There are too many to list (both in the Old and the New Testament) that command us to "fear" the Lord, which as you likely know means to reverence Him or have an awesome respect for Him. Philippians also tells us to "work out our salvation with fear and trembling." And there are also verses (such as the two I listed above, in Romans and Galatians) that show how God wants us to call Him daddy. Abraham and the Apostles are called friends of God, and as co-heirs with Christ, we are His adopted brothers. There is a transcendence to God. However, there is also an intimacy. That is one of the key differences between our truth, and the falsehood of other religions.

Referring to Jesus--God the Son--as "dude," is simply and plainly disrespectful. I'll just say that in my walk I could never refer to Christ by such a name. I don't think the word could come out of my mouth to begin with and if they did I sure couldn't sleep at night. I cannot imagine calling the creator of the Heavens dude and I sure can’t envision calling God by such a name which is exactly what is occurring. Bob

ORIGINAL: Kat_D I hate it! There is a movement in Christianity today that likes to bring Jesus Christ down to a base, human level, and if you hadn't figured it out by my first sentence, yes, it offends me. Jesus is not your "Homey," "Dude," "Main Man/Squeeze" or the "Big Guy," as I've heard Him called before. He is the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords and He died for your sins and gave you eternal life and as such He is worthy and deserves our utmost honor and respect. If you were meeting with the CEO of your company or the President of the United States would you address either one of them as "Dude?" Not likely. How much more respect do we owe our Lord and Savior? Exactly! IMO, this makes Jesus common. He died a hideous death on the cross for us. Where do we get the idea that we can just treat Him as though He was a common man? I could write a post to take up all of cyberspace about the Creator of Life and never once use words such as "Dude," "Phat boy," etc. I'm flabbergasted that there are Christians don't view this as a lack of respect!

ORIGINAL: Consecrated2God I'd be interested in knowing why he did that. If that's the way he really prays, and it's just part of his natural language and he is not meaning any disrespect, than it would be understandable. If he was trying to shock people, I wouldn't think it was a good enough reason to do that. I don't know if he was trying to shock people or not. There are times when he does talk that way. I've never heard him talk that way behind the pulpit or in Bible study.

We are the bride of Christ. Now, stop and think about that for a moment. We are His wife. We are His body, and He is our head. There is incredible, unthinkable intimacy between us as believers and Christ. And through that, we have an intimacy with the Father, through the Son, by means of the Spirit. It is that Spirit which allows/makes us call God the Father our daddy. I don't see the huge disrespect in genuinely using a term of familiarity that is true to who we are, as individuals, in addressing our Savior. I think Jesus is much more interested in our prayers being in line with His name (which I use in the biblical sense to imply the full moral character of the person) than in the specific titles we choose to address Him with.

Common- because it can be used to address anyone. Show me in the Bible where it is acceptable to address God as we would another human being? Check out Genesis 18. Abraham is "reasoning" with God. Abraham admits to being nothing more than dust and never forgets that he is talking to the Almighty God. Were Abraham and God friends? I think they were. The Psalms are full of praising, expressions of anger, love, etc. David, Solomon, Heman, Ethan, Moses and others express all of these emotions and never refer to God in a common way.

I think referring to Jesus as "dude" further promotes a hippy image.

While the term itself doesn't bother me, I wouldn't address our savior by that name. In attempt to gain intimacy do we lose reverence if we're not careful?

In all honesty, I don't see how referred to Christ in such a rude manner would promote intimacy with Him.

Show me in the Bible where it is acceptable to address God as we would another human being? I have, in Romans and Galatians. Unless you wouldn't feel it appropriate to call your earthly father "daddy," and feel that term should also refer to God alone. Also, this is somewhat weaker given that it is a term of authority, but "Elohim" is not used for God alone. It was a word used commonly for other spiritual beings and earthly, human rulers. So whenever that word is used for God, it is a word used to address Him as one might another human being - albeit, in this case, a ruler. Also, Jesus was (and in some parts of the world, still is) a very common name. Truth be told, if we were taking things literally, we would be calling Him Joshua Christ, but we don't, for whatever reason (not that I have any problem with the name Jesus, of course. Obviously not. I'm just pointing out that, at the time, it was not an uncommon name). quote:
Check out Genesis 18. Abraham is "reasoning" with God. Abraham admits to being nothing more than dust and never forgets that he is talking to the Almighty God. Were Abraham and God friends? I think they were. That's one instance. There are literally years of Abraham's life that we have no record of. So, 1, we are so far removed from that culture and time period that I don't know if we would recognize an equivalent to our modern "dude," and 2, if we begin assuming that because an action is never recorded in an narrative means that we shouldn't do it, then we should follow the example of Christ and never eat fruits and vegetables (unless there's a passage I'm forgetting - I know He tried to eat figs one time, but that didn't go so well for the tree). Or take after the Apostle Paul and travel places only by foot or boat. quote:
The Psalms are full of praising, expressions of anger, love, etc. David, Solomon, Heman, Ethan, Moses and others express all of these emotions and never refer to God in a common way. The Psalms serve a unique purpose. They are not an exclusive guide to prayer, nor are they an exclusive guide to worship. To me, the one most important rule in terms of worship, which was coming and is now come, is to worship God in spirit and in truth. If we pray to and worship God in a fake way, a way that we are "putting on" to be accepted by those around us, then I would say we are breaking that rule. And to me, if someone says "dude," or "great Lord Messiah God, creator of heaven and earth, alpha and omega, beginning and end, first and last, perfect and spotless lamb slain before the foundation of the world, etc." without having the truth of their own hearts behind it, then they are in the wrong. But if their hearts are true, if they are saying what they do and it is not expressly and obviously shown by Scripture that God would not be pleased with it, then who are we to call them wrong? quote:
In attempt to gain intimacy do we lose reverence if we're not careful? Obviously there must be a balance - but it's just that, a balance. You cannot sacrifice one at the expense of the other. Children are close and intimate with their fathers (or they should be - sadly, that is more and more uncommon in this age), but they still hold them in reverence. To the young child, daddy is Superman and what he says goes, but he's also there to tuck them in at night and kiss them on the forehead. If either of these are lost, a false view of fatherhood (and through this, masculinity in general) is likely to be created in the child's mind. In the same way, if we disregard either aspect of our relationship with God, we get a mixed up view. Either too soft or too hard. Neither is good, and neither is true. quote:
In all honesty, I don't see how referred to Christ in such a rude manner would promote intimacy with Him. The fact that you say it is rude makes it clear that you should not refer to Him in that manner. However, it is not rude for everyone. Personally, I wouldn't either - not because I think it's universally wrong, but because I just don't talk that way. The only time I say "dude," is when I'm joking around. But for some people, it's real and genuine. It's who they are. For them, "dude" is a term of closeness and affection used for their friends and others they trust. quote:
not to mention that I never heard that Jesus had a hippy image...that's a first! You should check out Godspell. ; ) *edited to add that whole 2nd half there, since it replies to posts made after I started writing mine. Also, corrected minor spelling issues*

