to get to work, and quite honestly, the ones running through our area are not safe, nor is me standing around at a bus stop with three small children safe in our area.  If we could walk places without crossing multiple major intersections, I would gladly walk miles, but where we live, there are miles and miles of roads with no sidewalks at all, no way to stay out of traffic. If pt were safe, or if we had a better railway system (I loved the trains in Germany!) we would do that rather than driving, for sure.
We are actually moving across town and I will be able to walk about 1.5 miles to get to the drug store/dollar store/thrift store, and I will be doing that rather than driving. However, there are no grocery stores *anywhere* nearby that I could reasonably walk to.

Doe's anyone know how to store gas? I have heard of people doing it lately.
I'm ready to store it at the $4 We are paying in Mn. Save me some for when it is $6 a gallon.

When it drops back down under 3.00... then what?
Just wait, it will go down again soon. Speculation is what has made it go up so much. More production is coming online soon and OPEC is also considering the problem of unwarranted price inflation due to speculation, it will soon begin to drop. If nothing else it will drop because they, (the arabs), would rather have liberals in power here. If they let prices continue to increase or even stay this high, they risk helping the conservatives regain power due to the US comsumer beginning to blame the do-nothing congress.
The price will go down soon. I would not be surprised to see prices around $2.00 a gallon by November.
