I grew up in Indiana but have lived all over the place.
If you see post number 6 you will notice that I grew up in Michigian. Did not leave there untill after the birth of my second son.

In upstate SC you are less than an hour from 3 large lakes and the mountains. You are only a few hours from the beach. We have some mosquitos but not as many as you have in the 'lowlands' of SC.
