um, every snorer that I've ever encountered knew that they were guilty of it. =) They also knew how "bad" it was relatively speaking. I do agree though, that if excessive snoring is an issue, a sleep study is a great thing. My hubby has sleep apnea, and a c-pap machine.

ORIGINAL: DenimDiva What are some of the best - and healthiest - means that you use to get a good night's sleep? I'm a recovering night owl/insomniac, yet, I don't have any real advice. I don't recommend sleep medication. A medical doctor was said to deny the effectiveness of the medication, and continued to say, "we really don't know what it does". That doesn't sound like something I want in my system. Counting things works for some. It's good practice for the mental mind, too. In areas such as visualization and memory. I don't have the patience for it, though. Listening to music is soothing for some, too. I've tried it. It sometimes helps. I typically have the television on at night. Any form of sound in the background does help me. Like the sound of a ceiling fan. I have a hard time sleeping without something going. I've heard doctors recommend getting up, going outside in the morning for at least an hour. This allows your eyes to digest the sun, which will progress your state of awakeness. It also helps reset your biological clock. You'll naturally want to go to sleep earlier than before.

A sleep center can ask some questions that are a pre-screening that would give some idea as to whether it is worth pursuing. I have heard myself snore. No to the other questions. This really isn't about why I have trouble sleeping. I know the reasons why I can't sleep. It's about what non-medicinal ways that people like to use to get themselves to sleep better.

It's the genre you need to be careful with when reading books (as with tv programmes etc), not reading in itself. When you are getting ready to go to bed, you should be trying to slow your brain down, not keep it active. Murder-mysteries will stimulate the brain (because you'll be trying to work out what happens next etc.

ORIGINAL: Calea37 One thing I had read about it too was that it *can* cause depression, so if you are prone to that you may want to be careful. I won't be able to use it then! Roberta, I use melatonin when I am desparate for a natural sleep. I have issues with depression, but melatonin is a natural substance that your body already makes. It does work although I will admit that sometimes when I take it, I have nightmares. You are not going to know if it is going to work for you unless you try it. I know people who have taken it and it works like a charm, and there are others who have had nightmares, and as for the depression, my psych doc actually told me to take it instead of meds if I didn't want the meds. So if I were you and you are desparate for sleep that is natural, try it if none of the above mentioned things work for you. You can buy it in 1mg tablets and start out with one, and work up to 3 or 4 if it is working for you. Walgreens also sells it and it is pretty cheap. The pharmicist can even tell you which brand is better and answer your questions about that and depression. I don't remember seeing this up there, but if you have lavandar essential oil or body wash or something lavandar, that smell really does help. If you have the essential oil, a few drops on your pillow case are awesome. As for YOU sleeping, my only suggestion is giving eveybody in the house tickets to a 7:00 movie and springing for the popcorn, soda, and a trip to the ice cream shop afterwards. Oh, and I forgot about the really good book for you.

Ok Roberta, I can't sleep tonight so you are not alone. At least for now.
