rayofson, Thanks for that link. I think my monitor is too old or something - I can only see the highest numbers (using the black bar), no matter what adjustments I make. That's very helpful to know!

I had the same problem years ago when I first started scanning photo's. They were showing up really dark on the screen and I was having to adjust brightness compensation in order for them to look right.

Then I posted some of them. A friend of mine asked why all my pictures were washed out, and I didn't know what he was talking about until I viewed them on a different computer. Turned out my monitor was going south.

I strongly recommend a hardware calibrator such as Spyder from Colorvision or EyeOne from Gretagmacbeth over a web site color/gray bar display. While better than nothing, it's not far from it.

Wow! I never realized there was so much work to all of this. Can you all tell me if this is any better, color wise? I also took this one. Neither photo has been manipulated in any way - I'm wondering if these look better, if the other could have been just the filters I was using. ??

Paint Shop Pro when I manipulate - these were just resized using IrfanView. Other than that, they are straight from the camera. Perhaps the sharpening tool on IrfanView caused the overexposure? I may resize them tomorrow using PSP to see if there is a difference...

does psp have a levels adjustment? or try brightness and contrast. levels better. sharpening probably did not do it.

They look good to me....I took a similar shot last year in my neighbors yard.

txhoney,

here's a video on psp levels/curves. the picture is small so hard to see the difference in the photo they're working on, but will give you the idea. you might find some other tutorials there that help too.

Color-wise, it looks fine. The focus is good although I'd generally prefer a shallower depth of field. As someone else said, this exposed a bit too hot and that's not uncommon. There's a cheap and easy way to handle it, though. Get a sheet of inkjet paper (or even poster paper if you have it) and (optionally) glue some aluminum foil to it. You've just built a reflector. Then you can position the reflector to bounce back some light. This can help with images where you have hard shadows or big transitions from light to dark.

For your second image, try lowering your perspective. Instead of shooting from on top of the flowers, try shooting as if you were a bee coming in for a landing. Usually makes for an interesting look.

Beckey - beautiful iris photo! I love the raindrops on it... and aren't you from the Lone Star state?

Mrsdash - thanks! I played around with the photos on PSP for a bit; then I got busy doing yard work and forgot to upload them. I'll try to get that done tomorrow and come back to share the redo's with y'all.

Preserve - Thank you for the hint about the homemade reflector! I can't wait to try that. (Off topic alert lol Can I ask a quick question about your avatar? What kind of bird is that? It's so pretty! I have 11 bird feeders, 2 hummingbird feeders and 2 birdbaths up and running right now. We are visiting a bird sanctuary on our vacation next month, so I'm teaching my daughter how to identify our backyard birds before we go. So far, we've identified over 20 types of birds in our yard. )

On that first one, definitely burn those highlights a bit. There is a lot of brightness in the flower.

Ben, what do you mean "burn"? I'm new to all of this - would you mind explaining? And thanks in advance for your help.

Oh, I didn't see at first that you were using Paint Shop Pro. I don't know that it has the "burn" tools that Photoshop CS has.

Ben, I think I have Photoshop on my other computer... I'm just way more comfy using PSP. I'll have to explore it tomorrow, because I'm not familiar with a "burn" tool at all - although I usually use PSP to make graphics and desktop wallpaper.

PS has "burn" and "dodge" tools that help to bring out and hide highlights, midtones, and shadows really easily.

Ok, I'm getting in on the end of this thread (nope, am not gonna read 34 pages all in one go!)...

I'm just starting a digital photography course and have abode photoshop to play with .

Is there a CW group at flickr? I know some people post there and the course has an 'unofficial' group there so I just wondered...

not that I know of...but that would be cool if someone wants to start one. I would, but I'm short on time right at the moment.

good question. I post on Flickr but never looked to see if there was a group.

This is not on Flickr but my daughter just shared this with me. She is one of the performers. She is wearing the small golden cap near right side of the photo.

Ahhh... about 2.5 hours from me then. San Antonio (and the drive there) is so pretty this time of year! (We either go through Fredricksburg or Lampasas...)

I've never posted at Flickr... I always use Photobucket.

Neat! I have a brother that lives in Marble Falls, one sister near Lufkin, another sister in Victoria, and one in Schertz. We're all over the place. But we haven't gotten to visit much since the high gas prices started.

My in-laws live in London... the majority of that side of the family is spread from Rochelle to Mason to London to Junction, with a stray around the Fredricksburg area. Our visiting has been vastly curtailed by the gas prices - just as yours is. We are heading to Glen Rose the second weekend in May for our first family vacation - I had to refigure expenses to add about $100 more for gas expenses - and I only started planning it in February. All I can say is thank goodness for cell phone plans with unlimited minutes and no long distance.
