The Words of Life:: Abiding in Christ {Day 11}

Originally published Monday, 19 January 2015.

When the ground you stand on crumbles, you need to back up until you find sure footing, until the ground beneath your feet is solid rock.

You need Words of Life to anchor you to what is certain, to bring you back from the swirling doubts and the “why-God” groanings.

You need a vantage point to frame reality, and this is mine:

God is our refuge and strength,
a very present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear
though the earth gives way,
though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea,
though its waters roar and foam,
though the mountains tremble at its swelling.
Selah
(‭Psalm‬ ‭46‬:‭1-3‬)

Those are the words I recited, loop after loop, when depression threatened to swallow me during my pregnancy.

Those are the words I clung to when my father walked out on us after ten years of pioneering missionary work.

Those are the words that ground me this weekend as my husband and I trade shifts to be with my father-in-law in the cardiac intensive unit.

What are your words of life?

Day 11 Challenge: Identify a passage of Scripture that is a lifeline to you, that reminds you who God is in your darkest moments. Memorize it.

Father, your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. In your light I see light, and through your word I learn to view my present circumstances from your perspective. Thank you for being my refuge and help. I can trust in you because you have this all figured out.

This is the 11th post in the series, “Abiding in Christ–when reading the Bible isn’t an option.” Check out all the posts here.
