Adorable lil one there ray!

I have been shooting some film with my Canon EOS Elan IIe and am finding that the shutter is not 100% about 1 in 10 times. Maybe dust? Dust is our enemy right? The shutter itself does not appear to have been touched. No "oils" or finger prints on it that I can see. It looks "clean" inside.

So I called my sister.

My Honey bought me a Canon EOS Rebel 2000 camera back in 2001, I went digital in 2002 and sold the Rebel 2000 to my sis in 2003. Well, she went digital last summer when she went on a cruise and did not want to lug around the 35mm. When I told her I had ordered the Elan IIe off Ebay she got upset and said that she had "my" rebel that she was not using and would have "given" it to me if I needed it.

She said she'd just send me the camera- I said I'd pay her 50.00 + actual shipping (better to PAY for it than to worry that something might happen to it and I'd have to replace it for her. I don't lend money- I give it and I don't borrow stuff... Strains relationships.) After I insisted upon paying her 50.00 + actual shipping for it she said that she would throw in the K-1000 outfit she found at a yard sale for next to nothing last spring as she was 100% digital and not shooting film at all anymore.

I think need a new microfiber lens cloth- or two.

Course this will mean that I have 1 dSLR, 2 computerized SLR's, and 1 100% manual-you-even-have-to-advance-the-film-and-rewind-the-film-yourself SLR camera.

That's 4 camera bodies.

I started out back in 1986 with the K-1000 should be fun to get to visit with it again.

It could be dust. The shutter is so easy to mess up that I'd hate to do anything with it myself. I'd leave that to a pro...and that may cost more than the camera's worth.

In the early 80's, my dad gave me an old Kodak. He bought it in Korea when he was over there about 1953. It had a fixed 50mm lens...all manual of course...not even a light-meter.

I used it for several years. The shutter broke so I took it to a dealer. He couldn't find parts for it, so I just gave him the camera for parts.

Pros/cons from the Nikon D40 or D40x? I'm comparing and want to see if the 40x is worth the extra money. Over the holidays I had found a deal on the D40x but didn't know if it was worth the extra $$$. I'm saving my pennies and want to make a good choice.

thanks everyone!

The D40 is an excellent camera. The difference between the D40 and the D40X is the number of meagpixels. The D40 is 6.1, the D40X is 10. Otherwise they're the same camera. I used a D40 briefly a couple of nights ago and was surprised at how light it is. It weighs nothing compared to my N80. You should be able to pick up the D40X with an 18-55mm f4.0-5.6 lens for around $700-$800. A D40 with the same lens goes for around $549. If you're only going to do prints up to 11 X 14 the D40 should be fine. If you plan on bigger prints than that you would be better off with the D40X.

I have a 10mp canon XTi and I have done twenty-something by thirty-something sized prints. (shoot in raw make sure resolution is 350ppi)

I did this print as a promotional poster for the man that made my daughters dulcimer. I printed it at 24"x36" and you can READ the year on the class ring on her hand. The image itself was shot full program mode. I did not set any of the camera settings manually. however I will say I was shooing RAW which saves a much larger file than JPG

Thanks Bill. I think the D40 will work fine for what I need. (unless there is a steal on the D40x!!!)

Great pic, ezri! thanks for sharing!

Mrsdash,
Personal for the most part. I do plan on taking some good shots of some of our cars we build for brochures and for the web. I'll frame most if they are good for our shop. (we build hot rods) I used to do a lot of nature shots with my dd when she was younger. Most turned out very well even though I did struggle with lighting from time to time. Still lots to learn!

I don't imagine I do anything larger than an 11x14 unless I manage to really do something spectacular and want a poster. Personally,I don't see that happening any time soon.

If you're interested in learning more good/bad about the D40 from people who use it you might be interested in the Nikonians forum:

I have a minolta film camera with a 300 zoom add on lense. Something they came out with just before everyone went digital. Paid about 600 dollars for it. Anybody want to buy it so I can buy me a digital?

You can try selling to keh.com. Very reputable company but keep in mind that they buy wholesale so you won't get the same amount you'd get by selling on your own.

You didn't have it near any electric magnets did you? I killed a camera that way once.

Dumb, dumb, dumb......

So, if you're ever at a museum where they have cool electric magnet tables where you can play with nuts and washers and make them dance around by turning knobs to change the amount of magnetism.....don't set your camera down on the table or let it dangle from your wrist over said table. It's a death sentence.

A strong magnetic field will wreak havoc on any electronics. So keep your iPod and cell phones away, too.

What...did it just stop working?

It slowly stopped keeping charge of the batteries, even though they were fully charged; you could only take like 10 pictures on it, before it just shut off because of 'low battery'...we figure the little battery receptors in it were going, so we retired it, and I wound up getting my Rebel XT for my b-day. When my hubby got his new laptop, it came with a small hp digital, that is very similar to the cybershot, so I still have a smaller camera that I can take everywhere...I do a lot of horse back riding, so the XT is not very, umm...portable for that! Lol!

I love photographing my critters...here's a few of my very photogenic kitty, Faith...

It could be that the battery needed to be replaced. One thing that I've seen is that it doesn't like being stored with the battery in the camera. Doesn't take but a few weeks to kill the battery if you leave it in the camera.

We tried two sets of brand new batteries, as well as new chargers for the batteries...to no avail...but to be honest, I didn't mind retiring it, because I got a nicer camera...tehehe... I do still have the thing, so if I want to fix it later on, I can...its just not high on my financial priority list right now, with two working cameras in my stead!

Over the holidays one of my local camera shops had both on sale. I purchased the D40, and immediately regretted it. I went back and got the D40x. It was on sale, so it was only $100 more. I definitely wanted the camera to grow with me, and I looked forward to the possibility of shooting some images for large format...like trade show displays, etc. I did not want to spend all the money on camera, lenses, etc, and then later on find myself limited by size.

I am VERY happy I got the D40x.

Bas,

Let me know what kina results you get if you do print LARGE. I have the Canon XTi 10megapixel. the largest I have printed off thus far(Money is a factor) is a 24"x36" of my daughter with her dulcimer- found HERE* <-- link

Click the link- now look at her hand, see the class ring? on the 24x36" print I could clearly read the year on the class ring. It was awesome. DeviantArt print services are MUCH better than the Wal*Mart or Qoop or any other "normal" comsumer print producer I have used.

I want to print off huge too but money holds me back.

~ezri

*Price listed is their "customer" price, I think I paid just under 40.00 with S&H

You might also consider whcc.com for printing.
