We got rain! we got some lightening too- enough to make the power flash off 3 times at the fellowship building where we were having dinner and our monthly business meeting. Even had a bit of hail. Small, but you could hear it rattling on the windows.

Nothing worth snapping though.

I finished the re-touch on the senior shots of Miss D and got the proofs in-

I delivered the proofs last night.

note- this is not a "job" in the same way as one might set up an appt for viewing and all- it is more of a gift.

I ordered the 5x7 proofs from White House Custom Colour They are 40 cent each(12.00 minimum order) and are better quality than you might get from Walmart. NICE proofs. They come in an envelope and I did not want to present the family with a tatty paper envelope of photos. But what to do? Walmart doesn't carry "Brag Books" that hold 5x7 images. [&o] BUT they did have 3 hole punched scrap book inserts that hold two 5x7 prints each. Oooo that means they are 12x12! [&:] Thankfully there was a 1/2" 3 ring binder that held the 12x12 pages neatly without them hanging out the end of the notebook. It also had a place on the front where I could insert a paper to customize it.

I have to find a better way to present the proofs. A stack of photos doesn't scream lovely if you know what I mean...

A tatty paper envelope is def. not gonna happen. Help? How to present these images in a good first impression kinda way??? The Kitschy family portrait center slide the photos into frames with fake backs in walmart is BLAH. Just as the Boutique studio comfy viewing room with a high tech slide show presentation then the proofs on a high gloss black table is not happening.

Keeping in mind that where ever I am is my "office", I need a nice, good impression presentation. If this is gonna fly anywhere- that is going to remain my office for a while because my clients are busy home schoolers on the fly that are not easily convinced that they can find time to stop and breathe for a few minutes.

This presentation the three ring binder was decent in that it was a senior session and she(the subject) can 100% relate to the binder- AND all of the shots were "portrait" so there wasn't any awkward turning the book to see the photo in the proper orientation.

Next issue is deciding on a price sheet and a sitting fee. I did not need the sitting fee for this session as it was a graduation gift and being done only charging my cost for the images.

Any help out there?

whcc might have proof albums, mpix does. some photogs present in very nice custom envelopes with their logo and beautiful ribbon. for boys it would have to be handsome ribbon.[:D]

They will bind the 5x7's together with a plastic comb to include a clear cover and black card stock back. all that for an additional 5.00. That'd be a minimum of 17.00 for the proof book.

The thrifty proofing has a 12.00 minimum. 12.00 gets you 30 images, or less if you so choose- you still pay 12.00. The last order the session resulted in 20 lovely images but me being cheap I wanted to get those last 10 images- I was paying 12.00 for the 20 just as well as the 30, so I added another 10 images of my family and friends so I could not choose the binding this time. That and I wanted them to be able to USE the 5x7's in frames if they wanted to. if I'd had these bound then the punching of the holes and binding would throw off the 5x7 crop and after cutting them free of the comb binding they'd likely have to mat them down to a 4x6.

The actual proof books that have the file name beneath them can only be done using FTP and I have no idea how to do that. I am currently using ROES to submit my orders.

I've asked to join the Flickr group[:D]. I love photography, and have started to goof around with the post processing program "The Gimp" (a kind of photoshop clone). Jeremy, my boyfriend, has an XTi which I like to steal and think of as mine.

I have a Sony Lumix something-or-another that my brother gave me when he bought a "good" camera. It beat my old HP point and shoot, so I now use it frequently.

I would be in ... I ordered my XSi Tuesday morning from Newegg, which always reliably delivers in three business days. Was counting on it getting here Friday (today) so I could play with it all weekend. Unfortunately, I forgot that UPS takes Friday off so it gets here Monday. Waaaah!

David _ D! I love the sense of humor in your red,white and blue photos! Thanks for sharing. I like a technically good photo but even more I enjoy a photo that has a bit of a story to it.

