Ok.
I have a WBR-2310 (its a Dlink 108G wireless router).
The wireless signal barely reaches the both ends of the house. I would like to add on a wireless access point - like a DLW-7100AP. I've never done this before. Any suggestions? It seems to be I should be able to run my cable - Cat 6 most likely - about 50 to75 feet and put up the WAP thus going allowing me wireless in the parts of the house the walls block the signal from - am I correct?
Thanks
Andy

You probably have a huge house, or lots and lots of metals between the walls. I can detect my neighbors and they don't have fancy routers.

Not sure if you already bought it, but why not get a wireless N? They have much longer ranges than G, and it is more powerful and faster. Also, instead of DLink, why not a Belkin? It's a lot cheaper. They also have N1 (supposedly better than N) for the same price as the G from DLink. If you get this, then you need one somewhere in the middle of the house, and voila, you're golden. Even your neighbors 5 houses down the road will be happier, that is if you don't have any security.

But if you already bought the DWL7100AP, then there is not much choice.

Are you replacing the WBR-2310 or extending it? I don't have any experience with extending it, but I will not be surprised if performance is degraded. This is because you're not connecting directly to the router. The more middle access points you have before it reaches the router, the lower the performance.

Does N really have that much better of a range? Also, all my devices have built-in G's with no N. I would have to purchase 3 N wireless adapters.

Wireless G maximum download speed is rated at 54 Mbps and a radius of about 75 ft.

The N draft is based on technology called MIMO (multi in and multi out). This is why you see multiple antennas. The speed rate is about 248 Mbps. I don't recall the distance, but is definitely much greater than G

Then there is the N1 draft with about 300 Mbps and longer range than N.

I don't know if it is still in draft, so it is better to stick with the same vendor to ensure compatibility.

For a large house, you only need one, even with a wireless G. Not sure I understand why you need more.

I would need a wireless N card in each laptop.

So far I have managed to set up my second router as an access point and it works for the most part, but it seems to kick my son out his online game he plays (ToonTown) about every 5 minutes.

To take advantage of wireless N, you would need an N on each client, but that may be too expensive. But if you're planning on buying new ones anyway, try Belkin. Their N are much cheaper than G sold by other companies.

I am not familiar with ToonTown, but maybe you can set a schedule when someone can be online when they require lots of bandwidth, otherwise for simple browsing, all should be fine. Especially when you're up/downloading a huge file or playing a game that uses lots of bandwidth.

Another reason is location. Move your laptop around the room and check the meter to see the strength signal. You'll be surprised that by just moving it one foot it makes all the difference. It's not moving it a foot of course, but parts of the room having better reception. And then watch your son take claim of that precious space of the room.
