You should be able to pump directly into the storage bottles and that's what I would recommend doing- otherwise your just adding an extra step and creating more stuff to wash. The Medela pump will attach to ANY standard size bottle.

Hey, they DO fit!!

The membranes do not need to be boiled right?

I think I almost have it figured out. I'm sure if I waited the LC at the hospital would help, but I'd like to try this out at home first.

I never boiled any of my parts, but with Isaac being so early and so little, I would boil them. The membranes... yep, I'd boil them because the milk definitely comes into contact with them. The tubes... nope, milk doesn't come into contact with them and they are a hassle and a half to get dry.

Yeah I just noticed that the membranes should be cleaned. Yea, since Isaac is so fragile I'm going to go ahead and boil them.

Erin -- don't think it, KNOW that every aspect of what is going on right now in your family (sleep, pumping, medical, your healing, Isaac's cold toes) is being prayed for.

Just wanted to encourage you. I am sure you KNOW the ladies here have been lifting you up in prayer 24x7 since hearing the news. Pumping will now be added to the list, and we haven't forgotten to pray for Klay either. How is he holding out, hon?

Klay is doing good. I was so proud of him...he was awesome. He keeps telling me how proud he is of me...which is SO unlike my husband. When we got to touch Isaac for a moment before he left, Klay was so afraid to touch him. It was sweet. Isaac acts just like him already though.

Thanks for everything ladies.

Pump parts are boiling and then we'll get this show on the road! I'm really excited because right now this is the only thing I can do for him...even though he cant have it yet, mommy is making Isaac milk and getting it all ready for him.

Aw, that's sweet about Klay!

And Erin -- you're doing PLENTY for him. More than you'll know. You are NOT just a milk-provider at this point -- you are his MOM. He owes you a lot, girl. You all hang in there!

Erin, I so agree with Jeanie on this! You are doing great at the mom thing. He needs YOU and you are doing great.

Glad to hear Klay is doing well, too, and that you guys are doing well together with all this stress!

Erin -- your baby's tummy is very tiny, so even a tiny bit will be a lot to him. That's great you have milk already! You'll probably get more as you pump more.

1/3 oz. is great for pumping for the very first time! All babies have tiny tummies, especially Isaac, so my guess is he may eat that much or maybe even less. To give you an idea of an AVERAGE, 1oz. of breastmilk for every 3 pounds of baby every 2 to 4 hours. That may be a different number for a premature baby though. Maybe ask the LC today to make sure.

He wont get the milk for a good while yet...probably a week or two at the least. But they are going to freeze it for him. I was just wondering if I got enough.

That is a very good amount of colostrum to be getting out this early...just keep pumping, every couple of hours for at least 20 min. a side and you'll be able to increase your supply. You could also start drinking pineapple juice and taking fenugreek to increase your supply once your milk actually comes in. It might also help to put a picture of your sweet baby in front of you when you're pumping as well as thinking thoughts of him while you are as well. That can help with let down. Hope that helps.

Blessings!

Kim

Erin

*Anything* you can pump is going to be absolutely wonderful for him, And whatever you are able to pump is "enough".

When my son was 4 days old, he contracted meningitis and had to be in the neo-natal unit. As wrecked as I was inside, I felt I had to pump for him as it was really the only thing I could do to help him. I wasn't able to pump much at all, but the nurses told me it was better than none at all, as it would boost his immune system.

It did.

He made a full recovery (though we didn't know for 2 years how full the recovery would be) - and the nurses say that it was mostly down to the breastmilk he had from me, even though it wasn't all he needed. What mattered was that he had some.

My little lad was only in the neo-natal unit for two weeks, and I know little Isaac is going to be in there for longer, so I appreciate it's harder for you. But I just wanted to encourage you that even what seems like tiny amounts will be invaluable for Isaac - a precious commodity.

Erin,

You will not pump much right now- just keep at it. My milk took three days to come in the first time- I would imagine that yours will take longer since you are pumping rather than "nursing". The colostrum is very sugary and babies don't usually eat/need much of it. Once your milk comes in, you will probably start getting more than an ounce, but he is soooo tiny, that small amounts will be good for him. Stick with it, think baby thoughts, relaxing thoughts, and just do what you can. God made you and made him, and I'm sure you'll work things out. It sounds like you are doing an awesome job so far!

Yes - don't worry about how much you can pump. You just pump what you can and that will be good enough! I think for someone here (maybe Sarah?) it took 9 days for her milk to come in. So don't get discouraged if it doesn't pick up for awhile. You are doing great!!!

yup...that was me...with my first it took 9 days for it to come in, and that was with a hospital grade pump twice a day and a baby sucking every minute he was awake basically. Sometimes it just takes a while to come in.

My milk took it's time coming in as well. Mary was born Tuesday night and my milk didn't come in until Sunday morning. The LC I saw said that it is common for your milk to take a while to come in if you had a traumatic birth or a c-section.

This was the reason we had so many difficulties with nursing, by the time my milk finally came in Mary was so frustrated with nursing and not getting any food she didn't want anything to do with me.

Praying for you Erin!!!!

hmmm I didn't mean mixing the formula with the bm in the same bottle.. I meant as in supplementing at times.. switiching back and forth between them.....

as long as it is done on a regular schedule (as in which feeding...say..Breastmilk morning feeding, formula for the next two feedings, breastmilk for dinner and before bed, etc)...it won't hurt your milk supply. But it needs to be done on a regular schedule as your breasts will produce milk on one....and if you just randomly alternate it...they won't be able to keep up (or worse...you'll end up engorged!).

My sil had to use formula when she went back to work...she just nursed the baby in the mornings before work and then at night after she got home and then all day on her days off. It worked just fine...but she never use formula for a regular breastmilk meal.

I know that there is another mom on here who for sanity's sake gives her baby formula at night...but since she does it on a regular schedule (always that last feed before bed and the one in the middle of the night)....it has not affected her milk supply.

Hope that helps

Erin - two things;

1 - don't throw out ANY amount of pumped milk!! No amount is too small for you to save for Isaac. Talk to the nurses to see about 'compacting' milk. I would pump and then dump it into a container in the freezer - a whole evening/nights worth would go in one container and I'd take it in to the NICU in the morning. Not sure if they would advise that for you, so ask first!

2 - I used the pictures I had of Judah into a slide show (actually my monitors screen saver, so adding new pics was simple!) and played baby lullabies in the background while I pumped.
Do you have a hospital grade pump? If no you may want to look into renting one. To me it is well worth the rental price (I think it was $1/day.)

Erin pumped 1/2 oz last night and a full oz this morning....she said she was even leaking!!! She was shocked....she got out the pump bag, and immediately started leaking...lol. So her breasts are kicking in very well!!! She has herself on a pumping schedule that will work good with her work schedule when she goes back (which may be in the next few days, working every other day, since they really can't do much with Isaac yet...she wants to save as much time off as she can for when she can hold him or when he is home)

Thanks for the update Sarah.

(((Erin)))

Since pumping was so hard for me, it always seems like such a supreme act of love when a mother goes through the work of pumping for their baby.

Your son is so blessed to have you as a mommy!
