Then Moses answered, “But behold, they will not believe me or listen to my voice, for they will say, ‘The Lord did not appear to you.’” Exodus 4:1
Oh Moses. We understand, don't we? For our vantage point, years later with the entire Scripture in hand, we'd like to point out the obvious to Moses: God is talking to you from a burning bush! If now is not the time for faith and courage, when would it be?
But, even as those thoughts cross our minds, we likely nod in unison, remembering our own feeble ways. How often has God made Himself clear to us, and yet we've shrunk back into doubts? How often has He affirmed His direction, spoken through others to us and through His Word - only to find us clinging to fears and reminding Him of why it may not be the best idea, after all.
At least Moses admitted the fear that we all would rather sanitize with other excuses: what will people think?
But, maybe the issue isn't our fear of others not believing us, but of us not believing God.
Somehow, God's authority must trump the deep need in us to be affirmed by others. Focusing on proving ourselves only feeds the need. Real freedom comes in believing God is who He says He is and He will do what He says He will do.
True belief stands before God, dependent only on Him. Disbelief depends on how we stand before others.
Prayer
Lord, help us to trust you more fully. When you call us into your great purposes, in whatever seemingly big or small way, help us to respond in faith and with eyes on you alone. Train us to focus on you, Jesus, not on how those around us will perceive our obedience. Keep us in your will, desiring it above all else. In your name, Jesus, amen.
