I also could support a one-stop.

It would sure make it easier to refer to our previous posts! They wouldn't be scattered across a lot of different threads!

I asked and got told admin didn't think it was necessary. Maybe if somebody sent fudge?

Maybe they're just hoping they'll go away!!

IMO, it's sad really when you start boxing in recording artists into secular and Christian genres. You miss a lot of God glorifying music when you do that.

I have a couple of favorites who are not billed as Christian bands, they are not a part of CCM as we would define it in Christianity Today or whatever.

A really popular example is Lifehouse. They have many songs, etc. that are well written, well sung and well played (yeh, sometimes overplayed to be sure ) on the local radio stations.

But if you sequester yourself from these types of artists, you miss how God is being glorified in their lives without the Christian-eze lyrics and see how unbelievers are drawn to them through their music.

It's always a great conversation starter into a spiritual discussion.

One of the most popular videos on youtube is the Everything skit with Lifehouse music in the background.

Would you list Orthodox Jewish music as "christian" or "secular?"

Artists like Avraham Fried, Mendy Wald, Oif Simchas, Matisyahu .....

Oi! The OT is part of the Christian Bible so how about a non-sensical genre name like "pre-Christian Christian".

Yes, I listen to what you are calling "secular" music. Most of my CDs are of "secular" music, because I enjoy it. Much of that the earlier churches used were song by the greats, just as many of their tunes were those taken from the local bars. Some of the music sang in the churches were first what you are calling "secular," and many of the songs brought into the churches in the early 20th century were also used as Nazi marching songs. Does that make such songs (one example would be Glorious Things of Thee Are Spoken) evil or even "secular?"

When some great religious authority finally explains to me why I should not listen Rachmaninoff, Bach, Beethoven, to or even Tiajuana Brass(!) and the like, I will stop.

I'll listen to pretty much anything as long as the lyrics are clean. Except country. That's just not my thang.

Man, if the personal convictions thing were doctrine, I'd be going to hell because I like Kanye West's beats.

That said, I listen to a ton of Christian music too. 4/5 of my top 5 listened to artists lists on last.fm would be Christian. (Hillsong United, dc Talk, Phil Wickham, Audio Adrenaline)

Tiajuana Brass(!)

Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass! I had to give them a listen when I saw that name. "Whipped Cream" (the "Dating Game" theme song), "A Taste of Honey", "Spanish Flea", "Tijuana Taxi", "El Solo Toro (The Lonely Bull)" and showing off some fast horn work on "Zorba the Greek". That man could sure play the horn!!

Good old Herb Alpert! I played trumpet in grammar school, and he was one of my first musical "heroes" on the instrument.

My mom had several of his albums, and I played them frequently in the early '70s...moving on to more "mature" things like KISS once I hit my teens! I wouldn't mind having a "best of" compilation by him.

The album cover to "Whipped Cream And Other Delights" was quite intriguing, to say the least.

Couldn't stay away, eh, my optically challenged friend? At least with the mention of Herb Alpert there's a big difference from the other debates. Yep! The cover of "Whipped Cream" is an eye opener!

Summary of secular music thread:
Should Christians listen to secular music? "Yes." "No." "Yes." "No." Ad nauseum.

I like how you used the quotation marks around mature when referring to KISS. Still like them, though! They have definitely secured themselves a place in rock history. My son is even familiar with "Rock and Roll All Nite" because of Guitar Hero.

Oh, I'm staying away all right...notice how I'm not jumping back into the "secular is good/bad" debate! Just srtolling down memory lane with the Tiajuana Brass!

Now, about KISS: I was a member of the "KISS Army" up until I was about 15. Back then, they were the coolest band out there. The cover of the "Alive!" album was the epitome of cool!

Nowadays? I find them even more juvenile and smutty than AC/DC! (Bad lyrics are bad lyrics, but I'd rather hear Bon Scott sing them than KISS, if I must hear them at all!).

They do rock, and they do put on a good show, and they are, if anything, masters of marketing. The "Alive!" album...I think it was their best, and I could probably enjoy it nowadays at some level. Maybe a few songs here and there ("Detroit Rock City" comes to mind)

I think they were all about making money and having women, not making music / art that has any lasting value. At least that's what I heard Gene Simmons say.

OK, I'm off topic, so I'll stop here!

I listen to Mozart, Bach, Beethoven, Ligeti, Reich, Glass, Adams, Pärt, Berlioz, etc. and all of those classical music.