And welcome Whisper. I have used GIMP. It is a good program that you can get for free. But since it was originally for apple computers, I couldn't get all the applications to work. Still, it did most of what I needed.

GIMP was originally for Unix/Linux, not Mac. I've been using it since 1998 or so.

Thanks! [:)] I took my cameras yesterday and ended up with another to add to that little series courtesy of one of my sisters. Red, white, and Dad.

I really dig that Uncle Sam sign photo of yours. I'm kind of a nut for vivid colors.

We visited Winterthur, a Dupont Estate in Delaware this weekend and I took the opportunity to take some pictures of the frogs in the lily pond. Frogs are very cooperative subjects since they just sit there, for the most part, until they are truly startled.

Thanks! I'm glad you liked them.

I REALLY enjoyed photographing them and I'm very pleased with the LiveView feature on the Canon XSi that permitted me to get better focus than I might have otherwise.

REALLY kicking myself for not having my camera along today at my softball game!!

There were very low lying clouds, light clouds, near-black sky, blue sky, sunshine, rain, huge hail, lightning, sun beams and 2 rainbows all going on at the same time! It was incredible.

Yup, a lesson we all have had to learn. That is one reason I didn't buy a huge slr (that and cost). I used to lug my film slr around and sometimes it was a burden. My midsize works well. Can't exactly drop it into a pocket, though.

Cropping is my buddy, too. I have a tendency to try to get too much into a photo or to shoot wide if the subject is moving around. Not only do we need to keep the rule of thirds in mind but also, what is the subject? Does the information around the subject add or subtract from the real reason for the pic?

I finished up the photo assignment (DeRosset senior shots) and have placed their order(were waiting for a payday). You will recall I am doing this one for a friend and getting a release to use her image for promotional purposes in the stead of a sitting fee and charging them my cost for the photos.

She understood that the cost of the images did not cover the work I did on them after having taken them. They know the amount of work I did. I got hugged twice for my dynamic skin softening[;)], and wow'd a couple of times too(better than a sitting fee for this soul folks).

The mom asked about the printer and I told her that WHCC does prints for some of the countries top professional "boutique" type photographers. she was astounded at the prices being so low. I pointed her back to the work done of each image that was shown and she did one of those V-8 things. DUH! the sitting fee covers the time and in the case of a studio the cost of the building and the lighting equipment used. the price of the image had to cover the cost of the time spent working each image as well as the cost of the printing.

It was neat to see the light come on and to still have her floored when I told her how much her 10 5x7's 30 4x6's an 8x10 and a sheet of wallets cost. (just a smidge over 20.00 my cost) she gave me that 20 + 20 for the 5x7 proofs, and 20 for my time which I gave back and told her to be sure to let folks know who took the photos. [:D] making her entire summer made my entire year[:D]

Did I under sell myself? By the worlds standards- most likely... Do I care? NO! would I charge more to someone else? probably. How much? I dunno- but I really do need to sit down and make up a price sheet huh?

Got the XSi!

I think I got one of the models that has some focusing issues. I saw lots of comments about that on dpreview forums. I can't seem to get much to focus correctly, sometimes closer shots are OK but longer ones almost always are blurry.

However I think I have confirmed that it is only the kit lens, not the camera itself. The 100mm macro lens I also got is quite amazing. I took a picture of a little flower and it fills my entire 28" monitor, most of it in good clarity. [:D] It also focuses longer distance fairly well. So that was probably a good buy.

Tonight I'll hopefully try my kit lens on my boss' Rebel XT and his lens on mine, to provide more confirmation that the problem is only the lens.

It's also possible that I'm doing something wrong, but I doubt it.

Oh, another question about the macro lens. For using it on a tripod, how important do you think it is to have the separately sold thingy to attach the lens to the tripod? It is a heavy lens -- probably twice the weight of the camera itself. I used it a little on the tripod today and it seemed OK, but I'd hate to have it rip something and fall off!
