That is the most accurate statement I have read on this thread. Folks, if Southern Gospel dies it is our fault. If individuals stop supporting something it will go away. I don't care if it is music, sporting events, or the local barber on main street. You stop supporting any business, it will close up shop.

If Southern Gospel is still around in 20 years, will their be any groups left like the Inspirations or the Kingsmen (from the 80s)? Will we still have the excitement of hearing a group with a live band? There aren't many left. If there is no live band, I much more prefer to hear a group like the Inspirations or Cathedrals using just a piano than soundtracks. Will there be any groups left that can sound that good with only a piano and bass guitar? Or will they all need loud soundtracks and stacked vocals?

Maybe, maybe not. Only time will tell. But one thing everyone doesn't realize is not only will groups change (I don't particulary mean style) but the audience in 20 years will also be different. We are looking at everything through our 2008 glasses and basing what Southern Gospel will be in 2028 on our 2008 mindset.

Groups like the Chuck Wagon Gang, Dixie Echoes, Blackwood Brothers, and Inspirations, the four that come to mind that (to my knowledge) use no soundtracks, seem to be doing quite well right now.

All you need to do is to take a look at the groups today. Will they be around 20 years from now? Tribute Quartet, Imperials, HisSong this is only three of the younger groups singing today. Yes, they will be here 20 years from now. Look at the younger people in Southern Gospel Music today that enjoy it. Saw Hope Bowling with her parents last night what a voice that young lady has. Brittney Galloway, All of the Crabbs, Tara Jackson, Driven Quartet. The younger generation will be seeing these groups 20 years from now. No, some of us won't be around 20 years from now to see them as we will give up our white hair for a place in Heaven, but there will be white hair still here.
There is only one reason there won't be Southern Gospel Music 20 years from now.
JESUS HAS RETURNED!

The hardest thing about the whole deal is that we fans CAN'T support the groups like we could in the past. 4 or 5 years ago, I would see alot more concerts than I do now. Everything is so expensive, we have to meet our obligations before entertainment. I can afford to spend 15 bucks on ebay buying a SG video before I can afford the trip. I was planning to attend the Mull's Gold City concert in pigeon forge, but its 37 bucks for tickets (18.50 a piece for my wife and I), plus thats about 70 miles from home which equates to around 25 bucks in gas. Thats 60 bucks if we dont buy any merchandise or eat while we're out.
Now, I did luck out with Brian Free coming to a church 10 miles from my house, doing a concert that I was able to go to.
I recommend everyone who wants to find good deals on SG music and videos to visit ebay and your local used bookstores. That is how I get 70 percent of my music in these tough economic times.

At my church we still take the kids to SG concerts as the opportunity presents itself. Most of the young people in our church like both SG and CCM, like most folks who are not in church like all forms of secular music. So to answer you question no I do not think it will die. I agree with an earlier post also, it will be here as long as God wants it.

At this point we have not cut back on concert going although I know it is a possibility in the future. We have cut back on other things - we eat out less, I've become fanatical about sticking to the budget, I've found great bargains at Goodwill or other thrift stores rather than shopping new, I check the sales papers before grocery shopping and ALWAYS use coupons where in the past it was sometimes.
We've found ways to continue to support what is a priority in our lives, our church and SGM just as before. I don't know what tomorrow holds on that front but for now we are making the adjustments necessary to continue to help keep this music alive.

Yes, southern gospel music will certainly still be here in 20 years. The problem is, it won't be southern gospel as we know it. Southern gospel will be a form of country, bluegrass, praise & worship, and maybe contemporary. It will not be four men and a piano, in fact there won't be any pianos. Human talent will be largely replaced with stacks, tracks and video. In the post-Gaither years, most fans will not know who Jake Hess, James Blackwood or JD Sumner were and will likely not care. The clean shaven men in matching suits will be a thing of the past. The industry has allowed, and even encouaged, the chipping away at a truly unique American art form. When the baby boomers begin to make their exit is when the real transformation will take place. I know most would not agree with me, but I believe the "progressive" changes in southern gospel music are actually going to be the demise of the it.

I think if we the people will back our singers i know that people like myself sometimes fuss about the charge for a singing but i will never fuss again. if you fuss about the charge try putting on a singing. first i know the groups have to charge because of their expenses and groups have a lot of expenses on the road ( fuel,eats,clothes) and then if they are fulltime they have their home expenses on top of their road expenses. and then the singing promoter. and i did'nt realize the cost of hosting a singing. exspenses for the singers, rent on the building, ads on radios,news papers and some stores will not let you put poster in their windows if you are charging for the singing it was so sad when i had these words spoke to me. so i'll be helping gospel groups more in the future. i'm hosting a singing in Bowdon Ga. at copeland hall with Mike and Kelly Bowling August 9, at 7:00 tickets are $10.00 in adv. $12.00 at the door children 4 years & under free. so i'm praying that this singing go's good because i would love to get into the gospel music promoting.
so if any of you gospel music folks are in the Carrollton and Bowdon Ga. area on this night come on out and have a great time with us.
