I am a woman interviewing for an executive director position. I would assume a suit but it is like 95 degrees. What options do I have? What is appropriate? What kind of accessories could I wear with a black suit? Don't want to look like I am going to a funeral and I want to be stylish. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

Since you are interviewing for an executive position you will need to wear a suit. They do have summer suits at stores like Ann Taylor and I would wear a short sleeved blouse. Hang the jacket in your car, run the air and put it on right before you go into the interview. The office will be air conditioned so you only need to wear the jacket while in the building.

yes that will be food option for you. if there is 95 degrees that it will be too silly to wear a suit. wearing a summer jacket before entering the building is a good suggestion....

What makes you look stylish is the cut of the suit, color of blouse. Depending on the company, you can usually get away with a stylish blouse rather than a tailored shirt.

I agree- definitely need a suit jacket, but if you can buy a new one, go with something light & cool. It needn't be black, but should be a neutral color. I often wear a shell/camisole top in summer with suits.

A simple scarf can be a nice touch.

And, hey, Congratualtions!!

What is the employer's dress code? If you don't know, consider driving by at quitting time and seeing what people are wearing. You need to be dressed like the professional employees leaving, if not a notch above, since you're interviewing for exec director position.

The temperature really is irrelevant. If the other directors wear suits, then you wear a suit. Gauge how conservative of a suit it needs to be from what others are wearing.

At my employer, we have a business casual dress code, but many of the directors wear suits just about every day. I often wear a jacket, even though few at my level of employment ever do, because I buy into that "dress for the job you want" concept. On Friday, it was over 100 degrees, yet I wore slacks and a suit jacket on casual Friday because I had to briefly speak at our board meeting. It involved walking between my office and another building a couple times, so yes, it was hot. But I can't imagine not wearing a jacket - I would have been under dressed.

Maybe a nice white shirt and a black shirt.
You can probably get that at Wal-mart, since it's cheaper than most stores.

Thanks

I would dress to match your interviewer, with the caveat that you should dress in a way that makes you and the interviewer feel comfortable.

When I was originally doing my first on-site interviews, I was a frightened 20 year old college student who had never been to New York before. I was told by my Dad that most of the people at the interview would be wearing dark suits, but the morning I was scheduled to catch the flight, I decided that I would feel more comfortable in light gray instead.

After I was extended an offer at one place, they informed me that I was known as the nice kid from Illinois who was wearing the odd gray suit.

So dress to match the interviewer, but within that, just wear what makes you feel comfortable. You don't have to match the other interviewees to a T- that would be boring.

I am going to be ever so slightly pretentious here and just remind folks that it's important to dress for the job. Wal-Mart would be a great place to shop in many circumstances, but not all. One of the problems with Wal-Mart is that they use a lot of (clingy) polyester. I've never seen them selling a 100% wool Men's suit, and polyester suits don't always work well in interviews.

However, if you are applying for a female executive position, you may want to consider something a little nicer. For a $80K-$110K/year job, a typical guy would spend about $300 on the suit, shirt, and tie (add an extra $100 for the shoes/belt). He might shop at Macy's, Lord and Taylor, or Bergner's/Carson Pirie Scott/The Boston Store and wear something made by a designer like Tasso-Elba, Calvin Klein, Claiborne, or Ralph Lauren. As one other poster suggested, Ann Taylor would probably be a good equivalent for women. Most of the sales associates at these department stores can give you an excellent idea of what you should be wearing, but don't let them pressure you into spending more than you need to.

If you are going for a higher paying job, you may want to wear something nicer. The people two or three levels above me probably are wearing as much as $2K worth of clothing when they walk in.

More important than what designer you wear, however, is just a polished appearance. Shine your shoes, make sure your hair is combed (and maybe use conditioner), and that your clothes are cleanly pressed (and not polyester). Keep your hand in your pocket (to keep it warm) before you shake hands with your interviewers, and just try to relax.

Just make sure you're matching the building's dress code when you walk in. Guys will take their suit jackets off and carry them when it's really hot out, but everyone I know enters the building wearing their jacket.

I do agree that you would near a wal-mart suit to an interview for an executive position.

If the interview already took place, then I hope it went well.

I know. But it was just an example. It's much cheaper there. I don't shop there, but some people do only because it's cheap.

I shop at WalMart and buy a lot of stuff- including clothes there. They have some nice stuff (it tends to not last long), and for a lot of interviews it would be fine.

But for executive positions, a higher quality is required. I have bought all of my suits from Macy's & Boscov's. I get them when they are clearanced and have paid less for items on sale there than I have for full price stuff at WalMart.

Another option if money is tight is Goodwill and other second hand shops. You often have to look work harder to find something, but every once in a while you hit a treasure.

I just went shoe shopping for my reunion... went to several stores and couldn't find anything I wanted. Went to the Goodwill and got a pair of dress shoes almost exactly like I wanted, plus a pair of woven leather clogs for work that I have been looking for but couldn't find anywhere & a crocheted tank top for 1/3 of what I would have spent on 1 pair of brand new shoes (had I found anything I liked!). All three items looked like they had never been worn!

I have had more trouble finding suits second-hand personally, because I am not one of the common sizes... but if you are 8-12, they usually have a lot of nice suits in good shape (Obviously the quality of the stock varies from store to store!).

So... Imforlife! Did you go to the interview yet? How did it go?!? What did you wear?

Congrats!

Of course, one of the things with job interviews is that it's a two-way street. Did your feelings about the job change afterwards? That's something that a lot of people consider before they accept.
