OK . . . a question for people who are suggesting white vinegar. I use white vinegar on windows and mirrors . . . y'all believe that it will be safe to use on soft plastic?

I bought an incredible antique photo album at a garage sale once. It was full of tin types. the cover was so dirty that you could barely see what it was. I cleaned it with a solution of 3 parts water and 1 part vinegar with a soft cloth, and it took all the grim off (I think they smoked) It was a beautiful picture of 2 little girls.
I am convinced it won't hurt them, though I would not soak them in anything for a long period of time, but you could try a couple in the kitchen sink if you are uneasy about it. This method could go pretty quickly too if you use the (very) soft paint brush to get the grim off. My other suggestion is to call someone who deals in such things (antique toys dealer?) and ask them the best way to clean them.

What about breaking up the job into smaller pieces.

Take one box....clean them....photograph them....enter on ebay....sell...ship. Then start on another box. That way your efforts are paying off as you go instead of doing ALL the work up front.

Once people realize what you have some toy collector MIGHT offer to purchase the lot. Have you researched toy collectors ? Have any idea what the total lot is worth ?

Have you followed on Ebay what is selling ? Is there a clean vs as is condition ?

Sounds like you could become a power seller on Ebay with the amount you have.

As to cleaning....find a mild detergent....some probably could be washed in dishwasher or bathtub.

I know re finishing furniture is a no no & will devalue the piece if it is really old.

I'm not so sure about the bleach, though . . . Have you noticed paint coming off or anything like that when you wash your kids toys

I haven't....but most of the toys we have are solid colored toys (legos, etc) where the color is in the plastic, not painted on top of it.

and hey, if you are paying for the trip then I would be in PF again tomorrow!!!!!

Well . . . while I won't be pay for the trip, I will be paying for all the washcloths . . . so come on down! PLUS . . . I'll even feed ya!
You can't beat a deal like that!

LOL...if I could you know I would be there. I wouldn't even have to convince hubby...at least once he week he brings up the whole "I wish we lived in PF/Sev again" or the "I miss Dollywood" discussion...lol. Too bad there isn't an Army post there.

. . . Well, I've just spent the past 1.75 hours going through 1.5 boxes.

I decided to test some toys in warm water with Dawn dish soap.

So far, so good; nothing's been damaged . . . Although, some of the grime requires something else other than a soaking . . . so I've been using a paper towel sprayed with Goo Gone on those buggers.

The vast majority of the figurines that I've tested have been "soft plastic" . . . so I'm guessing that this method won't hurt the hard plastic figurines neither.

Jackie, I had originally thought of doing it like you suggested . . . a box at a time; but I decided that I really need to have all the toys cleaned and photograph before I put any of them on eBay. One of the reasons why is that if a toy collector does contact me, I want to be able to have my entire inventory available for viewing, at the same time. The other reason is that in addition to the eBay auctions, I am also planning on doing an eBay store in conjunction with the auction . . . again, having the complete inventory for viewing at one time would be more beneficial, I believe . . . both for my customers and also for me.

Thank y'all for all y'all's suggestions; I really appreciate it!

Christi . . . maybe you and GB could come over and help me clean them.
Doesn't that sound like fun?!

I was thinking whenever we pick a day to come over for a cookout that we could help you then (if you're still working on them, that is).
Oh my word!

That's a very sweet offer, Christi . . . but when y'all come over for a cookout, the ONLY person who is going to be doing any work will be

your hubby.

Hey Mr. Zmanfan38!

I SOOOO laughed out loud just now!!!

He's asleep, but I'll show him this tomorrow.

Sometimes I think I should just put them all in the garbage or on the curb

ACK!!!

My heart skipped thinking of the Peanuts Gang stuff in your trash.

But, I knew better.

But, of course!

Me? Throw away the Peanuts Gang?? Pshaw!

BTW, Didjya get a chance to tell your hubby about my post to him?

Y'all . . . have been so nice in helping me with suggestions on how to clean toys.

The Dawn soap seems to be doing the trick (with some periodic sprays of goo gone).
However, there's some toys that seem to get almost worse with that. I'm convinced it has to do with what kind of plastic the toy was made out of because some are hardly dirty at all; some clean off very well and some are just kinda icky to touch (and all the icky ones "feel" the same, material-wise).

BUT! I'm getting it done.

Y'all should see my kitchen counters though . . . and the rest of the house; already, it looks like a toy factory or two has exploded. LOL

Which brings me to the next phase of this project . . . identifying some of them

If anyone is interested in helping me identify some of the toys, please click HERE.

Thank so much!

If it's just dust, and not in with grease I'd hook up a air hose to the air compressor, and blow away. As I have worked with collectibles the older soft plastic, painted items I'd stay with a soft cloth, and mild detergent like dish soap - even that may take off the paint - if that is happening stop and just take a feather duster. Since you're selling a couple of suggestions 1.) Sell as you go. You may clean them all and then they'll be dirty all over again. 2.) You may consider selling in bulk - clean or not find buyers at Mister Find IT And by selling as you go, you'll know what you have, and it won't seem so over whelming - inch by inch anything is a sinch.

Oh, um...yes I did. He thought that was a very generous offer of his time.