I also listen to Hillsong (partly coz it used to be my church when I was in Sydney).

So yeah, most of the music in the romantic period (Rachmaninoff, Chopin, Liszt, etc.) are secular but they are beautiful. I can't not listen to them!

Bach however, is a man of God. The music he wrote is always marked SDG (soli Deo gloria). I love Bach a lot! And him being a Christian is a big plus =D

I don't really like popular/rock songs, but I do like some Coldplay, Maroon5, those stuff... lol

I know I am breaking my own vows here but according to my ex wife, vows just aren't that important. Wesley! Validate your testimony, where can I look up what you've done, I beleive you when you say you sold your soul to the devil as we all probably have at some point and until we accepted Christ our soul was condemned anyway. But I know attorney's, ceo's and business owners that I could probably say the same thing about, selling their souls to get rich. (see "The Devils Advocate") Where have I heard your music? Did you get anywhere?

Sorry I haven't replied until now. I've been busy. My 2 year old son has been sick. Never was allowed by God to even record one track because I was meant to do Christian Hip Hop music. My life fell apart over the 9 months that I had walked with Satan. I lost 2 GOOD jobs, was in a car accident that should've taken my life (but by the grace of God I walked away without even a scratch), went to jail, lost my girl twice, and got eveicted from the apartment I was living in. After I got out of jail, I knew that this was the worst decision I made in my life. I had been nothing, but pounded by the one whom I sold my soul to. I was at my apartment one day and spoke to a friend of mine and decided to attend church. It wasn't long before I was crying out to God for forgiveness of what I had done. In the lust of the flesh I had sold my soul to the one who only wants to steal, kill, and destroy. I struggled for years and in the middle of a backslide I won tickets to a Godsmack and Metallica concert in Roanoke, VA through a local radio station. I went drinking the whole way. We got there on the "party bus" and got into the building. I was having a good time, but in between bands things changed. Tha same voice of Satan that said "I'm going to kill you when I get the chance," was now saying in the most arrogant tone I've ever heard, "Come back to me and lead my army." It hit me that he(Satan) knew that God had called me to lead an army of His people and so he was making a last ditch effort to try to stop me. God was allowing it to take place so I could choose whom I would serve. I looked around at all of the people in this place, thousands of people, and realized that most of them were on the highway to hell. My eyes were finally opened to what life is really about and that's Christ dying for the sins of the world. From that point, until this day, my life has continued to change for the better. I was soon delivered completely from drugs and alcohol, walking towards my destiny in Him ever since. It hasn't always been easy and I haven't always done things right, but He's been with me every step of the way. Now my music glorifies Him and Him alone. I recorded 3 tracks that were put on a mixtape called "Global Takeover Vol. 1". The friend who put it together handed out 150 copies at the Holy Hip Hop Conference in the ATL 3 years ago. I lied dormant after that until about 3 months ago. Now I have enough material to record an album. I'm waiting for the one track that's going to be the anthem for HHH. When that hits me, it's a wrap. Peace and God bless everybody.

My prayers go with you WesleyGlenn. May the Holy Spirit give you all the gifts to continue your walk (more like a mountainous hike) with Him. Good luck in your musical ventures.

It's pretty simple to me. Would Jesus listen to this music with you?

It seems a lot of you are saying "well, I'd never get to hear this genre, or this certain artist, or I just wouldn't listen to a lot of radio if all I had to listen to is Christian music." It appears that if this is your reasoning, a lot of you aren't ready to be Christians.

"I listen to whatever I want." If you think this attitude or response is pleasing to our King, you need to think again.

Rodney, what you need to consider is that for many of us,
quote:

I listen to whatever I want
means -- specifically -- I listen to good, wholesome music. Most of us don't listen to raunchy junk-music!

YES! I listen to whatever I want.

As a craftsman, I'm sure Jesus had an appreciation for anything that was well made. So yeah, I think He'd love to sit with me and check out some Genesis, or Yes, or Benny Goodman, or Glenn Miller, or the Beatles, or any of the other masterful musicians that crowd my collection. Because I don't think He's all that concerned with putting everything into neat little categories and pigeonholes. If a song is well crafted I think He'd enjoy it. Might shake His head in wonderment that the author hasn't chosen to follow Him (yet), but He'd still know a good product when He heard it.

superb spin, however, i'm sure you missed your mark.

the bible is very plain that we are put here on this earth to praise God with all that we have and all that we are. anything less than that is not something, I'm sure, Jesus would want to "sit and check out."
