So nit-picking McCain's words are justifiable, but nit-picking Obama's words are not"

Based on what?

I already answered this to you in the other thread.

Now, Leon_Figg3: do you think it's unimportant that McCain makes so many gaffes about Iraq despite his insistence he's a foreign policy expert? Do you think politicians' statements should not come under the public light?

McCain should know better, but so should Obama fans. Whatever dumb thing McCain says, Obama can usually top it. And that's the case here.

It turns out that Obama didn't even know much about the geography of his own state. In an attempt to explain his weak polling in Kentucky, Obama said, “Sen. Clinton, I think, is much better known, coming from a nearby state of Arkansas. So it’s not surprising that she would have an advantage in some of those states in the middle.” Apparently he wasn't aware that Illinois, his state, shares a border with Kentucky. Arkansas, her state, does not.

Where am I?

Doesn't Obama live in Illinois?

Unfortunately LJMac, I'm not an Obama fan. But I'm certainly not a McCain fan either.

You haven't answered my question, but for the sake of simplicity I will refer to the other thread to read your answer if and when you can pull yourself away from being critical of Bush and McCain to answer the questions.

Exposing incorrect statements is not necessarily being critical. It's due diligence, and on that note, both Bush and McCain have made quite a number of gaffes. I find that troubling; if you don't, I don't know what to say.

Good night for real now.

Rich: there is a difference between a misstatement and ignorance. McCain has visited many of those countries, so I doubt he is ignorant on the simple geography of the area. More likely that he simply misspoke.

You are speculating, Jfwink.

McCain, on the interview with CBS, made it very clear that it's history. He spoke authoritatively; look at his comments about Obama:

"I don’t know how you respond to something that is such a false depiction of what actually happened."

"I mean, that’s just a matter of history."

If anyone is going to refer to another person's comments as a "false depiction of what actually happened" and then you cap off with "that's just a matter of history," this person better be utterly certain his/her statements are factually correct. McCain got his timeline reversed.

As for visiting those countries, it is an flawed argument on your part; you assume that by visiting a country, one will become familiar with the geography of that country. Does McCain know each of the provinces of Iraq by name just because he visited Baghdad?

Finally, you talk about this being something about geography; it is not. Rather, it is an issue on the struggle against foreign jihadists taken by Iraqis and its chronological antecedence to the US troop surge.

Rich: Of course I'm speculating that McCain Misspoke, just as you are speculating that he's ignorant concerning the statement.

What isn't speculation is that there is a difference between being ignorant and making a misstatement.

Also, if you've done much in the way of public speaking, you'll understand that making misstatements, like those that McCain and Obama have made recently, will unfortunately happen from time to time.

1. Then if you are speculating, you have no proof.
2. I am not speculating - the statements he's made portray somebody with little or almost no knowledge of Iraq and the Middle East.
3. ME doing public speaking or ME making misstatements is irrelevant. This is about John McCain, the GOP candidate who has insisted that foreign policy is his forte. The more he speaks the weaker that assertion of his appears to be.
4. Again: you said, "McCain has visited many of those countries, so I doubt he is ignorant on the simple geography of the area." Your error is that because one visits the Middle East one will know about geography - which is utterly false. Americans who visit Japan - say, Tokyo - are not going to turn into experts on Japanese geography. Or does a 1-week stay in Tokyo make one an expert on the northwestern prefecture of Yamagata? I hope you see my point.

Here's more speculation: McCain meant Afghanistan, not Iraq. It was a misstatement.

Unfortunately for everyone, misstatements like McCains, and like this one from Obama do happen.

"Let me be absolutely clear," Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, said today at a press conference in Amman, Jordan. "Israel is a strong friend of Israel's. It will be a strong friend of Israel's under a McCain...administration. It will be a strong friend of Israel's under an Obama administration.

Obviously, Obama meant to say America, not Israel. It was a misstatement. Obviously McCain meant to say Afghanistan, not Iraq. Misstatement. Not ignorance on either's part, probably just a lack of sleep for both. Oh wait, I'm speculating again.

Well if you want to get technical Rich, we are talking about countries: Iraq, Pakistan, Afghanistan. Your example speaks to cities within a country: Tokyo, Japan. Cities within a country are smaller scale, less well known. Someone who visits Japan may not become an expert on the cities, but will likely remember that China is west and Russia is north.

We're going in circles a bit here, so I'll sincerely bid you good day from here.
