I use the Adidas Cotton (& Aluminum Free) brand. I use different scents depending on my mood when I buy it. They aren't heavily scented at all which is a main reason why I like them.

Christine, I'll have her check into it and get the name. None of the names given sound familiar.

Can I ask why everyone is so concerned about aluminium in their deoderant? I've never heard of this before.

I prefer to use Secret Platinum Soft Solid in shower fresh scent, but it's hard to find here so I usually settle for the same brand in powder fresh. I've been using it for the last 7-8 years. Before that, I was using Degree or a Suave aerosol and ended up getting nasty sores(seriously...I have scarring from those things...it's gross). I went to a dr and was told to try a roll on and have only had one of those sores since then. I think it has to do with the antipersperant as well as the aerosol plugging up my pores.

I've thought about trying the Secret Clinical Strength but am afraid to do something that will mess up what has been a good thing for the last 7 years! :)

Aluminum in deo causes a plug to form so you can't sweat from that gland.

There is also the concern that aluminum can have a neurological affect(it is considered a neurotoxin) such as an increase in risk/rate of Alzheimer's. I encourage anyone to look up info about aluminum in deodarant and read about it for themselves.

It's not a risk I want to take when there are other alternatives out there available that have the same or similar affect.

This is one of those things that if you ask 2 people, you'll get 2 answers. I tend to be a cynic when it comes to stuff like this because it seems there are groups out there who will argue pretty much anything is harmful and I'm not one to jump on a bandwagon unless there is some clear evidence. This is one of those cases. I am NOT arguing that people are silly to be concerned, I am just saying that we need to make sure we have the facts and base our decisions on facts, not hype.

So, yes, the aluminum salts to block the sweat glands so you don't sweat (or sweat as much depending on how strong the anti-perspirant solution is). I personally wouldn't be a fan of something that completely blocked my ability to sweat, but what I use still allows some sweating, so I'm not concerned. The only real concern is some people with sensitive skin may have allergic reactions (but that's true of anything) and in rare cases, a cyst can develop if a hair follicle is blocked over a long period of time. However, this is rare because let's face it - there's a reason we have to keep reapplying the deoderant - it's not a permanent solution to sweating and the permanent solution would be what would result in a cyst.

As far as Alzheimer's. There have been some studies that have found an increase in levels of aluminum in people with Alzheimer's. The question that is often not asked is whether this is a cause or an effect of the disease. If you look deeper, you will find that there is no increase in Alzheimer's for those who have worked a lifetime in the aluminum industry which would be pretty clear support for aluminum not being a cause of Alzheimers. What we do know about the disease is that it causes the affected cells to be less capable of ridding themselves of pollutants. This would actually result in increased levels of pollutants, so science indicates here that increased levels of aluminum that some research (not all) finds in those afflicted with this disease is a RESULT not a CAUSE of Alzheimer's.

There is also much rumor about the aluminum causing breast cancer. This has been refuted by the National Cancer Institute, American Cancer Society, etc.

I'm not dismissing anyone who chooses alternatives. I just don't see evidence that makes me personally be concerned. Call me a cynic, but most of what I find online is people with an agenda trying to push that agenda with no solid science behind them. I'm not saying there is absolutely no reason for concern, but rather that I'm not convinced.

That's how so many of these studies are. There are often huge directional issues. Maybe what looks like a cause is actually an effect, and maybe there are other things that contributed to the correlation. I just took a really intense class on research and studies/results and one thing I definitely came away with is that a correlation does not equal causation. It simply means there is a correlation. There could be a zillion other variables involved in those studies. I'd want to see their study design to see how they controlled for extraneous variables before I would worry too much about it. I've definitely become a cynic when it comes to study results!

Me too! I took a class in college that was basically all about how to evaluate whether a study is a good one or not. I thought I was a cynic before that class, but man... It just made me realize how you can make a study say just about anything - true or not.

I"m following along here, and I'm now interested in trying the crystal deodorant again- I tried one made by Kiss my Face, but it was pretty useless. By the time I gave up, the plastic roll-on ball smelled like ME!
Christine- I know how you feel. Summer has hit here (AZ), and the air conditioning in my car is being finicky again. Lady Speed Stick is NOT doing the trick, and neither does Adidas or Secret.

I couldn't find any samples online. So I'm buying real sizes and am going to use them for a period of time to see if they work. I threw away my Degree already and am using Secret Platinum. As soon as I find the Crystal stuff I'll get that too.

I'm still using the Secret Clinical STrength at night, becasue I do believe it's helping. I noticed an improvement with it when I started using it.

Probably a good sign: I sat in the sun all day yesterday (have a red face as evidence) and didn't notice any abnormal sweating or such. So Secret so far is OK.

I wonder if I need to treat deodorant like I do shampoo. Switch it up every now and then and surprise my body.

I found a bottle of the crystal stuff at the grocery store yesterday, so you should be able to get it just about anywhere. I'm waiting for your report before I try it.
You could also go in the travel section and buy the travel sizes...might be cheaper.

I hadn't thought of buying the travel sizes. I'll look into that next time I'm at Target. I wonder what kind of selection is in the travel deodorants.

I use the Adidas cotton deo because of the health concerns related to aluminum in anti-persperants. The anti-persperants I used before were leaving sores under my arms, NOT pleasant when one tries to shave! However, the Adidas stuff isn't doing the job as well as I would have liked, and I hate the smell. *shudders* I used to use the Crystal stuff, but I broke my one stick by dropping it one too many times, and never bought another! I can't remember whether it worked for me or not, I really should try it again.

You can find it at any Natural food store, but if you happen to shop online there is a site I use for all of my shampoos and whatnot where you can buy them at cents over wholesale price (so they usually have it cheaper than in store even if you calculate shipping): http://www.luckyvitamin.com and then look under product brands for Toms of Maine :) HTH

You can use witch hazel lotion under your arms as a deodorant!

Also, believe it or not, an indigestion product called Milk of Magnesia!

Both are very gentle on the skin and can be used directly after shaving.

I don't have either around the house. I might have to pick up some witch hazel on Friday when I have to go to the pharmacy anyway.
