Mrs. Tracy,

You sound like such a NICE neighbor! Please come and live next to ME!!!! I'm glad you have politely stood your ground. It sounds like your neighbor lady is starting to get what your boundaries are, and that's a good thing!

I'm so impressed with all you have done OUTSIDE your house since moving in just one month ago. You should be really proud of yourself for that.

There is a woman on the forums, Bethany, who she and her husband bought a corner lot and did AMAZING things to clean it and clear it. So beautiful what they have done with it and you're right, it makes a difference to more than one block. I'll have to send her over to this thread so she can encourage you because what she and her husband did makes a big difference to their block and I'm quite sure their neighbors were also very impressed!

Hopefully the trimmed trees (which is no small expense for you) will show your neighbor that:

A) You care about your property and,
B) You have your own plans on what you will and won't be doing with your yard.

Good for you!

Jeanie

Thank you!!!! We knew the trimming needed to be done when we bought the house becaues EVERYTHING in the yard was overgrown. But when we got the price we got (475) for 6 very unruly trees, we jumped. It was in the budget for next year but I had 1000 budgeted for the trees.

Oh, I can so relate to this!! When we bought our house, the fence was completely rotted and was barely held in place with ropes lashed to trees in the backyard. It was terrible. We had the fence replaced a few months after moving in and many neighbors have made a point to thank us. Our neighborhood is cute and well-maintained, so the collapsing fence was a huge eyesore for the whole area. We also had sod put in the backyard and a bunch of diseased bushes hauled off.

We are on a corner lot. Thankfully, the one neighbor couple with whom we share a property line is very nice and pleasant.

Backyard Before - YES, there is an ugly tire around the tree!

Backyard After

Oh I wish I would have taken before and after pics. But I can take some now and will. Our deck was in very poor condition and so far I have pressure washed and sanded it. We are going to fix the backing of it and then stain and seal it. I have also ripped out all of the weeds in the front and on the side but it still looks horrible. So I am going to take pics and hopefully by the end of summer, I can post before and after. I LOVE what you did to your back yard. Hopefully mine will turn out just as great. But we are being realistic and know that it may take a year or two for things to come full circle.

Today I talked with the neighbors SIL and he confirmed to me that the reason they wanted the tree down was because of the mess it makes in the spring. I told him that we were going to trim and hopefully there would be less of a mess and that if the tree doesn't do well, we will take it down when we need to. It is big and old and may one day need to come down, but until it is unsafe or sick, it stays. I am going outside to take pics now.

Thanks!

I'm so glad you took some pictures. It will be so encouraging to look back and see the progress you've made! I just made a photo album of our progress on the house (both inside and out) since we bought it so that I can take it to show my grandparents when we visit them next month. It was gratifying to see how much improved our lot looks now. It made me feel good about the money and effort we spent doing all of that. I get that same feeling when our neighbors make comments - I can't wait until that happens for you, too.

I can't wait either because while we just moved in and then took a two week vacation a week after closing, it feels like it is going to be endless. But I also realise that we have done a whole lot and by the end of next week, a whole lot more will be done. We will be able to scratch the deck and trees off of our list. My basement has tile that needs to be pulled up and I am going to start that when the kids go back to school. Just a little bit every day because it is a large basement and very dusty. I have asthma. So after the trees are done, I will try to post those before and after pics. I can't wait!!!!!!!!

I've been following this thread with interest but didn't really have anything to say until now.

Bethany - WOW!!!! how long did all that work take ya'll to do? Did ya'll do it all on your own?

My neighbors trees are right on the property line. I don't say anything aobut them because we are on a hill w/ a creek in the back and it would take a bucket truck to get them down. Very expensive. Last week my neighbor told me he's having 3 of them taken down. That would be good for my gutters BUT it will bring more light to the back of my house & my bedroom when they are down. This is a double edged sword as it will cause the temprature to rise. Oh well.

During a recent afternoon, quick thunderstorm, a large branch from one of these trees fell over the fence into my yard. Thank goodness it didn't damage the fence. I didn't call him or make a scene. Since it was in the back yard, they couldn't see it. I brought it to my neighbor's attention one evening when we were all outside & he said he will cut it up for me. He has a chainsaw, I don't and it would take an hour or more to use a hand saw. I'll haul the cut up portion to the curb for the county to pickup, I just need help on cutting it up.

Tracy - I'm glad your neighbor seems to be coming around where this is concerned.

Thanks, I am glad she is coming around too. But it is hard when her kids are over because they literally attack me. Yesterday she said that we killed her roses with all the water that drained out into her garden (right on the property line) when we washed our deck with the pressure washer. We were careful not to push the water in her direction and I am sure that some got in there, but not enough to kill them.

But then my FIL was over and he told her that they weren't dead, but that what she was seeing was new stems on the plants and he told her what to do with them. He said that they can't be overwatered, especially since they made it throught the floods we had early in June. We are in a FEMA area and that specific neighbor got so much water that her basement had 6 inches. So it wasn't our water that did that, but they are growing very nicely.

She told my husband that I was a good choice in a wife and while she doesn't know me well enough to say something that bold, it was nice that she tried to make that compliment. I know that when baking time comes around with the holidays, I will make sure they get a plate of cookies. Maybe that will help her have nice thoughts in spring when the tree makes the mess she is always complaining about.

Ok, so we went to visit with my husband's son overnight and when we got home tonight, our trees were trimmed. I think they look nice but it was dark when we got home so I will have to have a look tomorrow. AND take pics because I do have before pics. YAY!!!!!

But my neigbor seems to have resolved herself to the fact that the tree is staying because she was even joking that she was going to tell them to take it down while I was gone. At least she said it like she was joking. Either way, my trees look taller. How weird is that?

Do you think you'll share your pictures? You know you've got us all curious about what it looks like, right?

I thought about you yesterday. Hubby noticed that one of the limbs on our Maple in the front yard is touching our roof...ACK! That has to be trimmed right away before it damages shingles or something.

I have to learn how to link the pictures in here. But I would love to share them.
How To Link to a Picture.....
*upload the picture you wish to link to into a photo sharing web site (I personally use photobucket (see, that's a link), but I know there are a few more too)
*in a separate window from the forums, pull up the picture you wish to share, highlight the URL (the things at the top that starts with "http://www.") and copy it (either by holding down the "CTRL" button and hitting the "C" or right clicking with the mouse on the highlighted URL and clicking on "COPY")
*back on your forums page...write out what you want to be your link word. Some people like to put "<--link" beside it so that others know it's a link word, but I don't find that necessary...the color of the word is different so it's pretty easy to see if it's a link.
*highlight that key word and hit the "LINK" button up above where you type...this will make a pop up box come up. If it doesn't come up because of a pop up blocker then hold down the "CTRL" button while clicking on the link button.
*the box will have three sections....the top should say "htpp://" in the pull down box...the second will need to be filled in with what you copied earlier...where your picture is locates. Just put the curser in there and paste your url in there (either by holding down the "CTRL" button and hitting the "V" key or by right clicking with the mouse and going down to "PASTE". The third place should have your highlighted key word in it.
*after putting in your URL hit the OK button and it will put the proper stuff into your post. It will look funny typed out, but it will be fine when you preview your post or post your post.

Just wanted to let you know that I think you make a wonderful neighbor and the kind Jesus would be proud to wear His name. Sounds like He knew what He was doing when He put you in this woman's neighborhood. Blessings fluttering your way (no helicopters) , LL
