Hello,
Well, I have started to get into the world of fiddling. I've been looking for places to play, and people to play with....well, I got an e-mail from a lady who is looking for a fiddler to play in this local region. The thing is though, she asked if I had a problem playing in places that serve alcohol, also, it would be basically a country band.
Would any of that compromise my witness? I know bars aren't in and of themselves a sin, but flee from all appearance of evil.
Amd I being legalistic? Am I being paranoid? What are your thoughts, thanks.
God Bless,

That's kind of a toughy... it's one thing to play in a place where alchohol is served, but kind of another to play in a bar. Have you asked your parents what they think?

violinist_for_jesus -> RE: I am divided....help (6/19/2008 9:24:05 PM)

No, I just got the e-mail, but playing in places where they serve alcohol, would open up a lot more places for me to play. Regardless if it's a bar or not.

^i would talk to the rents as well as a pastor/other christian mentor of yours. of course, pray. it does wonders.
i would personally would do it, because i'm not tempted by alcohol - i like to get out of my "comfort zone" and show my love for Jesus; i also belive today that if you want to touch other lives in our society you're going to have to talk to these types of people.
i hope things work for you - i'll be praying!

Yeah, that's true... I know for me, personally, I wouldn't play in a bar. The people that hang around the bar downtown... well, they just frighten me. But y'know, it all comes down to personal convictions. You just have to figure out where you stand.

I know a drummer. He's been playing for the majority of his life, but only a few years in churches since becoming a Christian. A while ago, he got invited to play with a secular band during a community festival. These people that he played with smoked, drank, and I don't know what all, but needless to say, they weren't a positive influence on his faith.

He's back playing in church now, but that brief stint messed with him spiritually. Thankfully I was able to be there and help him back to his senses.

You have to have a wide outlook on the people you're playing with and the music. Ask yourself:
"Are these people going to a positive or negative influence on my Christian faith?"
"Is the music we'll be playing going to honor Christ in some way?"
More importantly, ask yourself, "Am I spiritually mature enough to handle a situation that would otherwise damper my faith?"

well maybe it is good to play where there r non-christians because u would try to witness to others wouldnt u?

I voted yes. I see nothing wrong with alcohol and therefore playing in places that serve it. It'd be pretty tough trying to play somewhere that does (I mean, that kinda rules out pretty much all restaurants and hotels) It would be a good witness to other people if they asked you about yourself. Just stick to your standards, don't drink (other than soft drinks & water of course) until it's legal for you (and if you choose to). Speak with your parents and if they're all OK with it then go for it, it's a great opportinity. And if they do have reservations, respect them, ask them why and perhaps compromise and let one of them 'chaperone' you (i.e. sit there and watch/listen you while you do your thing)

Zach, my friend, I'm more concerned that you would be playing country music. Ick. Haha!

But seriously, I don't think it's such a good idea. I wouldn't see a problem with you playing in a restaurant that serves alcohol, because you can get a beer anywheres nowadays. But playing in a bar is a completely different thing. For many people, if they see you walking into a bar even with a violin case in hand, their first thought would either be that you're going to get yourself drunk, or you're hiding a small machine gun in the case and you plan on shooting everyone up like ya see in old mob movies. haha! If it were me, I wouldn't want to give anyone a reason to think that I was doing something wrong. We're supposed to be ambassadors for Christ (so no country music!!! [8D]), and taking the chance on staining your witness even though you weren't doing anything wrong isn't something I think to be very wise.

you watch too many old mob movies

_MavericK_ -> RE: I am divided....help (6/20/2008 10:32:22 PM)

I really think it depends on the situation. Because you can have a setting like a nice restaurant where they serve wine or a full-out bar. Listen to your conscience.

amymelissa -> RE: I am divided....help (6/21/2008 8:24:42 PM)

I have to say I disagree with think it's fine to play in a bar. If you walk in, violin case in hand, I think it's pretty obvious that you're going to play, and most people can't do that drunk so you're pretty safe there. I suppose it's really up to what your heart is telling you, but I don't see a problem with it.

_MavericK_ -> RE: I am divided....help (6/22/2008 11:05:59 PM)

i didnt say it was fine to play in a bar. i was making a contrast.[&:]

slushie -> RE: I am divided....help (6/23/2008 11:35:21 AM)

I think it's ok, if you don't struggle with alcohol - and you know your limits. For some people that would be a temptation, but not for others. It depends.

I have some good friends in a band called Forget the Girl... they play in bars and that's their way to witness to others.

Ask God, ask your parents what they think.

If you walk in with a fiddle, then I think it would be pretty obvious that you're going to play, and of course the person who hired you or the bartender or whoever would know that fact.

Snoopyroxmysox -> RE: I am divided....help (6/23/2008 4:18:44 PM)

No it would not hurt you witness if you played in a place where people serve alchohol what would hurt your witness was if you got drunk. I think this is a good way to minister to people about God.
I'll be praying for you and I hope that you make the right decision. God bless you![sm=angel.gif]

EternalGamer -> RE: I am divided....help (6/25/2008 7:36:50 PM)

First off, I would ask your parents for advice. Then I would pray about it. Remember, Jesus didn't only teach the followers of God, he taught drunkards and prostitutes as well as the most religious Jews. But like Randy said, you should make sure that you are spiritually mature enough to play in places that sell alchohol. And I've noticed that some people have been referring to bars. According to Zachary, the e-mail simply said place that said alchohol, so it might just be a restaraunt or diner.

Another piece of advice, bring a Christ-centered friend with you. Find a friend who you can trust to have your back in a pinch. You might even bring a parent or a group of friends to be there for you.

But if feel uneasy about the place or you feel any temptations, don't be afraid to leave. And remember that whatever you do, do it in Christ's name.

Good luck.
