Why do they have to put a teeny sticker on every piece of fruit in the produce section? They are annoying, and when you try to peel them, a piece of the skin comes off with the sticker!

Because that sticker has the SKU on it, and alot of times the cashiers have NO clue what kind of produce they are holding.

are you talking about the dole stickers or the sku ones?
Ryanne is right, the cashiers often don't know what they are and you are supposed to be fast if you are a cashier.

Of course there's also often several kinds of a type of produce at different prices. For examply there might be 3-4 different types of tomato that you can't necessarily tell apart. Also in this day with self checkouts and scales where you can print your own price sticker it's important since the customer needs to know those numbers.

That is annoying, but it does tell the cashier what kind of produce it is. Wish they had that when I worked at a grocery store!

I love those stickers! Why? Because they (the PLU #) can tell you a bit about what you're buying...
"The codes are based on four-digit numbers for conventional produce, to which an extra digit is added to indicate organic or GM status. If the number is five digits beginning with a 9, then the item is organic. If the item is five digits beginning in 8, then it is a genetically modified crop.
For example, the PLU code for bananas is 4011. If the PLU sticker on the banana bunch reads 94011, then they are organic bananas. If the PLU sticker reads 84011, then the bananas are a genetically modified variety."

That's really funny... I thought it was only weird people like me who knew about plu codes ~ I was a produce manager.

I'd made it slightly more difficult to sort because I'd eaten about half the 'cherries' as I was looking at my receipt!

I knew bananas were 4011. I think green beans are 4066 right? Our stores have the scales where you can put in the code and put a price on it before you check out and I always do it.

I find if I rinse the fruit in warm water as opposed to cold, the sticker comes off without damaging the skin. I always give it a quick cool water rinse after that.

I know that Gala apples are 4135 lol. I buy them *every* grocery shopping trip. It's always an interesting look on the cashiers face when they are looking for the sticker and I say, "Oh, it's 4135"

I think that bananas was the first code I learnt, then white seedless grapes, 4022 and red seedless was 4023. The cashiers used to get things muddled up so I'd take lines we didn't have off they system to help them, then get complaints that peaches (or whatever) wasn't scanning. I'd smile and point out that we hadn't been selling peaches for a number of weeks and suggest they try nectarines!

I wish they had that when I worked in a grocery store too. I had a flip chart that i had to memorize.

I'm much less worried about the skin of the fruit than I am about the stickers that leave the glue behind! The sticker comes off easily, but there is residue. and I usually have to get a knife to cut it off.

That stinks! The main thing they stick to is bell peppers, and we eat a fair amount of those. Some produce doesn't have it...cashiers are always asking me what veggies I have because they don't recognize them and there aren't stickers.
