quote:
Does anyone include the "family" during times of getting together? Most of the times we get together families are included. quote:
And if the kids are 12 and older, can they be included in what the adults are doing? For us, once they turn thirteen they are included in what the adults are doing. A couple of times a month they gather but that is on Saturday nights-not during service time. The only time any of the children leave service is during the sermon-then they go to class and when class is over they come back into the service. The thirteens and up no longer have class during sermon-they are expected to sit and listen to the sermon with the rest of us. And they are welcome to join in the adult study classes. The women do secret sisters and again, once a young adult turns thirteen they are included in the secret sisters-if they want to be, of course. We do not separate the teens out into their own little group. All the names are put in for the drawing and you get who you get. So sometimes a woman will get a teen or a teen will get a woman.

When my FIL was alive, we would go up at Christmas to visit him. He lived in a place that was amost entirely summer residents, and most of the churches up there were open *only* during the summer. It took several tries before we found a church that was open year-round. I thought that was strange, but apparently some of the churches are just for summer residents. (To give you an idea of how few people are there year-round--at one time there were *four* school-aged children, and a bus from a larger town would come pick them up.) Anyway, I have been in small churches where lots of the stuff other than services shut down for the summer. It just didn't make sense to prepare for something and find out that everyone was gone that week. We always had larger, family-type things going on, but not age-specific things. In larger churches, it isn't an issue, usually.

I didn't even think about the vacation spots that would also have a church...good point.

Yes it's a word, and my spell checker didn't like it either and suggested "coagulants" as a substitute.

*You* are the church. If you want to have a small group going during the summer, let your pastor know that you'd like to sponsor one -- and there'll be a small group during the summer! :-) Your OP sounds a bit like you're complaining, that you're not very trusting of your church leadership. That's no good. You really should try to be more grateful for them, to trust that there are good reasons for this summer schedule. Sunday School is nice, but isn't really necessary, in my opinion. It's not biblical, though I don't think it's necessarily wrong. But it isn't required by Scripture. What's accomplished in Sunday School is the responsibility of parents; they're free to delegate that to other members of their church, though. I guess I'm just saying that nobody should be indignant that volunteers aren't available during the summer to teach your children the things you're ultimately responsible for teaching them.

Wow, I didn't know that there are churches that pretty much close up shop ... sounds like that would really give the devil and opportunity to cause some havok. I know our church schedule does get a little lighter in the summer. For instance instead of having 4 scouting type classes for kids we have one childrens service on wednesday's, but Sunday's remain the same. Attendance of course drops in the summer with people traveling but Church goes on.

Most things keep running in our church during the summer but some may change. SS still goes on Jr church is only in the 2nd service in the summer Most small groups still meet but it's up to the group Men's prayer breakfast still meets youth group still meets but it's fun stuff instead of a Bible study The children's program meets once a month during the school year but takes off in July and August We don't have Sunday night or Wed services. Jr church is only for kids through K so other children are in the church service. In our small group the kids are with us while we eat but not for our study or whatever we do. I think this is good. There are things that adults might need/want to talk about that the kids don't need to hear. This is our time to discuss issues in our adult lives without the kids around. Our church strives to develop community both across the age groups (5th sunday lunches, church picnic, worship service) but also within age groups: monthly elementary group called PRovidence Kids, youth group, small group fellowships, ladies events, mens prayer breakfast, etc. I know in Providence Kids the emphasis this year has been on community and how they are a sub-community of the big community of our church. This program involves between 12-20 kids from K-5th grade. Our youth group is called CREW: Caring, Relationships, Evangalism, Worship and all 4 are elements of their program which meets on Sunday nights and occasional other times but it never keeps them out of other family time events: like worship service except for the couple times a year they go on a weekend retreat. While our church strives to build communities among age groups and genders it is also careful to develop communities and the whole Community involving the whole family.

That's no good. You really should try to be more grateful for them, to trust that there are good reasons for this summer schedule. We actually have a church plant within the Acts29 Network. We are in pre-launch and will officially kick-off January 2009. However, I have many friends who attend elsewhere and expressed an interest in joining us for the summer. We had to make it clear that we are still a church plant and not just a summer group, but they would always be welcomed without agenda or expectation. I also read this over the weekend from Nelson Searcy. It's an article about Summer Small Groups and he has some really good ideas and points. I don't think that every point is valid for every church, but good to know information as a whole.