then we should follow the example of Christ and never eat fruits and vegetables (unless there's a passage I'm forgetting Just a quick note -- He came back and ate fish and honey after being ressurected! Also -- of course Jesus has a hippy image! Was that sarcasm back there? Long hair, sandals, duh. I'm joking tho, but some people would picture a bandana tied around his head, throwing up the peace sign. If that's a valid image, we would have to say he was "trippin" when he turned the tables of the dovesellers over in the temple. So, yeah, maybe dude is a term meaning "friend," maybe it has some bad connotations. Should we refer to Jesus as "friend?" Perhaps we should try to think of ourselves as "contemporary" with Christ -- as if WE are being called just as the Apostles were -- rather than making Him contemporary with us. What would Jesus do? Well, probably walk around calling people individually, dine with sinners, create somewhat of a disturbance for the self-righteous, and get killed while His disciples sit around denying Him. It's not that hard to figure out. Would he drive a Prius? Please. I mean, dude, c'mon.

I think that we ought to use more reverential language when refering to the MASTER, I would have been offended.

I don't think I would be offended. I'm trying to think if I've ever prayed "dude" and I don't think I have. However, I pretty much pray out loud all day long and I wouldn't be surprised if it slipped out. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of stuff slipped out, frankly. God knows what is in our hearts and what our needs are before we pray and I believe He expects us to communicate with Him on our own level.

He wouldn't allow us to watch that movie because it was an insult to Christianity. I still have never seen it. My sister, an agnostic, says that this a problem because it gives the idea that Christians really don't care that much about a God that they claim to love and respect. I will continue her train of thought HERE.

If it's an exclamatory "dude..." then that would be sorta weird for me, but not sacreligious. Was it used in that way or was it used like Jesus is a dude. Totally different concept. As in Jesus is not the effeminate man portrayed in much of Christian artwork today with the soft hair, blue eyes and powder blue clothing. He is not the romance novel book cover with the windblown hair and ruffled shirt thing going on. At least NOT my Jesus , My Savior, King of Kings and Lord of Lords.

Ah, Dude, Home Boy, My Man, Guy in the Sky, Man Upstairs, Good Ole Boy, Old Man, Superstar, Yo, and for the more progressive... Dudette, Home Girl, Good Ole Gal, Gal Upstairs, Gal in the Sky, Old Gal, ... and for those who think God is genderless let them make up their own titles. What's it all matter anyway? I mean, can't we call Him whatever we darn well please? After all, no one can see my heart but me. All this judging in the church. Heavendweller

I can use the "f" word in casual conversation, in order to "become all things to all men." So, my intentions in this case aren't wrong. All this big deal about mere words. Bah! Who cares? And some children call their fathers "dude" or "hey you" or "yo" or "home boy" or "old man" or by their first name, especially if they have a close relationship with them. Calling your parents "mother" or "father" is out of vogue these days. So traditional, old fashioned, and all that. quote:
The fact that you say it is rude makes it clear that you should not refer to Him in that manner. However, it is not rude for everyone. But for some people, it's real and genuine. It's who they are. For them, "dude" is a term of closeness and affection used for their friends and others they trust. Yeah, what's true for me isn't necessarily what's "true" for you. Truth cannot always be boiled down to some tangible, absolute concept. Man, I know people who believe that God speaks to them in the breeze, or when they meditate on a tree, or when they focus on a flower. Who am I to say differently? After all, God can and does speak through His creation. With that said, I don't need to go to church, cuz God is more evident in His creation than in church, where all that gossip and judging goes on anyway. Why do we narrow truth down to our own concepts. Ya know, if I wanna call Jesus my Guru, what's wrong with that? Why I know some folks who call Jesus their "Spirit Guide" and they mean that with all sincerity. So who am I to judge them for that if their hearts are in the right place? Words are meaningless. It is the intent of the heart that only matters. quote:
You should check out Godspell. ; ) Wow! Now that Jesus really freaked me out at first. But then I decided that my head was in the wrong place, ya know? And so when I got down with that concept of Jesus, I thought, yeah man, far out. Jesus in a Superman outfit. Now how cool is that? Now that's a Jesus I can relate to! Ya know, on my level, not some pie in the sky man way out there. We need to free our minds and let go of our inhibitions about what we think is right. Free your minds and you will be surprised at what God can show you. It's like having the death clothes fall off of ya and bein' unshackled for real, man. Heavendweller
