Thanks Manda and Sarah! We are mainly nursing. I only pump enough for the night time bottle b/c dh likes to do that feeding. It's not really necessary for me anymore since he goes from 10pm to 6am without eating (too bad he doesn't sleep through), but dh wants to do it. I'm actually usually pumping while he's giving him the night time bottle.

if you are pumping then yes it could be that you are losing your supply. Even pumping once a day can be detrimental to some women's supply's. If you don't have to pump then I wouldn't recommend doing it. Let your hubby find something else to do with the baby, and you nurse every time. After all, you said that he doesn't eat all night anyway, so it's not like you need him to feed a bottle so you can sleep.

quote:

Sorry to keep asking, but just to clarify... if he is going 4 hours between feedings (and 8 hours at night) my body should be able to produce more milk for those feedings if he needs it? Or will he need to eat more often if he needs more?

IF you are completely bfing on demand then your body should produce what he needs when he needs it. When you add pumping in there then it gets all messed up though and your body can decide to just not be in sync anymore. Pumping is not the same as bfing....the baby's saliva helps your body regulate what the breast milk needs...and some women are so sensitive to that that even one pumping and not nursing a day can kill their bfing.

Saw the LC last night. She said I was doing good and gave me a new goal of greater than 750ml. I hit it the day before yesterday, but didnt yesterday...however yesterday was a bad day for me emotionally and I was having some very discouraging thoughts. She said to just work up to those 8 pumpings and assured me I was doing good. We were going to to a breastmilk swab, where they swab his mouth with milk, the first step in feeding him. But the medicine he is on for his heart can upset their stomach so we are going to wait until thats all through with...the last dose was last night so we are hopeful to start feedings next week. I got a hands free pumping system and it is great, make a world of difference in my pumping sessions, I feel more relaxed and less rushed than when I have to sit and hold the things on.

David drinks around 36 ounces a day. I was pumping around 28 ounces a day but the last few days I have only been able to get 20. My pumping schedule and diet are the same. What could be making my supply go down? (I pump but do not nurse. I supplement with formula.)

Is his intake of formula increasing? Have you tried decreasing your pumping and putting him directly on the breast? Putting him on the breast could help increase your supply...

He was getting 28 oz of breast milk and 8 oz of formula a day. Since I have only been able to pump 20 oz I have been giving him that plus 16 oz of formula. The amount he is eating hasn't changed. He is still eating 9 4 oz bottles a day. The only difference is that he was getting 7 BM bottles and 2 F bottles and now he is getting 5 BM bottles and 4 F bottles.

I only put him to the breast when he is really upset. He will nurse for comfort but not to eat. When I try to nurse him when he is hungry he screams. I think the flow isn't fast enough for him. He has a bad latch and we are both still dealing with thrush so nursing is extremely painful. I have had 2 midwives, a LLL leader, and a LC try to help but we just can't figure out how to nurse without a lot of pain.

Ah I understand...I think your supply is probably decreasing because you're supplementing more with the formula to make up the 'difference'. Have you tried putting him to the breast after you pump? That will increase your supply as well. You could also start taking fenugreek or drinking pineapple juice.

I take fenugreek, alfalfa, nettles, blessed thistle, and marshmallow root. I try to pump more to get more but I have to give him more formula or he will be hungry. At this point I am kind of scared to put him to the breast because it hurts so much. I only do it when he is screamiing and really upset and can't be comforted other ways.

I would go and get some pineapple juice too. How long have you had the thrush? Are you using the lanolin before and after everytime you try and nurse him? Nursing is painful at first until your breasts get used to the sucking and pressure from a baby's mouth.

I use lanolin before and after every time I try to nurse and occasionally when I pump.. David will be 8 weeks old on Friday so we have had thrush off and on for almost 7 weeks. When I nurse my nipple end up smooshed flat with a hard ridge down the middle and cracked and bleeding. He gets so mad because I keep taking him off and trying to help him latch on right. After a while of him screaming because he is hungry and still not latching on right I give up. I have tried giving him an ounce of BM in a bottle first so he isn't still hungry but that doesn't work either.

I like pineapple. How much juice do I need to drink?

Had a brutal clogged milk duct for the past 2 days. But I finally was able to work it out today in the shower followed by a good feeding. Thank goodness!

Emily this may sound dense but.. why are you still dealing with thrush? I didn't think it would last this long?

It gets better for a little while but keeps coming back. I have tried lots of things (acidophilus, gentian violet, and RX cream for me and drops for him) and I am following all of the hygiene things like washing my shirts in hot water, changing my nursing pads frequently, boiling bottle and pump parts, etc. I don't know why it won't go away.

Have you had your pediatrician prescribe liquid Diflucan? Hunter had thrush when he was 2 months old and I did the Nystatin for longer than I should have, still didn't go away. So my pediatrician wrote a prescription for Hunter to have the liquid Diflucan and it cleared it right up. I continued to treat my nipples with what was left of the Nystatin as well.

Is he a binky (paci) baby? Are you sterilizing them at least once a day along with bottles?

We didn't use the liquid Nystatin. My midwife said it has a lot of sugar which helps the yeast thrive and won't kill it. He used the liquid Diflucan. I boil his pacifiers every night too.

Sometimes, with exclusive pumping you will lose your supply. It's just not the same stimulation as nursing, and several of the EP mom's I know slowly lose their supply until they are totally using formula. From my understanding, it's incredibly hard to EP and maintain a "full" supply.

Erin, are you taking any milk increasers?

I never really planned to be an exclusive pumper...things just happened that way. I really hope I can keep my supply up until he gets to at least try to nurse. Hopefully when he is off the vent we can at least do non-nutritive sucking.

No I am not taking any milk increasers...I need to see what I can find, but I havent had a chance to hunt for any supplements. I have been drinking pineapple juice though.

I got a nighttime pumping in last night!

Great you pumped last night Erin!

Fenugreek is usually sold at a place like GNC, I've never found it at a grocery store. GNC sells Mother's Milk tea too. You might be able to find a better deal using Froogle.com

Pineapple juice suppossedly increases your milk supply, I haven't heard it from anywhere but CW. All the herbs Emily takes are the ones my LC "prescribed".

Erin, if you start having supply issues then your best option might be to just order some Domperidone from Canada(via the internet). It was the only thing that I didn't try(which I regret, thinking back... oh well) when all the herbs+ reglan didn't work in the long run.

Isn't in illegal to order drugs from Canada?

I have also heard that drinking Gatorade helps, but it didn't do anything for me.

I heard the same thing about Gatorade, but I think it's because it keeps you hydrated, which is very important for supply.

One of my girls pediatricians recommended that I could use pineapple juice to help increase my supply when I was still nursing Jael. So...that's the source of my information.

To my understanding thrush isn't supposed to last that long. Have you cut out refined sugars from your diet? Are you still treating both your nipples and your son's mouth everyday? I agree with Chelle, that you should talk to your pediatrician again about the continuance of the thrush...

It sounds to me that because you've increased your formula supplementation that your milk supply is dwindling. Though I'm sure you know this, our bodies produce milk on demand...and if you're not demanding as much from it it's not going to make as much.
